Chapter 62: Chapter 62

Lily

I was yet to get used to the fact that Kai was my second chance mate.

I mean, he was an Alpha, hot, sexy, desirable, could have any woman he wanted in the world and yet, the Moon Goddess – from all the thousand women available that he could have given him... she gave him me.

And talk about obsession.

It seems I’ve known him for years now instead of a few weeks. He always wanted to be near me. We’ve gone on several dates, he’d make time for me, refusing to take his Beta Liam’s call or anyone else’s. Whenever we were alone, he’d give me his full attention, undivided.

No matter how much I tried to fight the attraction to him that was growing every day, I just couldn’t do it because he was always trying to make me laugh. This afternoon, I was sitting in my favourite coffee shop, absently stirring my latte, still thinking about Kai.

“Second chance mate,” I whispered to myself with a smile. The words still felt foreign to me... but it felt like it was compensation from the moon goddess after losing Lucas. But Kai hadn’t lost anyone and he was engaged to Briella.

I frowned at the thought of Briella again, wondering how long before I could openly be with Kai.

Suddenly, my phone on the coffee table buzzed, pulling me out of my reverie. When I checked it, there was a message from Kai.

“Look outside”

I turned toward the window to see him standing there, holding what appeared to be a rubber chicken. The hair at the back of my neck rose as I turned back to the café, staring at everyone, hoping no one had noticed that their Alpha.

He rapped on the window again, calling my attention. Rolling my eyes, I turned to him again, bracing myself for the worst.

He began to perform an exaggerated mime routine with it, drawing strange looks from passersby. He didn’t even care. He had no disguise on... I buried my face in my hand feeling embarrassed and amused at the sight of the powerful, Alpha Kai, making a complete fool of himself just to make me smile.

He had shown up at the training ground this morning despite all my pleas for him not to always show up.

I stood at the edge of the training ground trying to do some stretching exercises before the session started. It was barely dawn and the first light was just breaking over the mountains. I’d come here to get a head start on today’s training.

When it was time to find a sparring partner, I watched with horror as Kai walked towards me. From the corner of my eyes, I saw Jake – our training instructor smirk and I knew that we were already giving people ideas.

Forcing myself to breathe evenly and look less guilty, I waited for him to come closer to me. He stopped a few paces from me, running a hand through his hair. “Good morning,” he greeted with an awkward voice.

“Morning,” I replied for the sake of the people watching us. “Are you just passing by or just here to make sure I don’t disappear?”

“I’m sorry,” he sighed. “I missed you so much, I couldn’t stop thinking about you. I had to come. I’m sorry.”

I exhaled sharply, trying not to let the frustration building slowly inside me to spiral out of control.

“You saw me yesterday, Kai. We spent the entire day together, I thought we agreed that you’d stop showing up here every morning. It’s getting suspicious.”

“They’re just 14-year-olds or less, I’m sure they have other things to gossip about besides, you can’t spar with any of them.”

“Jake already agreed to be my partner. I’m tired of you showing up here all the time. It’s driving me crazy. You’re driving me crazy.”

His mouth curved into a sheepish smile as he shrugged. “The feeling is mutual, Lily and I’m sorry for showing up here but I can’t help it. You’re my mate and I always want to be with you but I’m going to do better in the future, I promise.”

The way he was earnestly swearing, you’d think I’d just caught him stealing candies. I tightened my lips and fought back a smile. It was strange to see him like this - a powerful Alpha who could order anyone to do his bidding, yet here he was, fumbling for words.

I wasn’t used to seeing him like this, so vulnerable, like a lovesick puppy and something about it softened my resolve.

“Fine,” I sighed. “Last chance, after today, you can’t come here again. I know this is new to us but I also need you to give me space. I need my time.”

His expression darkened for a second, but he nodded. “Right, space. I can do that. I mean, I’ll try to do that.”

When he finally came inside, his face was slightly flushed but he wore a triumphant grin.

“I knew I could get you to laugh.”

“What on earth was that?” I asked, still giggling.

“I bought it from a street vendor,” he said sitting down across from me and placing the rubber chicken on the table. “I’ve named him Kai – after me.”

I shook my head, still grasping this side of him. “You’re ridiculous, Kai. We saw each other a few hours ago. How did you even know I was here? And you do realize we’re in the public? We promised to keep everything under wraps.”

“Don’t worry, most people here don’t even know I’m the Alpha without my ceremonial attire and I came because I was worried that I offended you this morning. I’m sorry.”

“And my anger was justified. You tried to kiss me in front of those kids... what were you thinking?”

He lowered his gaze. “I couldn’t resist you,” he sighed. “These days, I’m barely surviving as it is.”

“As if...” I glared at him “And there’s no need to have you promise me. You’ve managed to break all of your promises.”

“So,” he gave me a playing wink. “You’ve forgiven me?”

I stirred my Latte, making a big production of not replying to him, and took a sip first before I set the cup down again.

“Because of the effort, I forgive you. Just don’t pull that stunt again.”

He reached for my hand on the table stroking it warmly. “Have dinner with me tonight,” he said suddenly.
