Chapter 33: Chapter 33 Harvest

Laurel grabbed her car keys and stepped out of her room immediately.

The moment she stepped outside the mansion, the heat slapped her in the face.

She let out an irritated sigh, before entering her car. She drove to the warehouse. She said a brief greeting to Nate and the other guard before heading straight to the farmland.

Her steps faltered a bit when she saw the crops had fully grown, ripe for harvest. The corn stalks were tall, the bean vines were full, and the tomatoes looked red and juicy. The whole field looked like it had been growing for months.

"I can help with the harvesting." Ling Xuan’s voice echoed in her head.

Laurel almost chuckled out of disbelief. "You want to help?"

"Harvesting requires strength. I can help you with it." Ling Xuan replied.

"Hmm okay. You can help with the potatoes, but they are not ready yet. I’ll start with the easy ones before they are ready." Laurel said.

Ling Xuan didn’t say another word, and Laurel took it as a yes.

She dressed in a thin layer of clothing and wore a bamboo hat because of the scorching sun.

Laurel thought of some harvesting tools which she had gotten from the system, a harvest sickle, and a hoe. And they appeared in front of her.

She thought of sack bags and wooden crates, and they also appeared in front of her.

She walked forward and crouched beside the first corn row, the silk was brown and dry. She reached out and gripped the first cob firmly, twisted it slightly, then she pulled it downward, and it came off clean in her hand. Laurel stared in amazement, because it was so fresh and full.

She placed it in the sack beside her, then she moved to the next stalk and did the same thing again. She kept twisting and pulling the ears of the corn, repeating the motion until the sack slowly filled up.

Laurel glanced at the Crop status panel hovering near her wrist. The crops that were ready with a hundred percent were showing green when they first popped up. Now the green was slowly moving to a shade of yellow, indicating she was running out of time.

She quickly moved to the beans. The vines clung lightly to the stick she had set up, and the pods hung from them neatly.

Some of the pods were already turning brown, dry, and brittle, while the others were green and fresh.

She reached out and gently snapped the pods off, until her palm was full, she then poured them into a sack. She separated the fresh green beans from the dry ones.

She let out a tired sigh as she held her waist.

Next were the tomatoes. She walked to the section where she had transplanted the seedlings the previous day.

She had been worried the heat would fry them before they settled into the soil. Looking at them now she almost laughed. If she knew the space water worked wonders, she wouldn’t have bothered making the seedlings’ bed.

They looked healthier than she had expected, the tomatoes were red and plump.

She gently twisted one off the stem and held it carefully, as if she were inspecting it. A smile bloomed on her face. Then, she placed it into a basket so it wouldn’t bruise.

She harvested the rest slowly, her movement a little careful, because she knew if she didn’t handle them properly, they might get bruised and that would make them rot faster, and she couldn’t afford any waste.

Then, her gaze moved to the millet. Unlike the others, this wasn’t something she could just pluck with her hand.

The stalks were tall and thin, and the heads were full, heavy with grain.

"Sister Ling Xuan, you can take over from here. I’ll direct you on what to do." Laurel said, pressing her lips into a thin line, as if she was waiting for her to refuse her suggestion.

The next second, her body twitched, her head lowered. Then, her tired eyes became cold and calculating.

Ling Xuan stretched her arms as she stared at the field, the sack of maize and beans, and the basket of tomatoes.

"Why didn’t you tell me you were taking over? That was too sudden." Laurel complained.

Ling Xuan remained quiet. Her gaze fell on the sickle, and she approached it and grabbed it, before heading back to the field.

"Do you know how to harvest millet? You have to cut the stalk near the base..."

"I know." Ling Xuan cut in.

She adjusted her hand on the sickle. "I have done it before." She said in irritation.

"Have you worked on a farm before? I thought you hated it?" Laurel probed further.

Ever since they have been sharing the body and space. Laurel knew nothing about Ling Xuan, and Ling Xuan had never made any attempt to tell her about her past.

Ling Xuan’s eyes darkened at her question. "I hate farming doesn’t mean I have never done it before." Her hand tightened around the sickle, she swung it with full force, cutting the millet in a clean bundle.

Laurel could feel Ling Xuan’s reluctance to talk about it. She wondered what her past was, and why she had such a strong reaction to farming.

Ling Xuan kept cutting, bundling them together, and stacking them to the side until she had several piles together.

Ling Xuan was inwardly grateful that Laurel didn’t press on her past, even if she didn’t want to admit it.

Her arms started to ache slightly, and sweat gathered on her forehead, and trickled down her back. The sun was already in the middle of the sky, and it was burning hot.

Ling Xuan dropped the sickle and walked toward the stream. She splashed water on her face to cool off. Then she thought of a bottle of water, and it appeared in her hand from inside the space.

After she had drunk enough, she wiped her lips with the back of her hand. She frowned, noticing how weak and tired the body was already.

When she was finished, she glanced at the crop status panel again.

[Potatoes: ready for harvest. {100%}]
