Chapter 64: Just And Reasonable

Some time in the afternoon...

"Hah... as expected," Aiden sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose.

The proud enforcers were standing in front of him. However, their heads hung low.

Why you ask?

Because they didn’t waste any time showing off their ’supreme’ intelligence.

Out of the twenty-four people, only seven of them decided to pick weapons instead of high-quality food from the vending machines.

The rest had splurged all of it away. A few of them even visited the entertainment floor. After all, it was the first time they had the money to do so.

The problem wasn’t with what they did, but because their priorities were all messed up.

Other than Aiden and the enforcers, Karina and the wolves were also on the first basement level.

All of them were proud owners of combat gauntlets. Aiden had also given them some free food at their request, instead of a massage as he had planned before.

As for the original wolf trio, Aiden awarded them enhanced combat gauntlets. All of their loyalties and affections rose upon receiving the gifts.

Perhaps that’s why they were glaring at the enforcers, while the latter had their heads hung low.

"Gr—EEK!"

One of the blind hobgoblins growled, only to get hit by Karina. Four blind hobgoblins were tied to a support beam.

Perhaps the smell of humans excited the hobgoblins, that’s why the monster growled. It was to be expected since they had gotten used to eating four meals a day. Now that they had been tied until the afternoon, they were hungry.

The enforcers were supposed to fight these hungry hobgoblins, but with only seven of them having weapons, the wolves thought Aiden would leave them be for now. 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆𝙬𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝒎

"Untie them," Aiden waved his hand dismissively.

"Sir...?" Glenn mumbled, his eyes darting between the enforcers and Aiden.

"You heard him," Karina ordered, standing behind Aiden, crossing her arms.

The wolves heard Karina and were taken aback for a moment. They could understand why Aiden would force the enforcers, but they hadn’t expected Karina to back him up.

After all, wasn’t she the one who saved them from the camp?

While the wolves were thinking that, someone was already untying the hobgoblins.

"Marcus!" Elena urged, hoping he would understand the situation.

Unfortunately, Marcus was completely loyal to Aiden. His words were all that mattered to him. If he wanted the hobgoblins untied, then they would get untied.

Meanwhile, Aiden walked to the enforcers and smiled.

"Listen up!" he yelled. "Since most of you failed the intelligence test and didn’t buy weapons, I’ll make this exam easier for you."

The crowd let out a sigh of relief. A few of them even looked smug as they looked at those who chose weapons instead of filling meals.

Ha! We got food, and now we’ll get free weapons!

That’s what they probably thought when Aiden said he would make the exam easier. But all those thoughts disappeared when Aiden spoke next.

"Instead of going in teams, all of you will fight all the hobgoblins at once—"

"What?" Caleb, one of the enforcers, interrupted him. "Sir, with all due respect, you cannot do that—"

Before the guy could even complete his words, Aiden waved his hands, and the man disappeared from the basement like he hadn’t been standing there a second ago.

[Tenant: Caleb Olson has been evicted.]

Those words flashed before everyone in the building, not just Aiden. A moment later, there was a scream followed by a desperate pounding on the barrier.

"Why can’t I enter the building!? SOMEONE HELP! HELP ME PLEASE!"

"Tsk, so loud."

Aiden clicked his tongue and quickly gave the guards a mission to deal with him. There was a gunshot, and everything went quiet again.

The enforcers and wolves both gulped down the voices of protest along with their saliva.

"Just because I treat you marginally better than I would treat those monsters, doesn’t mean you can interrupt me whenever you like," Aiden said after calming himself.

"If you don’t want the same to happen to you, then don’t ever tell me what I can or cannot do. I didn’t take you all in for charity. You want to enjoy the place, then you have to work your ass off for it. Understood?"

As he finished his lecture, something strange happened.

[Community loyalty has increased by 2%]

[Community affection has increased by 1%]

The entire apartment’s loyalty and affection increased?

[Yes, host. The tenants perceive your actions as just and reasonable.]

Aiden almost wanted to laugh at their naivety. One could argue about his actions being reasonable, but just? He got a man killed on a whim. That wasn’t just. It was a lesson.

If he wanted to be just, he could have let the system enforce the contract as it did with Marcus.

As for Caleb’s talent, well, he could always find someone else. All he’d need to do was to use another token and, surprise, someone would replace him.

I already have too many people here. Talent can be replaced, but someone’s character cannot.

Soon, the hobgoblins were freed, so Aiden said his parting words to the enforcers.

"I don’t care how you do it," he said, pointing at the hobgoblins. "As long as you kill them, you’ll be rewarded. If you fail, getting evicted would be the least of your worries."

As soon as he said that, Karina stepped back, making space for the upcoming fight. The wolves followed suit, leaving the enforcers in the center of the basement to fight the blind creatures.

"Do you want me to step in if things get out of hand?" Karina asked, her eyes fixed on the monster.

"Only if those with weapons are in danger," Aiden shrugged, watching someone trying to poke a hobgoblin with a makeshift spear. "It would be a shame to lose them so early."

He liked those who followed the path he desired for them. Since the people with weapons had done that, Aiden would naturally protect them.

Well, At least until they do something to piss him off.
