America 1982-Chapter 533 - 105: No Cubans_4
Not only the audience, but the six candidates couldn’t help but turn their faces and widen their eyes towards Jeff Raven, unable to fathom why he would utter such a remark. It was known that the main viewers in front of the televisions tonight were the voters from the Eighteenth District, and 45% of these voters were of Cuban descent. It might be nothing to crack this kind of racial joke with white supporters on the streets, but this was a live TV broadcast, and what was said could not be taken back.
Even the moderator, who was a quarter Cuban, incredulously widened his eyes and broke the rules by asking, "I’m sorry, what did you just say?"
"Thank you, moderator, that’s an excellent question. I once asked the children while volunteering at an elementary school what they thought the Eighteenth District would look like when they grew up to be my age, what Miami would look like. They described many beautiful scenes that broke my heart—the scenes were bizarre, with beautiful landscapes, tall buildings, spaceships, alien friends. Do you know what these images had in common? No Cubans."
As Jeff reached the last phrase, "No Cubans," the smile on his face and in his eyes quickly faded, becoming as cold and hard as stone.
99% of the audience, regardless of gender, subconsciously covered their mouths with their hands!
If the first statement was shocking, the second phrase "No Cubans" escalated to an earth-shaking level!
Jeff, with a stern face, primarily focused his gaze on the audience but occasionally glanced at the camera on Tommy’s reminder so that viewers in front of their TVs could notice his fierce and resolute gaze:
"Some candidates say to improve the economy, we should raise taxes on the wealthy and large corporations in our district, then use that money to improve public welfare and basic livelihoods in our district. I want to ask, in the United State America, is it wrong to work hard and become rich? Why should we rob them of the money in their pockets? Over the past years, has the Eighteenth District always done this, and has the economy improved? No, it’s gotten worse because those responsible, insisting on hiring regular workers and signing contracts, those rich people and big companies have already left. Look, how many companies you once knew have completely disappeared, moving to the Caribbean, Mexico, or even Asia. They run off overseas to employ local workers, and the people of the Eighteenth District who once had stable jobs can no longer earn a penny. Is being wealthy a crime in the Eighteenth District?" 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚
"If I am elected, I will call on Congress in Washington to legislate the deportation of all illegal aliens from America. This is my approach to reviving the economy and increasing employment."
"I don’t know if other candidates have looked into the data from refugee centers, immigration jails, and some related documents available to the public in the Eighteenth District, but I have. The first illegal Cuban immigrants arrived in Miami’s Eighteenth District by smuggling themselves in since 1961 and began to receive refugee benefits, enjoying humanitarian medical welfare, and still haven’t gained legal status till today, a full twenty-eight years."
"A Cuban illegal worker in America, working off the books, maliciously evading taxes, undercutting and stealing job opportunities that belong to American citizens, sends the money earned back to Cuba, and then enjoys the relief and humanitarian welfare provided by the taxpayer money of the Eighteenth District’s American citizens, for twenty-eight years in total!"
"Do you know how many Cuban illegal immigrants there are in the Eighteenth District? The data I retrieved from the municipal government is more than forty-three thousand people, nearly a one-to-one ratio with the legal Cuban-American citizens."
"These forty-three thousand plus Cuban illegal immigrants are entrenched in the Eighteenth District, unscrupulously sucking the blood of our American citizens, spending our taxes, stealing our jobs, undermining our public security. The moderator asked me, how to restore the economy, how to increase employment, my answer is simple, drive these foreigners out of our home!"
"I had an accountant help me calculate the data I retrieved, and I got a string of numbers. If we drive out these Cuban illegal immigrants, the average family income in the Eighteenth District could increase by 27%, job positions could increase by at least four thousand, and the crime rate could decrease by 37%."
"I can make it even clearer. For example, an American worker with legal status who works hard for a year can earn $10,000, but after driving out more than forty thousand Cuban illegal immigrants, next year you could earn $12,700. The extra $2,700, that’s big money, enough to buy a new car for your child coming of age as an adult gift."
"$2,700 is also what those damned Cuban illegal immigrants suck from your body in a year. Perhaps you’d also like to know, they..."
The moderator couldn’t help interrupting Jeff, "Mr. Raven, your time is up, you..."
Jeff didn’t even glance at him, just continued speaking to the audience, "They have been sucking the blood of the Eighteenth District for nearly thirty years, how much money you’ve lost, the accountant helped me calculate, $2,700 times 30 years is $81,000."
"If this continues, Cuba won’t need to invade America. It can suck out our sustenance and grow into a second Soviet Union, and it’s just one step away from us without Europe in front."
The moderator again tried to speak, "Mr. Raven, I hope you adhere to the election debate..."
Jeff raised his voice, drowning out the other’s, "This is my answer. I hope when my child grows up and volunteers, asking children what the Eighteenth District will look like when they grow up to be my age, what Miami will look like, they can give the same answer, no Cubans."
Jeff finished in one breath and then looked towards the moderator, "Thank you, moderator. I have finished my statement regarding the district’s economy and employment issues."
Once Jeff truly quieted down, the moderator didn’t know what to say, and the cameraman, avoiding capturing the image of the moderator’s speechlessness, immediately switched the camera to focus on the other candidates, giving the moderator a couple of seconds.
But the other candidates’ expressions were no better than the moderator’s. When switching back to the audience, although the people in the stands remained silent, their heavy breathing clearly indicated they were far from as calm as they appeared.
"To most people, having no Cubans isn’t important, but an extra $81,000 is," Tommy said with satisfaction, watching the studio’s reaction through the television in the room.
