America 1982-Chapter 348 - 30: The Initial Intention Behind Entering the Television Industry_3
"I can’t believe there are still people out there who think Tommy respects women, when this guy just said in front of me that he wants all the young women in California to marry him, quite the appetite, Tommy," Sophia said sarcastically.
"I’ve always had a big appetite," Tommy nodded, not denying it.
Sophia turned to Ottelia, "You should be careful, Ottelia. You heard him, this guy just showed his true colors, he’s got designs on all the young girls in California."
"I think the person who needs to be careful is you, Sophia. If Tommy really is that bad, as his assistant, you’d be the first woman he’d harm," Ottelia said with a smile to Sophia. Then she turned her head to Tommy with a firm gaze and said:
"He respects women, I’m sure of it."
But soon, Ottelia’s face changed:
"But I don’t understand why every time you belittle the American justice system, you bring up me and Sophia’s names? What’s wrong with us studying at law school?"
After speaking, Ottelia placed her own sandwich, which had fried eggs, Spanish chorizo, and half-melted Swiss chocolate, onto Tommy’s plate:
"This is the price you pay for mocking me and Sophia."
In Ottelia’s view, forcing Tommy to eat two high-calorie, high-fat sandwiches for breakfast was a particularly vicious punishment.
"Maybe I should add mine too?" Sophia, with a bit of schadenfreude, pushed the untouched sandwich in front of her towards Tommy as well.
Tommy looked at the three sandwiches before him and started eating without hesitation. His appetite seemed to have opened up and within minutes he had swallowed them all down, then picked up his coffee for a sip, "I said, I’ve always had a big appetite."
"I don’t think it’s a matter of appetite, but rather that Dorothy’s breakfasts are really delicious," Ottelia said as she saw Tommy eat all the sandwiches, dividing two portions of apple turnovers for herself and Sophia to appease their hunger.
"Dorothy’s culinary skills are indeed splendid, but I’m still puzzled as to why, after I suggested she should learn to make a Chinese breakfast for me two weeks ago, not once has Chinese food appeared on the breakfast table," Tommy bluntly changed the subject.
"If it weren’t for the substantial wages you pay, your gardener and other servants would have sued both Dorothy and you in court a long time ago. Her children are also prepared to sever ties with her due to the constant pressure of tasting her various practice dishes. Dorothy practices hard every day but only wishes to ensure she doesn’t poison anyone and that the food is delicious before daring to serve it to you. Don’t let him change the subject, Ottelia, make him..."
Tommy cut Sophia off before she could finish her suggestion, redirecting the question to an earlier one, "Let’s go back to Ottelia’s original question, OK? Why did I enter the television industry? Because now and for a long time to come, I believe that compared to newspapers, television is a more important medium for the public to recognize the truth and understand the world. The eyes are the windows to the soul, and I am the eyes of the American people. I will show them the truth they need to see."
Ottelia nodded thoughtfully, for her boyfriend always had a grand and impeccable reason for whatever he did.
Previously when dealing with software, he wanted to change the fate of the common people through technology and knowledge.
Now working in television, he wanted to be the eyes through which Americans could see the truth and understand the world.
"So you think the current television networks are deceiving the American people, and you are ready to show the audience the truth?" Following the answer Tommy had given her, Ottelia posed another question, "Doesn’t that mean all the television networks will give you as much resistance as the Lotus Corporation, and that your television station might become known to the American people for one competition or conflict, like what happened with Actor?"
"No, there might be competition based on ratings, but it won’t happen in the way you think," Tommy said confidently to Ottelia. "Moreover, in my plans, the reason BT Television will be remembered by the American people for the first time isn’t because of ratings wars or conflicts."
"Then in your plans, what will make BT Television known nationwide for the first time?" Ottelia asked curiously.
"Because BT Television will show the American people..." Tommy finished his last sip of coffee, wiped his mouth, and said with a smile:
"a beautiful sight to behold."
"Oh... That must be very beautiful," Ottelia heard what seemed to be a nonchalant answer from Tommy and didn’t pursue it further, responding just as casually before continuing to enjoy her breakfast.
It wasn’t until Ottelia had finished breakfast and left with her team of assistants that Sophia said to Tommy with certainty, "Behind greatness and beauty, there must be ulterior motives."
She knew Tommy’s true colors from the beginning; under the banner of technological equity, he frankly admitted upon their first meeting that the big players in the computer industry were building an ecosystem, but at that time, she had no idea what he meant, not until much later, when she accompanied this scoundrel to meet Delia, that she fully understood. All talk of technological equity and women’s employment was empty—his real aim was to take down Lotus and take its place.
So Sophia was sure that Tommy’s grand and pure-sounding words concealed other, sneakier thoughts.
"My thoughts aren’t small either, nor do they need hiding. Question, why, after establishing a media empire in Australia and England, did the Murdoch Group still aggressively take on loans, burdening themselves with debts of several billion dollars to break into America, trying to gain a foothold in the American media industry at the risk of making enemies of numerous newspaper magnates and the three major television networks, and why do they persist despite losing millions of US dollars every day on their American operations?" Tommy looked at Sophia with a smile and posed a question in response.
Sophia thought of several answers but dismissed them without speaking, eventually shaking her head.
"Alright, let’s try another question. In this magical land of America, what is the handiest weapon for politicians?" Tommy changed the question, seeing Sophia hem and haw and eventually shake her head.
Thinking of her companion’s arrangements for people like Tony, Susan, David, Dennis, and even Ottelia and Earl Rash, Sophia ventured slowly with each word,
"The emotions of the people."
