Chapter 128: The Confidence

From the shadows of a collapsed shopping complex across the intersection, several figures observed the battle in silence.

They stayed hidden behind broken pillars and shattered glass and careful not to reveal even a flicker of their presence.

Dust drifted through the air between them as the wyvern crashed and roared under the coordinated assault.

One of them lowered his binoculars slowly.

His eyes narrowed. "They’re not panicking in that fight. Hmm... that’s weird," he muttered.

Another figure leaned against a cracked wall with arms folded. He said, "Not just that. Look at their formation. They move like they’ve fought together for years."

The third figure watched Myles slash across the wyvern’s body, then saw Victor tear through the wing membrane. His expression shifted.

"That guy in front," he said quietly. "He might be close to Alex’s level."

The name lingered heavily between them. Silence followed for a few seconds.

"They’re too confident for random survivors, don’t they?" someone added. "They don’t hesitate or move clumsily."

The man with the binoculars exhaled slowly. "If they’re really that strong, we need to consider something."

"Alliance?" one asked.

"Preferably."

"And if they refuse?"

His gaze hardened. "Then we make them understand that refusing is a mistake."

They watched a moment longer as the wyvern crashed to the ground again under Victor’s strike.

"That’s enough. We got what we came for."

Without another word, they slipped away through the ruined building, disappearing into the maze of broken streets. Their presence left no trace.

Back at the intersection, the battle intensified.

Even though it was grounded, the wyvern did not surrender. It thrashed violently, its tail sweeping across the asphalt and smashing through abandoned vehicles.

Its remaining claw slashed outward, forcing Daniel and Kade to retreat a step before they were able to re-engaging again.

Ether flared wildly from its wounds, purple light flickering erratically across its scales.

But the companions did not lose formation. They rotated smoothly.

When the wyvern lunged toward Samantha’s direction, George intercepted and forced it back. When it tried to gather Ether for another breath attack, Ethan’s bullets struck the glowing throat in rapid succession, disrupting the buildup.

Fire burned across its left flank from Kade. Frost locked its right joints from Clara. Damage continued to eat at its scales.

Myles moved constantly. He darted in and out of range, slicing weakened parts and drawing its attention whenever necessary.

Victor pressured its damaged wing even more, preventing it from regaining balance. Clara targeted the opposite side, freezing its tendons and slowing its muscle response further.

The wyvern’s movements grew heavier. Its roars turned ragged. Their coordination crushed its options and every direction it turned, another attack awaited.

Finally, an opening appeared.

Myles sprinted forward as the wyvern staggered.

He leapt and drove his two blades straight into its blazing purple eyes. The blades embedded deep and Ether exploded inward its head.

The wyvern screamed and thrashed blindly.

Victor charged immediately after with his greenish huge cleaver and carving through the already torn left wing, severing the remaining membrane completely.

Clara followed with precise timing. Her frost spear pierced through the right wing joint and unleashed a surge of freezing energy that locked the limb.

The guardian collapsed onto its chest.

George stepped forward with a snarl. His hammer rose high then came down with overwhelming force onto the wyvern’s skull.

CRACK!

It shattered the wyvern’s skull. Ether mist ruptured outward in a violent burst of purple light.

Then silence fell. The massive body lay still.

The glow beneath its scales faded gradually until only cracked asphalt and scattered debris remained.

This time, none of them trembled. No one gasped in fear.

They stood over the fallen guardian with steady breathing and clear eyes.

At this point confidence settled within them, stronger than before.

A red translucent panel appeared before each of them.

The notification hovered quietly in the air, then faded slowly from their vision.

For a second, no one moved. Then they looked at each other.

Victor let out a rough breath before a grin spread across his face.

"It’s not as hard as I thought," Victor said.

"We’ve really become stronger," George said, resting his hammer against his shoulder as if it weighed nothing. A wide smile stretched across his face.

They were not trembling or shaken. They were standing together with ease.

Myles felt the difference clearly. It was not just in strength but in their bearings. They no longer looked like survivors barely holding on. They looked like fighters who understood their power.

A small smile formed on his face. They had earned this moment.

They shared a smile and realization of their power and allowed the tension to loosen.

Lilian watched from a short distance away.

Her black wings rested quietly behind her back. She said nothing.

A faint smile that looked sad and happy at the same time curved her lips as she observed them.

They were growing faster than she expected. They were now stronger, more coordinated and confident.

But deep inside her eyes, a different thought flickered. She knows that this world would not allow all of them to survive until the end.

It never worked that way. The trials would only grow harsher. Enemies would only become more stronger and merciless.

Among them, only one carried the potential to truly break through the ceiling of this world.

It was Myles. He was the one with the highest chance to endure what was coming.

The others... she did not know.

But she would not say it.

They did not need that burden right now. Myles did not need doubt planted in his heart. Even if the truth one day proved cruel.

Just like what happened to her at the beginning. The past lingered silently in her thoughts before she pushed it away.

Myles turned toward the road ahead.

The intersection no longer felt oppressive after the barrier was gone. The path that had once been sealed by the guardian now stretched open, leading deeper into the broken city.

The air ahead felt denser.

"Alright. We must move again," Myles said.

The group gathered their weapons properly and fell into formation again without being told.

They stepped past the corpse of the fallen wyvern and entered the deeper part of the street that had once been closed to them.
