Apocalypse: Reborn with a Soul Sync Farming Space System-Chapter 43 Heat Wave
Laurel thought for a while. "You are right, we need to be in the same place because of the medication. But for using your hideout as plan B, are you sure you want that?"
Laurel asked, she didn’t want to appear greedy, even if the offer was so tempting.
"Yes, absolutely." His honey brown eyes squinted a little.
"Then, I’m afraid you can’t back out of it anymore, that was the only chance you got," Laurel replied with a polite smile.
Chris’s lips slightly pulled up into a smirk. "I’m all yours now."
The way he said it made something in Laurel’s chest flutter.
Laurel couldn’t help but meet his gaze, it was like she was getting drawn into the depths of his eyes.
She quickly averted her gaze, clearing her throat.
Chris turned around. "Close them." He ordered.
Sweat trickled down his temples. His body swayed slightly, and Laurel quickly rushed to his side.
"Are you okay?" She asked with concern evident in her voice.
Chris nodded, trying to move away from her. "I’m fine."
But Laurel didn’t believe him, she walked him to the nearest chair, helping him sit.
She took his hand, placing her fingers on his wrist. His heartbeat was palpitating.
Laurel’s brows furrowed. "The heat is affecting you," she muttered under her breath.
The space water could help him, but she needed to talk about it with Ling Xuan.
She sighed in annoyance. "I’m giving the space water to Chris." She said in her head.
"Okay." Ling Xuan replied.
Laurel’s eyes widened. "You agreed just like that?"
"Yes. He has some value." Ling Xuan replied with a dismissive tone.
Laurel wanted to roll her eyes, but instead turned to Chris. "Wait here for me, I’ll get you a bottle of water."
Chris nodded his head, trying to focus more on his breathing.
Laurel walked away from the warehouse to a spot where no one could see her. She moved a bottle of space water with her thought from her space.
Then she walked back to where Chris was sitting, and she opened it, giving it to him.
Chris wanted to refuse the water, he felt it couldn’t help him. But he collected it from her and took a sip. The moment the water went down his throat, he felt his body cooling.
His racing heart, beating normally again. His brows creased, and he took another sip of the water.
He glanced at Laurel who was watching him with a hopeful gaze, then he stared at the bottle of water in his hand.
He knew this wasn’t just water... however, he didn’t ask her about it. He believed that when the right time came, she would tell him willingly.
....
A week had passed since the heat wave. On the streets of Luxebridge city, not one single soul was walking on it.
In the northern part of the city, trees, houses suddenly caught fire from the heat. It was like the place was thrown into chaos.
Even the newspapers floating in the streets were nothing but ashes now. Smoke came out of the earth as if the earth too was pleading for mercy.
By noon, emergency sirens wailed endlessly through the central Luxebridge city, their cries cutting through the thick, suffocating air.
Fire trucks splashed water on both sides of the streets, and the boiling sound of water filled the air. They moved only to stall halfway as the engines overheated and tires melted slightly against the road. Smoke curled into the sky in ugly black columns, blotting out the sun until the daylight turned a sickly orange.
Those who dared step outside wrapped their faces in wet cloths, but it barely helped. Skin blistered within minutes. Shoes softened and stuck to the road.
Metal doors scorched hands the moment they were touched. Inside apartments, fans spun uselessly, pushing hot air from one corner to another. Power grids failed one after another, plunging entire districts into darkness.
Hospitals were overflowing with patients.
Stretchers lined the corridors, patients gasping for breath, their lips cracked and blue. The air conditioner in the hospital was blowing hot.
Many people gave up the ghost on the hospital bed, others cried to be saved, while others wailed over their lost ones.
News drones hovered briefly before dropping from the air, their circuits fried. Emergency broadcasts cut off mid-sentence. Government reassurances turned to static.
Everyone had thought the heat condition would improve after a few days, but they never knew it was only getting worse.
Laurel sat in the sitting room listening to the news and watching the chaos. The temperature was already 60 degrees Celsius. 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦
Alexander stood beside Laurel with a slight frown. He wondered how she knew about the heat wave becoming worse.
He had sold some of the Waynes’ property, which she warned would be lost to the extreme heat.
He parted his lips to speak, but the TV suddenly glitched with a distorting noise and image. And in the next second, it went blank.
After a few seconds, it suddenly came back to life. A man in a black mask suddenly filled the screen.
"Hello, people of Luxebridge city." His voice was highly distorted and a little mechanical.
Laurel frowned as she sat upright. This.. This never happened in her past life. Did she miss something?
Who was the man? And why was the timeline diverging?
"The city is suffering, and the suffering... is only the beginning.
You call this a heat wave because you do not yet understand what it truly is. This is the world dying.
After the heat wave, comes rain. But it won’t last for long. Those who remain unprepared will not survive it.
The world you know is ending. The heat is merely the first warning.
Yet mankind mankind does not need to disappear, mankind can still be saved. We have prepared for what is coming.
We are here to give you hope.
We are the Severance cult.
We have shelter, resources, and certainty. Those who stand with us will be protected. Those who hesitate... will be left to face the world alone.
Join us while you still can... before the world decides for you." The glitch at the end.
The TV glitched again, and it turned blank before returning to the normal news that was being watched.
