Chapter 92: Chapter 92: Negotiation

Southern Palace

Klaus decided to return to the North after his interview with the King of the South, if all went well. Emily’s successive encounters had made him dislike the city, and it was necessary for him to complete the mission his father had given him as soon as possible, and to leave this hellish place forever with Emily.

Klaus sat in the king’s drawing room. He glanced up at his watch. Ten minutes had passed. Why hadn’t King James come?

Klaus tapped his fingers impatiently on the armrest of his chair, his patience wearing thin as the minutes ticked by.

At that moment, the door to the room opened, and a white figure entered slowly. Klaus frowned when he saw that it was Prince Adam, and not King James.

"Nice to meet you, Alpha Klaus." Dressed in a light blue coat and wearing a royal gold badge on his chest, Prince Adam politely shook Klaus’s hand.

"I’ll be meeting with you today."

"If I’m not mistaken, I made an appointment to meet King James." Klaus showed his displeasure by shaking hands with deliberately increased force.

"My father is ill, so he sent me to interview you." Prince Adam withdrew his hand and smiled slightly, "Prince to Prince."

"Good." Klaus, too, had no time to lose, and after taking his seat, he outlined directly to Prince Adam the plan by which the North and South were to attack the West together.

As Klaus recounted his plans for an attack on the West, Prince Adam expressed no opinion, his body always in a listening posture, with occasional expressions of contemplation. Prince Adam asked Klaus a question at the end of his speech.

"When the North and the South signed an alliance agreement, we sent a bride to marry you as a sign of goodwill." Prince Adam paused at the mention of the word "bride," then continued, "But why are you breaking the treaty of alliance?"

"I don’t understand what you’re talking about." Klaus asked, puzzled.

"Let me be clearer." Prince Adam looked directly at Klaus, "Our people discovered some spies from the North some time ago, and these people have been in frequent contact with your Beta since you came to the South. So, I doubt the sincerity of the North-South alliance. You’ve been attacked by the West, so you want to use the power of the South against the West, but are you going to turn the wolf’s paw on the South?"

Klaus’s face darkened, and he did not expect that the people of the southern duchy would so quickly discover the identity of the Northern spy. That’s when he remembered Mark’s warning to him. If it hadn’t been for the investigation into the death of Emily’s mother, perhaps he would not have so easily mobilized the spies.

"It looks like your people are also keeping an eye on me, otherwise how could you have discovered those spies in such a short period of time?" Klaus lit his cigarette as if no one was around, and he took a deep breath, "And what do you intend to do with those people?"

The corners of Prince Adam’s mouth curled up slightly, and he said in an indifferent tone, "If you give me all the information that your spies have gathered in the south, I will consider releasing some of them back to the north."

"That’s all?" Klaus raised an eyebrow, and a puff of white smoke escaped his mouth. "And what about the plan to attack the West?"

"Our king is sincere in his alliance with you, and he does not wish the relations between our two countries to be too strained. As long as you withdraw all your remaining spies from the South, he will not hold you accountable." Prince Adam paused for a few seconds before continuing, "As for the plan to jointly attack the West, I don’t think it’s appropriate to declare war on the West at this time. After all, our two countries are in a state of truce, and if we rashly attack the West, it will deal a blow to the economies of both the North and the South."

"So you don’t agree to unite the North against the West?" Klaus pinched his cigarette between his fingers and scrutinized Prince Adam. "Is this your decision or your father’s decision?"

"I represent my father," Prince Adam said in a serious tone. "My decision is his."

"According to the alliance treaty, if one side of the alliance is threatened by a third country, the allied state, as the other party, must send troops to support. That’s what the alliance is all about." Klaus emphasized, "If one party fails to comply with the treaty, it will be considered a renunciation."

"And how do you explain the spies you planted in the South?" Prince Adam asked rhetorically, trying to gain the upper hand and make Klaus back down.

"It’s simple. I admit that those spies were planted in the South years ago, but don’t tell me that you never planted spies in the North," Klaus said. "It’s better to dismantle all those spy networks. And I don’t want those people around. You can deal with them as you see fit."

"Are you sure?" Prince Adam looked suspiciously at Klaus.

"Of course," Klaus replied simply. "However, you must abide by the treaty of alliance and send troops to unite the north to attack the west. We will not change our mind about attacking the West, and if you do not agree to attack the West, then we will automatically dissolve the alliance."

Klaus pressed his cigarette directly onto the glass coffee table to extinguish it, stood up, and said to Prince Adam, "It was a pleasure meeting you. Goodbye."

"Wait," Prince Adam stopped Klaus. "I will tell my father what you’ve said, and perhaps we can talk again at a later date when he is feeling better."

"I’m sorry," Klaus said in a cold tone. "Our visit to the South has ended, and I plan to return to the North tomorrow. And as you said just now, your decision is your father’s decision. I don’t think there’s any need to talk to him anymore."

Klaus turned to leave, and Prince Adam watched him go, caught in a state of conflict.

Prince Adam left the study and went straight to the door of the king’s chamber. He made his intentions clear to the steward, and with the king’s permission, Prince Adam entered the king’s bedroom.

King James was sitting on the bed in his crimson dressing-gown, and a maid was carrying pills and handing them to him. King James glanced up at Prince Adam as he took the pill.

"What’s the matter?" King James asked.

"The North insists that we cooperate with them in attacking the West, and Alpha Klaus doesn’t care about the lives of those spies. He’s given us carte blanche to do with them as we please. He also said that if we don’t send troops to attack the West, we will break the Covenant."

King James said in a calm tone, "It seems that this Alpha Klaus is forcing us to send troops to attack the West."

"Alpha Klaus is planning to leave the South tomorrow. So, what should we do?"

"Has the wolf king of the West arrived yet?" King James asked.

Prince Adam nodded, "He was already in the south yesterday."

"Then let’s see what benefits the West can offer us before making a decision. As for Alpha Klaus...," King James thought for a moment and said, "Just let him stay in the South for a few more days."

"I’ll do as you say."

"Also, I want you to go see Emily and ask her out. I need to talk to her." King James instructed Prince Adam, "But you mustn’t let her know that I intend to see her."

"Why do you want to see Emily?" Prince Adam asked, puzzled.

King James was silent for a moment, then said, "Because she could be my daughter."
