Chapter 236: Mowing the Lawn- I

John Wang POV

***

The back garden, so to speak, looked horrible when we stepped out of the massive, military grade cargo door. All that awaited was a barren wasteland of mud, destroyed buildings, and roaming undead. Jiang Siwan and a few of the guards led us out into the yard and explained some of the rules.

"Li Ya, Tang Wei, and you must return to this point before sunset to pass."

I watched her expression, but Siwan avoided my gaze as if desperate.

"Any other rules?"

She looked at me for a flash, then back to Li Ya with a cold expression. "No, you may begin."

Without hesitation, Li Ya dashed forward and leapt from the raised platform twenty feet down. Her right hand blurred before I could see what she did—but two zombies dropped lifelessly in an instant.

I looked back at Jiang Siwan, who let out a long sigh. "Wait for me, if I do well. Give me a nice reward."

Before she could refuse, I took a deep breath and rushed towards the edge of the platform, lowered my body and leapt like Li Ya, but instead of using a spear.

I summoned two Type-9 Ks.

The cold steel felt great as I rained death on the weak Stage One zombies amassed beneath the stone ledge.

"W-Wait... You!?" Siwans’ shouts echoed as I dropped, drowned out by the crackle of my guns.

"John!" A voice called to me, soft yet sweet like a spring wind. freeweɓnovel-cøm

I turned back to see Tang Wei dropping from above wearing one of the ECS-Type 5 suits, the sight of it clinging to her dark, exotic body almost stunned me. She flew past me with a wink, then used her feet to push off the stone while holding her tactical shotgun.

"You look so good in that suit!" Her voice echoed through the artificial valley.

I agree, Wei Wei. It makes your ass look great, too.

Thud!

The moment I landed in the soft mud sucked me down, knocking me off balance, "fuck there’s hundreds... maybe more!" A complaint left my mouth as a buzz sounded in my ear. We borrowed the headsets from the base to avoid any serious accidents, or maybe they just wanted to keep an eye on me.

"What’s the matter handsome, don’t like it wet and sticky?" Li Ya giggled in the distance, her spear flicking another corpse to the ground.

I looked up at Tang Wei’s back as she spun through the horde of zombies with a shotgun in hand, sending a torrent of lead and mud into the undead like a beautiful dancer on stage performing for the first time. "Sit down!" Her voice echoed through the vast plains.

These women both loved to fight and kill zombies...

"Phew... so where are the real dangers?"

[Scanning area]

[Detected Horde of Stage Two zombies]

[Number: 352]

[Detected Group of Stage Three zombies]

[Number: 18]

The scan ended with a low ping as my foot crushed a zombie’s head in the dirt—the mud made everything difficult. I needed to watch my steps, placing a foot on a rock or something firm, or else the mud might pull me under.

"I love the way you’re watching me!" Li Ya yelled, her spear a blur as she spun it like a helicopter, the blade cutting and slicing through them. She became different during combat. This woman was the fiery woman I met the other night, much different from the stern and calm military woman.

Tap-Tap!

Since the two were shouting, I used the intercom.

"Phew... Tang Wei, head to the east with Li Ya, and deal with the Stage One enemies, which are close to a thousand. Burn your energy, and come meet me in the west."

Without waiting for their response, I followed the red dots on my screen and headed west. Since this task was related to Jiang Roulan, I didn’t hold back, but that didn’t mean I couldn’t have some fun.

The howl of my Type 9K’s echoed through the valley on my way to the Stage Two Horde.

I ran for almost five minutes, killing the entire time until my foot stepped on dry, cracked land. The atmosphere immediately changed—a dense cloud of death surrounded me, while hundreds of dark figures loomed ahead like shadows.

There wasn’t much danger for me, so I flicked both wrists and brought out my gauntlets, ready to have some fun. The eight shotgun shells whirred in their chambers, prepared to shoot.

Crack-Crack-Crack!

My leg flashed out and snapped one zombie’s neck before it even noticed me.

A Stage Two - Hunter... a H2 using the code the others used?

They were fast... but after evolving, I realised the difference in stages wasn’t fair. "I guess this is how they feel hunting normal humans..."

The Hunter’s speed was around double the average person and was still too slow to pose any threat.

"Let’s have a look at your body, then..."

With a wet sound, I pulled out the green core. It rolled on my palm, still warm. These things couldn’t help me anymore. So I planned to use them for Deng Hua and Chen Xun, who had worked so hard for me.

I needed some men who could follow me into these dangerous situations, letting my women constantly risk themselves is something I want to avoid now.

And if they betray me... well...

No point thinking about that, since the System ranks their loyalty as high as Mu Qinglan and Jiang Roulan’s right now, so I didn’t want to think about the possibility of losing any of them...

"John! You said we could have fun." Li Ya’s voice buzzed in my ear.

"You can."

"Ahh~ these zombies no longer tickle my fancy... Wei Wei let’s hurry up and hunt a stronger prey."

"Ya Ya... don’t."

The two sounded close over the communications.

[Two B2’s 30 feet east]

I let out a sigh, looking at the stack of Stage Two cores in my inventory, wondering what I would do with more than 300 of them. I could probably bring my entire group to the pinnacle of Stage Three with these.

Initially, the task seemed annoying, but thanks to this, I couldn’t help but thank Jiang Siwan and her father.

"Let’s put aside a small portion of them for Siwan as a gift. I am sure they expected some cores, otherwise their strength wouldn’t be so high."

The average guard in the Jiang base was Stage Two.

It wasn’t an overwhelming Stage Two, as it seemed they hadn’t yet grasped that cores only enhance a specific bodily attribute.

"I’m glad I made sure to balance all my group... only Mu Qinglan and Shen Yifei have a higher speed than other stats... Roulan’s Strength and Spirit are much higher than her Physique and Agility too..."

Muttering to myself, a flash of green darted past my vision.

"Hmm?"

[Stage 3 - Hunter]

A small bar appeared over the deformed zombie’s head.

The zombie rushed at me with the desire to behead me... yet all I did was tilt my head slowly, and it missed so easily.

"Am I still human?"

With a sigh, I pushed off the ground and lunged at the zombie. I reached him in less than a second. Lifted my right arm and pulled the trigger, sending four slugs into the zombie’s cranium.

I spent an hour dealing with these zombies, using no more than 25% of my energy while the two girls burned out their reserves.

It might have been longer, since I stopped counting after learning how inefficient I fought in the past. "Well, only Stage Four and Five pose me any danger..."

Thankfully, Li Ya and Tang Wei didn’t have any troubles, but they did start to speak to me more often, especially Tang Wei.

"Hey John, we’re finished here can we come to the west?"

"Of course, be careful of any stragglers..."

Since coming to this base, I felt a slight rift with Tang Wei, but at the same time, her affection and loyalty to me skyrocketed. I don’t know the reason, but I made sure to have Wang Yin keep an eye on her mother.

"When I told her the doctor was looking after her, she seemed happy."

I sat on a broken monument, the space around me covered in corpses, the dismantle feature long became unavailable due to being out of range.. So I wondered about buying a technique or skill to dispose of the bodies to lower the chance of disease or risk to other humans.

"John!" Tang Wei’s voice echoed from behind me.

"Took you long enough, Wei Wei." I called her by a nickname, as her current affection and loyalty allowed me to recruit her to test the waters, but I hadn’t done so.

Why?

Well... as I watched her jogging towards me in the bodysuit, it became pretty clear to me.

Apart from Zhou Xue, I have slept with most of the S-Tier beauties who became members of my team... and I knew that I would bed this woman the moment we grew closer.

Not for any other reason than because I wanted to.

I watched the beautiful woman with sweaty bronze skin rushing to my side, with Li Ya, another red-haired beauty with dark skin, chasing her.

They both looked at ease.

[Warning Stage 4 signal detected]

My eyes opened wide.

A curved red blade created a gleaming red trail as it sliced the air.
