After I Fully Prepared for the Apocalypse, the Ungrateful Cried with Regret-Chapter 81: Her Safe House
Two days had passed since they returned to the old house from the shelter.
For the past two days, Nina Jacobs had gone out with Wayne Warner every day. The two fought side-by-side, killing a good number of zombies.
Just then, Nina Jacobs pulled Wayne Warner into a house by the side of the road.
This was a brick house—one of Nina Jacobs’s safe houses.
A moment ago, while they were killing zombies, Nina Jacobs had forgotten there was a subway entrance nearby.
A large number of zombies seemed to be gathered inside the subway entrance, and the two of them had drawn them all out.
They had clearly run for seven or eight blocks, but several hundred zombies were still in hot pursuit.
At the critical moment, Nina Jacobs summoned the system’s safe house and pulled Wayne Warner inside.
Wayne Warner didn’t seem to find any of it strange.
Outside the safe house, zombies ran past one after another, but none of them noticed the two people inside.
"Let’s rest for a bit. We’ve been at it for most of the day."
Nina Jacobs had already placed a table and chairs inside the safe house.
"Are you hungry?"
Nina Jacobs glanced at the time. It was almost lunch.
"Yeah."
Wayne Warner looked at Nina Jacobs’s backpack.
"..."
Over the past two days, Nina Jacobs hadn’t dared to let Wayne Warner miss a single meal.
Every time mealtime came around, she was the one who pulled all sorts of food from her backpack.
This time was no exception. Nina Jacobs took out three large containers of fried noodles for Wayne Warner, along with various side dishes and a yogurt she had packed beforehand.
The roars of the zombies outside could still be heard, yet the two of them began to eat lunch inside the house.
Wayne Warner seemed completely unfazed by it.
From their interactions over the past few days, Nina Jacobs had learned that Wayne Warner only reacted to zombies, food, and her words. He wouldn’t spare a second glance for any other change in his surroundings.
He didn’t even seem to register the strangeness of her pulling steaming hot food out of a backpack.
Wayne Warner’s eyes simply lit up as he started to eat.
"Do you want more?"
By the time Wayne Warner had finished three containers of fried noodles, Nina Jacobs had only eaten half of hers. 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂
She considered herself to have a decent appetite, but Wayne Warner made her look like she ate like a bird.
"Yes."
Wayne Warner nodded.
"..."
So, Nina Jacobs took out two more large containers of dumplings and placed them in front of him.
"Slow down. We’re not in a hurry."
After a few more bites of her fried noodles, Nina Jacobs started drinking her yogurt.
She was genuinely worried Wayne Warner would choke.
His only response was to continue eating in silence.
"We’ll rest here for a little while longer, then we’ll get the car and leave. There are too many zombies around here, so we have to take it slow."
Nina Jacobs didn’t expect Wayne Warner to understand what she was saying.
She just thought it was nice to have someone around to listen to her ramble.
"Okay."
Wayne Warner only spoke after he’d swallowed the last dumpling.
"..."
The two rested in the safe house for a little while.
They only came out when the number of zombies outside had dwindled to almost none.
Her car was parked nearby, and the system’s map had plotted the shortest walking route.
Of course, they ran.
Nina Jacobs was worried the zombies might turn back.
Soon, she saw her car in the distance.
They were behind a neighborhood supermarket, where they had already killed all the zombies.
But there were several people gathered around their car.
It was three men and two women. They seemed to have just discovered her car and were leaning on the windows, peering inside.
"What are you doing?"
The appearance of Nina Jacobs and her companion took the group by surprise.
But they quickly recovered.
"Is this your car?"
A burly, shirtless man wearing only a leather jacket asked.
Leather jackets offered good protection against zombie scratches and bites, making them excellent defensive gear in the apocalypse.
It was just too hot for it now.
Nina Jacobs was still dressed in durable, breathable cargo pants and a form-fitting, breathable athletic shirt.
Even though she was covered up in long sleeves and pants, her youthful face and slender figure made the man in the leather jacket give a lecherous smile.
"It’s my car."
Nina Jacobs frowned.
These people had no intention of moving.
"Hehehe, beautiful. You know who we are? Wanna join us?"
The man in the leather jacket’s expression had changed completely, and he was now grinning as he sized Nina Jacobs up and down.
"I’m not interested," Nina Jacobs said coldly. "Get away from my car."
"Why no interest? You’ll be interested once you get to know us."
The man in the short-sleeved shirt next to him whistled at Nina Jacobs.
’The big guy behind her looks strong, but there are only two of them. Plus, he’s not reacting at all, no matter how crude we are. He must be a total wimp.’
"We’re from the Superpower User Alliance. You’re a Superpower User too, right? You should consider joining up and coming with us."
One of the women, who had long hair and looked to be in her thirties, seemed accustomed to her companions’ behavior.
She looked at Nina Jacobs with suspicion and continued:
"Since your car is here, that proves you got here a while ago. Did you take everything from the neighborhood supermarket? Are you a Space Superpower User?"
"It was already empty when I got here, and I’m not a Space Superpower User."
Nina Jacobs replied, her expression unchanging.
She had, in fact, cleared out the neighborhood supermarket three hours ago.
She had parked her car here because she judged the area to be relatively safe.
She hadn’t expected this group to notice this spot too.
Then again, it wasn’t that surprising. The so-called "recruiters" they had met near Ardmore University a few days ago had mentioned it.
The Superpower User Alliance’s headquarters was in the nearby Breslin Park.
"Bullshit. One of you two has to be a Space Superpower User."
The man in the leather jacket grew angry just thinking about it.
They had struggled to find their way here and had even lost a few Superpower Users along the way.
And the neighborhood supermarket was empty?
After all, there weren’t many stores in the suburbs of City D to begin with.
"If you don’t move, don’t blame me for what happens next."
Nina Jacobs didn’t want to waste time talking to them. A Fireball was already blazing in her hand.
"So you really are a Superpower User."
The group exchanged glances, their eyes filled with wariness.
"This should be fun. Let’s see which of us is stronger."
Seeing this, one of the men who hadn’t spoken yet also conjured a Fireball in his palm.
"Alright, then."
Nina Jacobs’s interest was piqued.
For days, she had only been fighting zombies.
She had yet to fight a human Superpower User.
And this opponent was also a Fire Element Superpower User.
This was a perfect opportunity to test their respective skill levels.
The man looked to be in his twenties. The moment Nina Jacobs finished speaking, he launched a Fireball at her without warning.
Wayne Warner was about to make a move but was stopped by Nina Jacobs.
"Just stay back and watch," Nina Jacobs said.
Nina Jacobs had already dodged the man’s Fireball, which quickly vanished after hitting the ground.
"My turn."
Nina Jacobs threw the Fireball in her hand as well.
"That’s it?"
The man dodged the Fireball and was about to say something when one of his companions shouted a warning: "Watch out!"
"What?"
The man never expected that the Fireball he had just dodged would actually ricochet back at him?!
BAM!
The Fireball struck him squarely in the back.
The man let out a pained scream.
"Stop! That’s enough!"
Even as the man in the leather jacket shouted this, he was already controlling bricks from the ground and hurling them at Nina Jacobs.
Wayne Warner smashed the bricks in mid-air with his bare hands.
"He’s a Strength Element Superpower User!" one of the women shouted.
"Don’t stop now. I’m not done yet."
Nina Jacobs had been practicing the Fireball Tracking Technique for the past two days. She had used less than half of her Superpower for that last Fireball.
