Apocalyptic Beastworld: A Farming Space Dimension to Another World-Chapter 69: The Strange Village
They all stepped through the wooden houses, knocking with trembling hands at the nearest one, calling each of the house owners.
It was too quiet, and no beastman was in sight. Usually, even after finding out that the pollution level in their village was no longer suitable for living, they would still do activity normally.
After all, they still needed to fill their stomachs. At most, they would feel apprehensive for the first few days they found out about the high pollution level before they resumed their daily activities.
However, the place now looked like an abandoned town. It has been just less than a week since they last saw this place. What had happened? Ma Yongcheng wondered, his heart was heavy.
Fortunately, fortunately, Lu Qingtang and his kids had left.
Blood was splashed all over the ground, mixing with dirt. In some places, they were still wet while in other places, the blood had become dry. They could even vaguely see some smelly pieces mixed around, like some rotten flesh.
The place looked like it had been ransacked by powerful zombie beasts.
"Empty!" A beastman came out, his fist clenched in agitation. "There’s no one in this house, Village Head."
"Village Head, no one is in this house," another trembling voice reported.
In an instant, fear filled everyone’s hearts. What happened to their village? It was their home—their roots.
Village Head Peng’s face paled, but he still maintained calmness despite the huge turmoil in their hearts. He took a deep breath and pointed ahead. No one noticed his slight trembling finger.
"Let’s go there, let’s go. Maybe they are in the slaughterhouse." At this moment, he tried to be positive.
He turned to Ma Yongcheng. "You said there are some beastmen who turned into fallen beasts, right?"
Ma Yongcheng nodded grimly. "Don’t panic. These traces might be those fallen beasts who were trying to escape. A fight must have happened here."
Although they still harbored doubts in their heart, they didn’t voice it out. The place was just so quiet that it was eerie. They could even see vague, thin fog which loomed over their village.
It made the village more gloomy.
The village head led everyone to go deeper into the village, heading to the slaughterhouse. Some of them tried to convince themselves. "Maybe they just caught some fierce beast and are butchering it in the slaughterhouse."
Ma Yongcheng walked beside Lin Yu’an, whose eyebrows were furrowed deeply. Lin Yu’an was more perceptive, so Ma Yongcheng grabbed his hand, shaking it slightly and asked anxiously.
"Do you think my fellow villagers are alright?" He asked while glancing at Xie Ziyuan, who hadn’t said anything since earlier.
It wasn’t Lin Yu’an who answered him, but Xie Ziyuan. "You have to prepare yourself."
Ma Yongcheng’s heart sank. Even Xie Ziyuan said such a thing. The situation inside the village might not be good.
"These traces are from a zombie beast, right, Master Xie?" Lin Yu’an asked, staring at the blackened and rotting pieces of flesh. Some of them even still had maggots wriggling in them.
Seeing Xie Ziyuan nod, Lin Yu’an self-consciously went to burn these things. Ma Yongcheng immediately went to chase the village head and others, warning them not to step on these chunks of flesh or bloodstains.
As they walked deeper into the village, their steps grew heavier along with their hearts. There was already an answer they knew deep inside their hearts.
Their footsteps were loud. It should have attracted any living beastmen, yet no one came out to greet them. The fog became thicker the more they walked.
Some weaker beastmen had a hard time breathing.
"You all go back." Village Head Peng’s eyes swept over their flushed faces. They looked like a fish out of water, unable to breathe.
There were unwilling looks on their faces, however, they knew that they were indeed at their limit.
"Village Head..." Breathlessly, a young beastman struggled to convey his words. "My cousin might... be... there."
Some of them also struggled to speak, asking people they knew to watch out if they saw their relatives. With flushed faces, the weaker beastmen went back, feeling utterly powerless.
"We will only take a look. Don’t stay too long." Village Head’s words came out a little shaky, which he himself failed to notice.
Even from the outside, many buildings already looked ominous. There were many torn items everywhere, as if the place had undergone a great battle.
Xie Ziyuan walked slowly, his eyes analyzing the surroundings.
Leng Chuan had stayed behind, taking care of his injured siblings. Only Ma Yongcheng and Du Yifei followed as the beastmen who were a little bit familiar with him.
Even the usually talkative Du Yifei had gone very quiet. He suddenly shifted to his bird form, a small yet nimble light brown wren bird.
He circled the sky, his eyes very alert. All of a sudden, he took a sharp inhale of something and coughed. The small lapse had a detrimental impact on his current state.
The small bird plummeted to the ground like a meteor.
Ma Yongcheng’s face changed and he cursed as he ran. This chatty bird, how can he be so reckless!
"Yongcheng?" The village head called out doubtfully at the figure sweeping past. They could only see his back now.
Ma Yongcheng didn’t even turn back, running as fast as he could. Upon arriving in front of the slaughterhouse, he let out a gasp when he saw the sight before him.
However, he quickly recovered himself and searched for the figure of a small bird who was flipping madly, struggling to keep itself afloat in the air.
He grabbed the bird and hurriedly retreated, breathing heavily. Clearly, the place made him uncomfortable.
"Yongcheng, what happened?" They hurriedly asked. "What’s going on in that place?"
Ma Yongcheng’s face was very pale, as if he had seen a ghost. He shook his head, his expression urgent. He didn’t answer, running toward Xie Ziyuan.
He didn’t know why, but he believed Xie Ziyuan was the only one who could help Du Yufei. Luckily, he was not far away.
"Master Xie, c-can Du Yufei be saved?" He asked nervously.
Xie Ziyuan frowned and took the palm-sized bird from Ma Yongcheng’s hand. It was twitching madly as if it was poisoned. However, they were clear that it might be the early signs of a fallen beastman.
