Chapter 194: Changing

Peter and the ten men and women behind him froze where they stood. None of them had fully recovered from the moment that roar sounded through the space.

Their bodies still reacted before their minds could catch up. Their shoulders stayed tense and their fingers remained locked around their weapons.

A few of them had unconsciously taken a step back earlier and even now they hadn’t moved forward again. It felt as if an invisible chill had seeped into their bones and refused to leave.

Their eyes stayed fixed on Red.

His face was still twisted into a snarl. Veins faintly visible along his neck as his breathing came out slow and heavy.

For a short moment, something far worse revealed itself. His eyes become completely black. Not dark or just shadowed, but utterly black, swallowing any trace of humanity within them.

It only lasted for a couple of seconds. Then it returned back to normal. The blackness faded, replaced by his normal eyes again as if nothing had happened.

But it was already too late.

They had seen it.

And that single moment was enough to leave something behind in their minds. A quiet, creeping realization that what stood before them might no longer be entirely human. Not even close.

"That wasn’t normal."

"That wasn’t just anger."

They thought about the same thing.

Red’s chest rose once more before slowly settling. The tension in his muscles eased little by little and the snarl on his face relaxed.

His expression smoothed out, returning to that cold, controlled calm he always carried.

As if nothing had happened.

Around him, the others exchanged brief glances. No one spoke openly, but their eyes said everything they felt, which was fear. Confusion, and uncertainty. Each of them silently questioned what they had just witnessed, yet none dared to be the first to say it out loud.

Red stepped forward.

His boots pressed against the platform as he walked directly to its center.

Without hesitation, he placed his hand over the activation point.

A faint red glow flickered again.

The same translucent interface appeared before his eyes.

[Dungeon Status: Closed]

[Reason: Reset in progress]

[Access Denied]

Red’s jaw tightened instantly.

A sharp sound escaped his teeth as he clenched them with irritation. His hand curled slightly against the platform before he pulled it back.

"Tch!"

He turned.

His gaze swept across his men. It was heavy and suffocating even without the earlier outburst.

"It seems like we can’t do anything about it," he said. "This dungeon is really sealed. Let’s go back."

Without waiting for a response, Red moved first.

He walked past them with heavy and deliberate steps as he headed straight toward the cave entrance.

The others parted instinctively, making space for him without being told. No one dared to slow him down or speak.

They followed.

But the moment enough distance formed between them and Red, the silence began to crack.

Low whispers spread through the group, quiet and cautious, barely above breath.

"Did you see that...?"

"That roar... that wasn’t human."

"I felt it wasn’t just sound. There was energy on it, man!"

"And his eyes... for a second I saw they were completely black." 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖

"...Yeah. I saw it too."

"It felt like... something else was there."

A woman near the back swallowed hard before speaking again, her voice trembling slightly.

"Do you think... he’s mutating?"

The word hung in the air.

No one answered immediately.

Because every single one of them had already thought the same thing.

Before the fear could spread further, a sharp voice cut through their whispers.

"Enough."

Peter’s tone carried clear anger as he turned toward them, his eyes narrowing.

"You shouldn’t talk like that about him." His gaze moved across their faces one by one, showing sharpness and disapproval. "That’s our leader."

The group fell silent again, but the worry didn’t disappear. It only sank deeper and hidden beneath forced restraint.

One of the men hesitated before speaking anyway, his voice lower than usual.

"Don’t you feel it too?"

Peter’s eyes shifted toward him.

"That wasn’t normal," the man continued. "Back there... didn’t you feel something strange about him?"

For a moment, Peter said nothing. His expression tightened slightly.

Of course he felt it.

He had stood right in front of Red. He had been the closest. He had been the first to flinch when that roar exploded out. His body had reacted before his thoughts even formed.

But he buried those words and pushed it down without letting it surface.

"We’re going back," Peter said instead, his voice firm.

He turned immediately after that, cutting off any further discussion as he moved toward the entrance to follow Red.

The others exchanged one last glance before falling in line behind him. None of them spoke again.

But the worry remained clear in their eyes as they left the dungeon behind.

Pale morning light spread faintly across the camp when Myles returned.

The air still carried the quiet weight of early dawn. Most of the camp remained asleep, bodies wrapped in blankets or slumped against whatever they could find. Slow breathing and occasional shifts were the only signs of life among them.

Those who were already awake moved through their routines without urgency. They checked weapons, adjusted supplies, or kept watch at the perimeter. None of them paid any attention to Myles and Lilian as they landed back into the camp.

Myles walked forward without hesitation. Lilian followed beside him.

They entered their tent.

Dim and still, the space felt heavy with sleep. Several figures lay scattered across the ground.

Ethan and Samantha were not there.

A distant sound of sharp and repetitive cracks that echoed faintly through the air reached Myles’ ears.

Those were gunshots. He immediately understood that they were already training.

It made sense. Those two youths never wasted time when it came to improving their abilities.

As Myles stepped further inside, two figures stirred almost at the same time.

Daniel’s eyes opened first, sharp and alert despite the lingering fatigue. Victor followed a second later. His eyes settled directly on Myles and Lilian.

They both noticed but they didn’t bother to say anything.

No questions left their mouths or any curiosity showed on their faces. They simply watched for a moment before shifting their attention away again.

They already knew that whatever Myles did, wherever he went, it wasn’t something they would get answers for, and asking would only waste time.

Myles didn’t acknowledge them either and just smiled at their understanding.

He moved quietly to his place. His body finally allowed a small hint of relaxation now that he had returned.

Outside the tent, unseen by those within, a pair of eyes remained fixed on the entrance.

Michael stood at a distance, partially hidden behind a row of tents. His gaze locked onto the spot where Myles and Lilian had just entered.

His expression tightened with suspicion, calculation. His eyes narrowed slightly as his thoughts moved rapidly behind that calm exterior.

"He came back with her again in the morning. They spent a whole night together."

Michael remained still, watching in silence.

The early morning light reflected faintly in his eyes, but it did nothing to soften the sharpness in them.
