Chapter 29: Chapter 29 I Know Your Preoccupations

Emily had a dream where she returned to her own village. In the dream, after finishing her farm work, Mrs. Bauer would stand outside the barn with a plate of snacks, kindly waving to Emily and saying, "Come on, Emily, I made your favorite lemon pie."

As Emily laid down her farm implements and started toward Mrs. Bauer, her figure faded into obscurity as she ran, and eventually, the dream died away. But the scent of lemon pie lingered in the air.

"Oh, Mrs. Bauer," Emily said, half-asleep, "I miss your lemon pie so much."

"Emily, wake up," Klaus’s voice rang in her ears. "Look what this is."

Emily opened her eyes in a daze and saw Klaus holding a round silver dish in his hand. She sniffed greedily at the smell of lemon mixed with butter.

"Is this a lemon pie?" Emily immediately sat up, staring at the plate in Klaus’s hand. "Oh, it’s lemon pie."

"Is this for me?" Emily could hardly believe it.

"Of course, it’s for you," Klaus said, stroking her head lovingly. "I guess you must like lemon pie."

"How do you know I like lemon pie the most?" Emily’s eyes were fixed on the fragrant lemon tart. She had eaten nothing since last night’s strenuous exercise with Klaus, and now her stomach was protesting with a loud growl.

"Can I taste it now?" Emily asked eagerly.

"Of course," Klaus replied.

"In bed?" Emily asked tentatively.

"Why not?" Klaus agreed.

Having obtained Klaus’s consent, Emily took a slice of lemon pie and ate it, munching with a look of natural satisfaction.

"How does it taste?" Klaus asked.

"Very good," Emily complimented. "But Mrs. Bauer’s craftsmanship is a little better than this."

"Did you make this?" Emily asked curiously as he rose, without even noticing.

"I asked the Imperial Chef to make it for you," Klaus said.

Emily glanced out of the window; the sky was shining, and the sun should have just risen above the horizon.

"The palace chef made a lemon pie so early?" she asked in surprise.

"They usually get up early to work," Klaus explained.

Klaus deliberately withheld certain facts from Emily. He didn’t tell her that he had actually called the palace kitchen in the middle of the night and ordered them to have the lemon pie ready and delivered before dawn. The poor court cook had worked diligently to make the lemon pie, then taken a speedboat to Klaus’s place to deliver it. Emily, of course, knew nothing of this, for she was sound asleep at the time.

"How do you know I like lemon pie?" she asked again.

"I just know," Klaus replied with a smile.

Emily watched Klaus’s confident demeanor and thought to herself that it was probably just a coincidence. How could he really guess what she liked? But, grateful for him preparing her breakfast, Emily left Klaus the last slice of lemon pie as a token of her appreciation.

"You can try this lemon pie too," Emily said, handing the last slice to Klaus.

"I’m not in the habit of eating breakfast," Klaus shook his head. "Eat more if you like it."

"You never eat breakfast?" Emily asked curiously.

"It’s a habit I developed since I joined the army. Sometimes you need to do urgent tasks, and eating breakfast is a waste of time," Klaus explained.

"How can you have the strength to work without breakfast?" Emily wondered.

"Did you used to work a lot?" Klaus asked.

"Yes, I used to do farm work every day when I was in the country," Emily replied, taking a bite of the lemon pie. "Sometimes I help Mrs. Bauer take care of her children."

"Farm work must have been hard for you every day, right?" Klaus’s tone was full of curiosity about Emily’s past. While the report described in detail all that had happened to her in the South, he wanted to know more about her.

"It’s hard to work on the farm, but at least I’m free," Emily’s tone unconsciously lowered, and she didn’t continue eating the lemon pie in her hand.

"You’re free here too," Klaus sensed her mood change and reassured her. "You can go wherever you want."

"But there’s nowhere I want to go," Emily said, placing the remainder of the lemon pie back on her plate and casting her sombre gaze out the window.

"Have you ever skied in the snow in the winter?" Klaus asked.

Emily shook her head. "I’ve never seen snow before. It’s rare to see snow in the south."

"Then you must go skiing in the small town of Filth in the winter. It’s also great to soak in the hot springs there," Klaus described vividly. "The mountains on the border are full of maple trees, and when autumn comes, the whole mountain looks fiery red. In the spring, you’ll see the Veros Estate in full bloom with roses of all colours, the most beautiful of which is the blue. In the summer, you can see not only whales but also pink dolphins."

"Pink dolphins?" Emily was intrigued. "I’ve never seen a pink dolphin before."

"See, there’s a lot more to explore in the north," Klaus said, looking deeply at Emily with his green eyes. "There are still people who deserve your love."

Emily blushed. "That’s what that person won’t say, right?"

"Isn’t it me? Is it someone else?" Klaus embraced Emily into his arms. "No one can have you but me."

"But I also miss my friends," Emily whispered. "I don’t even have a friend here."

"I’ll fix that," Klaus whispered back. "I won’t let you feel lonely here."

At that moment, Klaus’s cell phone rang. When he picked it up and saw the caller’s number, he couldn’t help but frown. After a few seconds, he let go of Emily and went to the window to answer it.

"Speak," Klaus lowered his voice.

After a few minutes, Klaus hung up and turned to Emily. "The king is summoning us," he said. 𝘧𝓇𝑒𝑒𝑤ℯ𝑏𝓃𝘰𝑣ℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮

"What?" Emily was surprised. "You mean the king is summoning me and you?"

"Yes," Klaus said. "We’re ready to sail back, and the King’s men are already waiting for us at the docks."

The King of the North, the ruthless man who forced his son to watch his mother’s execution? Emily’s heart shuddered at the thought.
