Chapter 63: Chapter 63 Be Careful

For the next week, Emily had to study almost every day, and the royal advisor devised a study plan for her, which he titled the "Princess’s Exclusive Curriculum." Not only did she need to master formal court etiquette, but she also had to learn about the traditional culture of the north. Additionally, royal advisers even arranged cooking and flower arrangement classes for her.

Although some of the classes were tedious, Emily worked diligently. She knew that she possessed many flaws, which she couldn’t ignore if she wanted to become a worthy princess.

Klaus was equally occupied. He left for work every morning before Emily was awake, and the King had already signed the paperwork for the transfer of the pack. Although he had regained his old pack, there were still numerous details to attend to.

However, Emily had received some good news from Klaus: the woman, Heidi, had been hired as a maid in the palace. Since Emily had been preoccupied with her studies, she hadn’t found a suitable opportunity to meet Heidi yet. It was only one day, as she was strolling through the garden, that she heard a soft voice amidst the flowers.

"Your Highness."

Emily halted and peered into the flowerbed, where a woman with a ponytail and a black-and-white maid’s uniform peeked out from among the white roses.

"Heidi?" Emily recognized the woman before her as the one who had been injured in the accident that day, and a smile spread across her face, accompanied by a warm feeling in her heart.

"Your Highness, it’s a pleasure to meet you again," Heidi respectfully greeted Emily. "Thank you so much for your help. Not only did you save me, but you also got me a job at the palace."

"You’re welcome," Emily smiled at Heidi and asked with concern, "Are your injuries healed?"

"Thanks to you, my injuries are almost healed," Heidi said.

"Did they assign you to work in the garden?" Emily glanced at the scissors in Heidi’s hand and the mud-stained apron she wore. She asked curiously, "Are you the only one working here?" 𝐟𝗿𝐞𝚎𝚠𝐞𝚋𝕟𝐨𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝕔𝕠𝚖

"There are two other girls who work with me, but they’re taking their break now," Heidi replied, deliberately lowering her head. Her embarrassed expression caught Emily’s attention.

"It’s not mealtime yet. Why did they go to eat first and leave you here to work?" Emily looked around but didn’t see the other maids.

"Your Highness, I have to get back to work," Heidi said, looking up with a hint of helplessness in her eyes. "I have to finish everything before they return. If I don’t, not only will I be scolded, but they won’t even give me dinner."

"Who are they?" Emily asked.

"Your Highness, I can’t talk to you much longer," Heidi hurriedly ended the conversation. "You’ve already helped me so much. Please don’t worry about me anymore. I’ll always remember your kindness."

"Heidi," Emily tried to stop her, but the woman vanished into the flowers as if she hadn’t heard her.

Then, the other maid who had been following Emily reminded her that it was nearly time for the history lesson, and that the teacher conducting it was a stern man who did not tolerate tardiness from his students.

Emily had no choice but to hurry and get to class first, deciding that she would wait until it was over before questioning Heidi and that she would not stand idly by while the poor woman was bullied by the other maids.

After finishing her lessons for the day, Emily retreated to her room, needing some time to digest the mundane knowledge. Since Klaus would not be back for dinner that night, she wouldn’t have to go to the dining room, and the maid would bring her meal to her room.

The heat dampened Emily’s appetite, and she only ate a small vegetable salad amidst the food on the table.

"Is it that these meals are not to your liking?" an older maid serving Emily’s meal asked with concern. "Would you like me to ask the chef to prepare you something else?"

"No need, thank you," Emily said, setting down her fork. "I’d like to have the dessert that’s been chilled."

"The dessert for dinner today is orange jelly," the old maid replied. "I’ll have them bring it to you right away."

Shortly, the dessert was brought to the table by one of the maids, who lifted the silver lid to reveal a jelly made from fresh oranges, looking particularly inviting.

Emily picked up the small silver spoon, her slender fingers wrapping gently around the cold metal, just as she was about to taste the orange jelly, an eager woman’s voice outside the door broke the silence of the dining area.

"Your Highness, Your Highness." There was a hint of anxiety and entreaty in his voice.

Emily and the old maid looked out the door simultaneously, only to see a woman halted by the guards. Emily dropped the spoon in her hand, stood up, and walked out of the door, her mind clouded with doubt.

"Heidi, why are you here?" Emily asked, surprised.

"Your Highness, that orange jelly..." Heidi tried to push past the guards, but the two tall guards held her back, their bodies rigid and eyes filled with caution.

"Who do you think you are, shouting like that here?" The old maid scolded Heidi, her voice tinged with disdain and anger. "Guards, throw this woman out."

"Wait," Emily said. "Let her come in."

"Your Highness, you can’t let this woman near you. If she hurts you, Alpha will surely blame us." The old maid remonstrated with Emily, her tone firm.

Emily ignored the old maid’s words and directly ordered the guards, "Bring her in."

Presently, the guards ushered Heidi into the room. Instead of leaving, they stood by Emily’s side for her safety.

"Are you here for me, Heidi?" Emily asked, her gaze soft and intense.

"Your Royal Highness, I’ve come to you to tell you about the orange jelly..." Heidi looked nervous, as if she were concealing an important secret.

"Someone poisoned your dessert," Heidi blurted out.

"Your Highness, this woman is lying." The old maid looked flustered, and her evasive demeanor made Emily suspicious.

"We will soon find out the truth," Emily said, her eyes fixed on the old maid.
