Chapter 39: Chapter 39: Clues

The person was carrying a huge load slung around his shoulder. A young woman stood beside him apprehensively; her hand clutching a child who was hiding beside her mother.

"Zhang Lei?" Leng Chuan sprang forward, startling the family of three that they instinctively took a few steps back.

"Stay back." Zhang Lei reminded the otter beastman sternly. His face wasn’t kind. A frown marred his forehead when he saw pieces of flesh on the house.

Leng Chuan didn’t mind his attitude at all. He kept his distance as Zhang Lei took his time to scrutinize everyone who had come with him. "Do you know where my siblings have gone?"

The man scoffed when he heard his question. "How would I know? That’s your siblings, not mine."

Ma Yongcheng was more hot-blooded compared to Leng Chuan. When he heard the man’s sarcastic reply, he immediately jumped forward. "What’s the matter with you? He is just asking you a question."

The man’s face showed disgust at the stains on their clothes. He shook his head and dragged his wife and daughter a few steps back. "Who are you? Don’t meddle in someone else’s business."

"Brother Leng’s business is also my business." Ma Yongcheng was not willing to be outdone, glaring back at Zhang Lei.

Leng Chuan seemed a little stunned by Zhang Lei’s reaction, but he soon recovered. The latter already packed his things, and it was obvious he was going to leave.

Although he and Zhang Lei weren’t close, their relationship wasn’t hostile with each other. He tried to figure out what was wrong, trying to recall their interactions to see whether he had offended him somehow.

"It was you all who had killed this monster?" Zhang Lei snorted. "Luring a monster here. Are you trying to make us leave the village?"

Leng Chuan pursed his lips. "We didn’t lure the monster from outside the village. It’s Mr. Wang."

Zhang Lei’s mouth opened and closed again like a fish, and soon his face became twisted. The family of three was shocked by the news. Zhang Lei’s daughter clutched her mother’s dress tighter. "Mr. Wang?"

His tone was still doubtful, and he looked around the surroundings vigilantly. He spoke to his wife and daughter. "Even someone had turned into a zombie. Let’s go. We can’t stay here anymore."

He turned to Leng Chuan and warned. "Don’t follow us! We already get a guarantee to enter a city. The place can’t accommodate more than the three of us."

Leng Chuan had heard that Zhang Lei had some relatives who were living in the city. He showed such a hostile behavior most likely because he tried to stop people from following him.

"Wait." He still tried to stop them.

"I said don’t follow us!" Zhang Lei snapped. Then, he sneered. "Go find your siblings! They were running away to follow you after the village head announced our area’s contamination level."

Everyone was speechless as they stared at Zhang Lei and his family’s running figures. He really looked so scared they might entangle him.

Me Yongcheng shook his head and glanced at Xie Ziyuan’s impassive face. He didn’t forget to flatter the big boss at this moment. "What is there in the city anyway? We still have to fight for lodging and food. In the base, we already have a better place with Master Xie leading us."

He didn’t forget to add. "Of course, Miss Owner too, who had provided us with lodging."

Xie Ziyuan didn’t react much, as if he hadn’t heard anything at all.

Meanwhile, Leng Chuan was still stunned. Ma Yongcheng cleared his throat and consoled him even though he was also anxious.

Lin Yu’an, who already finished his job, immediately joined them. His face was a little pale, but his eyes were bright. However, Leng Chuan’s countenance was equally bloodless.

He didn’t think much about Zhang Lei’s behavior, but the information he gained from him made him even more worried sick. His siblings didn’t leave with the village head? If they were looking for him, their situation might be more dangerous.

"Where are they going?" He ran his hand through his hair in frustration. Eventually, he just sighed. No one could answer his questions.

"If you have each sample of your siblings’ belongings, bring them." Xie Ziyuan suddenly spoke.

Leng Chuan did as he was told without asking any question. He went inside his house again to fetch some items belonging to each one of his siblings.

He didn’t miss the anxiety in Ma Yongcheng’s eyes. He turned to Xie Ziyuan. "Master Xie, I think we should hurry to Brother Ma’s place. Maybe his family is still there."

Ma Yongcheng snapped his head toward him, surprised. Although he was worried about his family, he also sympathized with Leng Chuan. Hence, he didn’t urge them to hurry to find his family even if he wanted to.

"There are still some people in this place. We can warn them about the existence of the zombie while also asking about your siblings," he suggested.

Everyone agreed. Along the way, they knocked on some houses that still have people inside. The most noticeable thing was the smell of food around these houses and signs that some items outside had been used.

Ma Yongcheng’s nose was also incredibly sharp. They could easily find them. Moreover, Leng Chuan also had a surprising affinity with water, and could detect the vibration in the water for every unusual thing.

"Zhang Lei didn’t lie." Leng Chuan clenched his fists. His lips pulled into a thin line.

They already asked people who remained in the village. It was exactly as Zhang Lei had said. Some people opened their doors while others didn’t. For those who didn’t open the door, they didn’t insist.

Everyone was shocked when they received the information. They were instantly ready to pack their things and planning to move as soon as possible.

However, it was also not without gain. They found out that Leng Chuan’s younger siblings followed another group of people who were also looking for habitable land.

"Let’s go to Brother Ma’s village. Who knows we might meet my younger siblings there." Leng Chuan finally exhaled.

Xie Ziyuan’s spiritual energy had mostly recovered. He brought them to Ma Yongcheng’s village after a brief rest.

As soon as they arrived there, they were shocked by what greeted them.
