America 1982-Chapter 529 - 104: Professor Tommy’s Political Mini-Lecture_3
A Beetle came from afar and stopped by the side of the road outside Jeff’s house, with Louise DuVille, clad in business attire, too impatient to get out of the car as she waved the handbag in her hand: "Tommy, this is tonight’s topic, the real deal! Obtained through special channels at the Democratic Party office! Why are Martin and Jeff’s phones either not answering or turned off!"
But to her disappointment, Tommy did not come running over with excitement to snatch the topic materials from her bag; instead, he stood in place, cigarette in mouth, smirking as he stared at her.
"What’s the matter? You knew in advance?" Louise opened the car door and got out, her handbag in hand as she walked towards Tommy and asked.
Tommy lowered his head to look at the road, then scanned the surroundings in the distance, finally turning his gaze to the political science graduate beauty in front of him, smiling as he spoke: "Did you foolishly take it upon yourself to set up Jeff, or did someone instruct you to do it? You better think clearly before you answer this question."
Louise was slightly taken aback by Tommy’s words, but immediately asked in surprise, "What are you talking about?"
"It wasn’t you," Tommy observed Louise for a few seconds, then said with certainty: "Rosario’s campaign team, anonymous friends of other strong candidates, I saved you, girl."
Louise DuVille stared blankly back at Tommy for a dozen seconds, suddenly breathing heavily as if drowning, her handbag so hot to the touch, she tossed it away hastily, even kicking it far away with her high heels after it fell to the ground.
"The other side probably didn’t expect that I had been with Jeff eight hours before the debate started, following his every move. According to their thinking, I shouldn’t be here, and the material in your hand would have ended up with Jeff and Martin. As for why their phones are unreachable, only two phones can contact them, but I must answer them first," Tommy said calmly to Louise: "It’s naturally to prevent sudden incidents like this before the primary." 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢
He then raised his voice and shouted, "Mr. Page!"
Page walked over from the front porch, and Tommy pointed towards Louise: "This girl probably has some little gadgets on her, help her out, find them."
Page gestured for Louise to follow him, and without objection, she walked towards Jeff’s garage like a marionette following Page’s lead.
Ten minutes later, Louise reappeared in one of Jessica’s floral home dresses, and Page said to Tommy from a distance, expressionless: "There’s a micro listening device inside the lining of the handbag."
"Politics isn’t just an interplay of power and beauty, Miss, it also includes betrayal and deceit. You think you know political science, but the courses don’t teach you just how ugly human nature can be," Tommy lit another cigarette and said to an even more numb-faced Louise than Page: "Your best friend? Your closest colleague? No matter the role, if you had actually given that thing to Martin or Jeff, you’d have to figure out how to quell Rosario’s rage next."
"Klein, my boyfriend, he’s the team’s executive secretary," Louise reached out, took the cigarette from Tommy’s mouth, and took a puff: "It can’t be him, we’ve been together since college. It’s impossible, I trust that he was just conveying Tom’s or Rona’s arrangements. He wouldn’t do this, he couldn’t be another candidate’s informant."
"But you don’t dare to call Tom Chafee or Rona right away to confirm, because you fear that it would ruin your last bit of hope," Tommy licked his lips after his cigarette was taken, turning to walk back into the house:
"Learn to adapt. This is the real political science, a brand-new course that you will never learn in college classes. Your performance in this lesson was very poor, you should have failed, but lucky enough, Professor Tommy has given you a chance to retake."
"What should I do?" Louise called out to Tommy’s retreating figure.
Tommy glanced at the woman standing in place: "Have a drink, get some sleep, and if when you wake up, you’re still determined to continue this work of serving politicians, remind yourself that all your relatives, friends, classmates, from the moment you get up, are out to get you, to ruin you beyond recovery. You must carefully listen to every word they say to you, as it could all be lies. Only when the person you serve wins, takes the seat they want, do you truly get a break, and the trust and emotions between you and them temporarily revert to normal. So it goes, over and over, until retirement."
"Maybe I’ll go mad before retirement?" Louise said self-deprecatingly.
Tommy looked down at his watch for a moment, and without turning his head back, he walked towards the living room entrance, responding, "On the contrary, many American schemers are addicted to this work. When have you ever seen those top campaign strategists for the President, those gold-star managers for the big electoral consulting firms go mad? Never. They only have two outcomes: they become like your boyfriend, advancing further professionally, or they become like you, ending their career."
The next second, Tommy disappeared inside the living room door.
One hour and thirty-seven minutes remained until the start of the election.
