Chapter 74 - Equally Nuts

Darian took a deep breath. The strength of his Shadow Spirit and Light Spirit depended on two things.

First, the power of their mark — but both had the weakest kind, just mortal-level. Second, the black and white power he had given them to form their physical bodies.

In other words, if Darian gave them everything he had, they could become insanely strong — but he'd be left wide open. Ideally, he should just give them a decent amount of power and let them grow stronger on their own — but for that, they needed to evolve.

His master had taught him the basic properties of those two powers, which made up the core of spirits. Rhea had white power — the nemesis of the Risen — able to break through their defenses and purify their karma and power. One precise hit could open a gap.

His other ally, once that gap was open, could finish off any living being. Darian could also support them, attacking suddenly by bending the laws around them, and hiding both his allies' marks so they could appear out of nowhere.

Darian's offensive power — when he messed with the surrounding laws — changed a lot depending on where he was. Normally, it wasn't too flashy. But since he used all five natural laws at once and struck from every direction, not giving the enemy time to react, it had the potential to scare and force them on the defensive.

It was a combo that caught enemies off guard — and using these two allies this way cost Darian less energy than when he fought head-on before.

As long as Darian stayed alive, his spirits wouldn't die and could come back when he gave them power. Even if the enemy hit back hard, their bodies weren't real — just projections. So, destroying them didn't drain Darian's energy, but rebuilding their bodies obviously did.

Of course, that Risen wasn't all that strong — maybe around one or two rings of power.

Against other Spiritual Guardians with blessings and resources, they could survive the first strike. Then Darian would be in trouble. Meru had hammered that into him — pointing out all his flaws — to keep him from getting arrogant and acting like some Young Master.

"What the..." Niara muttered.

Darian nodded. "These are Ametheos and Rhea."

The two moved slightly toward Niara. Ametheos was the name Rhea gave the other ally — she thought it was weird that Darian hadn't named him and decided to step in.

Ametheos just stared at her with intense violet eyes. He couldn't talk, didn't have complex thoughts. He was literally reborn from scratch, with no memories or intelligence. But Meru said once his mark evolved, he'd start to change completely.

Rhea, on the other hand, was still the same. She looked Niara up and down, then noticed Darian's odd position on her body. She covered her mouth, chuckling softly, full of bad intentions.

Darian coughed, pretending not to get what she was thinking. Changing the subject, he said:

"Ametheos, wipe out everything on this planet."

"Roar!" he growled back, running off like he was super hyped.

For Rhea, this battle wouldn't give her anything. But for Ametheos, every enemy he beat made his mark absorb some of their black karma, boosting its power.

Darian didn't even need to devour them himself. If Ametheos beat them, a third of the karma went to him, and the rest flowed straight to Darian through a black thread.

As for Rhea, Darian knew the theory, but he still had to figure out exactly how to help her evolve.

"My Summoner... he was a canine Mannaz, kinda clumsy... I hope he's doing okay," Rhea said, sighing.

Darian nodded. He'd promised her he'd check up on her old Summoner and his son. They probably realized the contract had been broken when both died on Earth.

Stuff like that happened all the time — people in this universe were always taking on dangerous missions. That's why all the Summoners who lost their partners stayed at the Academy, became instructors, and helped in other areas with their experience.

"What happened here? Why were you in such bad shape?" Darian asked Niara, shifting from where he was and trying to sit on her shoulder.

Her hand moved fast, grabbed him, and shoved him even deeper into her clothes.

"This place is dangerous. We need to stay alert and ready." She said it flatly, though she found his reaction kinda funny inside.

He got comfy where he was with a sigh. Explosions echoed in the distance, and Darian could feel several black threads flowing toward him. That's when Niara started explaining what she knew about what was happening across the universe.

Rhea heard the first few words and her eyes widened.

"Wait?! You're the one who took down the Risen Lord?!"

Darian sighed. "Saying I took him down is a bit much. He gave his abyssal heart to a traitor and didn't show up in person. Luckily, I caught him off guard and destroyed it... at the cost of my own life."

Rhea took a deep breath. She already knew a bit about Darian's powers — she knew he could come back to life, as long as the mark in his soul stayed intact. Now it all made sense. That huge chunk of Merit Points he got could only mean he played a massive part in killing that enemy.

Niara puffed out her chest proudly as she stared at Rhea. Rhea, in turn, just gave a small smile.

Continuing the story, Niara told them what the Celestia Academy had discovered about the battle between the Risen Lords. Then she explained the possibility that they might try to take back the Divine Dragon Academy — but she didn't know many details for sure.

Around nine months ago, an order was given for all Mannaz across the universe to head to the front lines. At first, they were placed alongside the Spiritual Guardians and Summoners, getting trained and prepped to fight properly.

But in the last few days, all the Mannaz had been left on their own. They weren't fully ready — and it didn't really seem like a direct order from the Celestia Academy.

Those Spiritual Guardians who were supposed to leave in thirty days decided to go back early, to get ready ahead of time — while stuff on the market was still cheap. After all, once they returned to this universe and joined the big fight, everything would be ten times more expensive.

The Mannaz were being sent out in huge numbers to die. To the powerful ones, they were going to die either way. Giving them a slightly better chance to survive or not didn't matter.

As long as there were enough bodies to throw into the fire, the weaker Risen couldn't break through. Even that more powerful one — if he tried to leave the planet, a big formation would detect him, and thousands of Mannaz would swarm him, killing him by sheer exhaustion.

So, Niara, as the strongest non-Summoner Mannaz, went straight to the toughest front line. She made the Mannaz there fall back and take up safer positions on other planets, while she fought off the invaders alone until the end.

She knew she'd fall eventually, but she had bought some suicide items and planned to wipe out every enemy before that happened.

In the end, she said she was chasing the Leader Risen from that area when he used a spatial artifact — something that used to be common in this universe a long time ago.

Darian heard that and his mind lit up. Rhea knew what that artifact was, and even she had never seen one in this universe.

"The weak one opened the path... so the other one too..." he muttered, and Rhea immediately got it.

She flapped her wings and moved the sliced-up body of the powerful Risen...

Soon, she found a small stone among his guts. She picked it up and took it to Darian.

He took it excitedly — it was like a spatial ring, capable of storing stuff inside. When he checked the contents...

"Yes, there's another one of those artifacts in here, perfect!" he said, eyes full of ideas swirling in his head.

Rhea's eyes widened. "Wait, you're not thinking of—"

She stopped mid-sentence when she saw Niara's face — all hyped up, eyes sparkling. She instantly knew what Darian was planning, since she could feel what he felt.

"Oh, for heaven's sake..." Rhea sighed deeply, stunned. Those two were equally nuts and never stopped to think about the risks. But... now she was just their support, a sidekick to whatever they decided to do.

"The strong ones are probably gonna charge straight at the nearest galaxy, right?" Darian said, excited. "And the Risen will defend by moving their troops. So why don't we sneak in and steal all the good stuff?"
