Chapter 206: Chapter 206 Father

" You were once sent north by your adoptive father to marry an Alpha, and then your pack suffered a massacre." Adam said slowly, " I’m sure Dolly told you about what happened to your pack. Now the royal house of the North has declared that your husband was killed in battle, so that you are now practically a widow. But never mind, soon papa will have your marriage annulled. At that time you will return to being single."

It turned out that her husband had been killed in the war. Emily’s eyes fell, and a complex emotion surged suddenly through her. She was unable to explain what it felt like; It was neither heartache nor sorrow. It was that faint, unaccountable sadness.

" Don’t think about what happened before." Adam said, " You’ve been through so much suffering before, it’s time to start a new life."

Emily said nothing more, her eyes misting a little as she looked ahead. Her thoughts seemed to drift with her gaze, to a past she did not know, and to a future that was full of hope and a little confused.

The breeze lightly brushed Emily’s face, and a few strands of hair fluttered about her cheeks. Standing beside her, Adam reached up and lifted her disheveled hair behind her ears. He looked at Emily with the same intense love that his brother had shown. They looked at each other and smiled in the warm sunlight.

........

After dinner Adam led Emily towards the king’s chamber. The corridors of the palace looked deep and mysterious in the light, and Emily’s step faltered a little, and every step carried with it a sense of uneasiness. She knew that she was about to see her father, but her mind was so blank that she had no idea who he was, and the strangeness of the situation made her heart beat fast.

The door to the bedchamber was slowly pushed open, and the smell of medicine came to her nose. King James was lying on his bed, his face a little pale and thin with disease, and the mingled marks of age and disease had carved lines of vicissitude across it. However, when his gaze fell upon Emily, a gleam of excitement mingled with compassion instantly shone in his eyes.

"Emily, my child." King James’s voice carried a hint of trepidation, of suppressed emotion. He tried to sit up, but the weakness of his body left him somewhat weak.

Emily stood beside the bed, her eyes full of confusion and constraint. She looked at the man she called her father before her, and there was no expected surge of affection in her heart, only endless strangeness. She bit her lip a little, not knowing how to respond to this passion.

The king put out his hand to touch Emily, and it trembled slightly in the air, full of longing. "Come here, Emily." His voice was a little husky.

Emily hesitated, but slowly passed her hand across. The king took her hand, and it was warm and rough, and yet Emily was a little overwhelmed. She looked at the King, and there was no familiar intimacy in her eyes, only polite perplexity.

King James sensed Emily’s strangeness, and there was a twinkle of pain in his eyes, but it was quickly replaced by compassion. "It’s okay, as long as you’re back." he said gently, trying to lighten the somewhat awkward atmosphere.

King James took Emily’s hand in his and rubbed it, his eyes filled with pain. "Emily, it’s okay that you don’t remember me. I know you’ve been through so much."

Emily frowned a little as she tried to search her mind for the memory of her father before her, but nothing came. The blankness frightened her a little. She looked at the king and her lips moved, but she did not know what to say.

At this moment the king coughed violently, and his whole frame shook. Emily unconsciously reached out to help, a flicker of panic in her eyes. The king smiled bitterly as he slowed down.

" I’m old and don’t have much time left." The king’s voice was hoarse and weak, " I’m sorry that as your real father, I didn’t even fulfill my duty as a father. How I want to make up for what I owe you, but..."

The king’s words ended abruptly, and the light dimmed a little in his eyes, a despair of the past that could not be mended.

" It’s okay." Emily gently reassured the king, as she reached out her other hand and gently covered it in an attempt to convey some comfort.

"You really do look like your mother. " The King’s eyes rippled a little, a memory of the past.

"Can you tell me something about my mother? " Emily asked softly.

"Of course. " The king flashed a smile, "Come, sit next to me." 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚

Emily sat down in the chair beside the bed. She looked at the king with a mixture of anticipation and curiosity in her eyes. Then the husky but heartfelt voice of the king rang through the room. His eyes grew distant, as if he had passed through the mists of time, back to the moment when he had met Emily’s mother.

Emily listened quietly to the story of the king, and a little time passed. It was not until the king grew tired of talking that the story ended.

So Emily waited till the king was asleep, and then she slowly withdrew from the room. Adam escorted Emily to her room, and they walked slowly down the palace corridor. The dim light on the walls reflected their long and short silhouettes.

Suddenly Emily felt a sharp pain in her abdomen. She stopped immediately and covered her stomach with one hand. Slowly a warm stream flowed from between her legs.

Adam hurriedly turned around to support Emily as he asked with concern, " Emily, are you okay?"

Before Emily could answer, he saw the blood running from between her legs, forming a small, shocking red stain on the ground.

Just then Dolly happened to pass by. Her face, too, grew grave at the sight, and she stepped forward at once to assist.

"Take her back to her room. " Dolly said hurriedly.

Without the least hesitation, Adam picked Emily up in his arms and ran to her room. Emily lay in Adam’s arms, her face as white as paper, her body trembling slightly with pain, her eyes betraying alarm and helplessness.

Once back in the room, Adam gently placed Emily on the bed before turning around and yelling towards the guards outside, "Call a doctor!"

Dolly stayed in the room, she held Emily’s hand tightly and whispered soothingly, "Emily, don’t be afraid, the doctor will be here soon."

Emily clutched the sheets and fought back the pain. Her eyes were full of bewilderment and terror. She did not know what was wrong with her.
