Chapter 70 - Shadows Of Heaven

Lucy and Lucius were still just regular humans, so there were certain things they couldn't know. That's why Rhea had to stay hidden from them. But that was going to change in a few days.

That whole clan, now down to just five members, started eating like kings — surprised at how good Lucius was in the kitchen. Well, almost everyone. One shy girl ate quietly, almost indifferent.

Darian said that, even back when they had nothing and lived with their mom, Lucius was already a miracle worker in the kitchen. Now that he had access to everything? The sky was the limit.

The only problem was his weird taste. He cooked for everyone, sure, but he never really liked the food he made. In the end, he'd always cook something separate just for himself. It was always some strange and kinda sour dish — but he loved it.

When he sat down to eat, the peculiar smell slowly spread through the room. It was super spicy, sometimes really bitter — or both. Darian and Lucy had already given up trying to understand it, especially after throwing up a few times when they tried his food.

At that moment, Leander, Harper, and Matteo automatically turned to Veyle.

They saw her eyes light up when she caught a whiff of that smell.

"Oh? There really was someone as weird as her?" Matteo muttered.

Lucius looked confused and glanced at her, noticing the way she was staring at his plate.

Lucy giggled a little. "Well, well, come here..."

She excitedly pulled Veyle over and sat her down next to her brother, serving her the same dish.

Everyone watched as Veyle started eating — and then her eyes sparkled. It was the best thing she'd had in ages.

She was always strange... but now they'd found someone just like her.

Well, he was the brother of someone even weirder, so it kind of made sense. That's what everyone else thought at the same time.

The next day, a soldier came to visit Darian's house. He handed him several spatial rings.

"These contain all the artifacts and resources that were stored in the clan," he said politely, also handing over a glowing golden emblem. "This is the official emblem of an Imperial clan. With it, you can access places regular people can't, communicate with higher-ups, and more."

"Your clan is ranked C-D. Anytime missions of that level show up, the emblem will notify you. You can go to the altar, check all the details, and discuss with others which group should go. For anything else clan-related, just go to the main building and ask."

Darian nodded. "About the Divine Protection Universe... I've been away for several months..."

"Yes. The Empire can only send people on the day of the rookie test. You still have the right to go with that group," he replied calmly.

"And what about my siblings? They were under Rhea's care. Do they stay with us?"

The soldier nodded. "That wasn't tied to the clan, it was part of her recruiter work. If your clan has someone who wants to take on that role, the transfer can be done with no problem."

Darian thanked him, and the soldier left.

Everyone was waiting in the living room, so he repeated everything he'd heard.

"I want that job," Harper said right away. "I want to do what Miss Rhea did. I'll find talented young people in her place."

Everyone nodded, a little concerned. She wasn't soft and kind like Rhea — she was strict and demanding. A totally different approach... but thinking about it, the clan now needed people with that kind of firmness. Surviving her would be a perfect entrance test.

"Darian, do you want to lead the clan?" Leander asked seriously.

He looked at him and shook his head. "I think it'd take me centuries to learn everything, and I suck at bureaucracy... If I could, I'd rather focus on other stuff."

"Perfect. I know all the rules, and I grew up watching my mom and brother do this job. I was never really into going out on missions. I prefer spending time researching ways to use artifacts than improving my own power. That whole training universe thing, to me, was always about exploring life on other planets — not just training. So... why don't you let me handle this part?" Leander said casually.

Everyone listened, surprised. He was the team leader. If he wanted to take on the clan stuff completely, that meant he wouldn't be going on missions with them anymore.

"If that's really what you want... we'll need to find a new team leader," Darian muttered.

Then he glanced around at everyone who was staring back at him with strange expressions. "My leadership tends to lead us into kind of suicidal paths..."

He muttered it, and they just kept staring in silence. But deep down... wasn't that exactly what they'd already been doing?

He snorted. No point trying to run from it.

Then he pulled out a strange egg from his ring — it was almost half a meter long, green, and covered with small white and black markings. That was Oliver's treasure, which had been recovered.

It had been sealed by Rhea during this time, while she burned many pure resources to keep it alive, hoping that Darian would return to help.

Darian looked at the egg, then noticed everyone staring at him. He understood they wanted his help, but he was out of white power at the moment. So, he simply told them to burn all the clan's resources by buying pure Yang things to keep it alive. In a month, he would be back from the other universe.

When Leander and Rhea felt ready, everyone headed to the ruins of the clan. There, they held a small ceremony among themselves.

Damon was then released and lifted up by the laws, calmly. He had given it his all the entire time, and everything had moved for him to do what he did. Unfortunately, fate was cruel to those who failed. But the future still existed.

After saying their painful goodbyes, everyone took a deep breath. From now on, they'd focus only on what was ahead.

Days passed.

During that time, Lucius and Lucy were personally trained by Harper, Matteo, and Veyle. The two of them ended up being way more into combat training than Darian ever was.

Harper was sure when she said: "These two could easily become Mystics or Fighters. They're fast, have great reflexes for battle, and on top of that, they can think strategically and clearly in the middle of a fight. Total rough diamonds."

In the end, it would all depend on their blessing and law.

But they weren't just regular awakened people — they were Ancients. Technically, they already had a law inside their souls and the foundation of what would become their blessing.

The problem was, they didn't have spiritual veins yet to let that power flow. That would only awaken once they entered the other universe for the first time. Darian was an exception, so he didn't count.

As for their blessing, unlike regular folks, they'd already have a base in place once they got there. According to the few awakened like them, there were two possibilities:

They could look for a blessing that was close to the base they already had — though that kind of blessing might not even exist. Regulars had dozens of blessings to choose from because they only had a law, but Ancients already came with a base, and finding something similar to it wasn't guaranteed.

The second option, obviously, was to create something from scratch. But since they already had a solid foundation, it wouldn't be that crazy difficult like it would be for someone normal.

About their test — both of them were asked, and they wanted to take it alongside the regular awakened, just like Darian had done. They had the option to skip it entirely, but they wanted to prove themselves.

Darian asked Leander about it, and unlike him — whose ancient nature no one had known about — the two of them would get a clear objective: just survive for one hour in that place...

When they heard that, the twins' eyes widened.

"Wait, survive? Me and Lucius were about to make a bet to see who'd kill more," Lucy said, suspicious.

"Kill Risen while you're just a soul? That's impossible. Nobody during the test can even take one direct hit from them. You two, with no blessing, no weapons, no experience? You'll be down in seconds," Leander replied without hesitation.

During this time, Lucy kept asking him tons of questions, all excited. And he taught her about artifacts and anything else she wanted to know. Leander was actually thrilled — Lucy got everything he explained right away and even asked super smart questions he'd never thought about. It was nice having someone sharp to talk to and teach.

As soon as he finished explaining, the twins turned to Darian in sync.

Yeah, he had mentioned, kind of casually, that he killed a bunch of enemies during the test and that it was pretty dangerous.

Seeing the "Challenge accepted" look on both their faces, Darian started sweating. They were definitely going to try and kill Risen without hesitation — and that was on him, for talking too much.

Not long after, Harper was officially made a recruiter for the Empire. So she became responsible for the twins, who would stay in the clan after they came back.

Leander was also registered as the new clan leader. The name changed: now it was called the Shadows of Heaven clan.

It was a unanimous decision from Rhea and the others. The name came from Darian's power — which seemed to create either holy or cursed shadows. Since they were all going to follow the same path beside him, it was a fitting choice.

On the scheduled day, Darian, Lucy, Lucius, and the rest of the clan got permission and requested a plane. They flew off toward that island in the middle of the ocean.

When they landed, an instructor took the two new recruits for the intro.

Everyone else stayed outside the building. A few minutes later, hundreds of High Humans started arriving on the island and waited.

Everyone recognized Darian — he had gotten pretty famous in the Empire.

But since everyone there was low-level, no one approached him. Nayara was among them and was the only one who came over, still with a heavy expression.

Unfortunately, they couldn't tell her that Rhea was still with them.

After all the recruits were taken inside, the thousands of people on the island moved toward the altar. The process to enter was simple: you walked into the cluster of light, your mind went black, and you got pulled in.

Darian moved forward, super anxious. He was seriously worried about Niara. It always surprised him — he found himself thinking about her constantly.

The two of them had a lot in common, and Meru had even said she'd been chosen to complete him. Their time together had been short, but they'd formed a real bond easily — that was the biggest proof.

Now, he was going back.
