Chapter 79: Chapter 79: A Glimmer of Hope

"Alright, I’ll be waiting for you."

Nina Jacobs smiled as she left, not giving Wyatt Jacobs another glance.

In her past life, Wyatt Jacobs had awakened his Superpower more than half a month later.

’No wonder Wyatt Jacobs can still keep his cool.’

The night before, Nina Jacobs had activated Five Senses Enhancement.

However, she only heard Liam Grant’s parents scolding Hannah Grant.

It seemed to be because Hannah Grant had found a boyfriend with no Superpower.

Nina Jacobs couldn’t be bothered to listen to such a family argument, so she turned off the Five Senses Enhancement Skill early on.

Now, she was driving her SUV on the road to the old house.

The system map had planned an optimal route for her.

Nina Jacobs discovered that the two blocked road sections from before were now passable.

’The shelter must have sent people to clear them.’

"There’s a high probability of zombies ahead,"

Nina Jacobs said, looking at the yellow marker that appeared on the map.

This kind of marker often meant there was a small, clustered group of zombies in the middle of the road.

She could have powered through them, but Nina Jacobs chose to get out and clear them.

Wayne Warner didn’t say anything, but he followed her out anyway.

After incinerating two zombies’ heads, Nina Jacobs glanced at Wayne Warner.

Although Wayne Warner was slow to react, he seemed very talented when it came to his Superpower and combat.

He could always strike a zombie’s vital points quickly.

And not just with his fists.

If a regular zombie was hit by one of his kicks, at best, it would knock down a large swath of other zombies; at worst, it would be sent flying into a nearby wall and reduced to a pile of gore.

Nina Jacobs had rarely encountered such a Strength Element Superpower, even in her past life.

The Heart of Strange Fire was active. Nina Jacobs manipulated the flame on her fingertip, turning it into a Fire Spike that instantly pierced a zombie’s eye socket.

This success made her eyes light up.

’Just as the Fire Element Skill Book described. Even the most inconspicuous flame could unleash its maximum power if used correctly.’

She then tried to use a Fire Spike as a homing attack. While it successfully tracked the zombie, it failed to kill it.

"I really do need more practice."

Nina Jacobs didn’t dwell on it.

Instead, she started coordinating with Wayne Warner.

Facing the dozens of surrounding zombies, Wayne Warner took the front, shielding Nina Jacobs.

Every punch and kick took down several zombies.

Meanwhile, Nina Jacobs focused on using her Fire Element Superpower from the rear.

Several Fireballs and Fire Spikes erupted at once, and the zombies at the back were instantly dispatched before they could even advance.

"That should do it. Let’s go."

Once the middle of the road was clear, Nina Jacobs quickly harvested the Crystal Cores.

Although more zombies were being drawn to the area, she had no intention of getting bogged down in a fight.

Once their Superpowers were exhausted, getting back to the old house quickly was the only safe option.

The two drove on for another two hours without incident.

Nina Jacobs noticed that there seemed to be fewer zombies ahead.

Just as she was starting to relax a little, she spotted a large amount of blood on the road ahead.

The bloodstains were clearly fresh.

There weren’t many houses on either side of this suburban road, and the old ones had long been abandoned.

Large patches of empty land had been converted into farmland and vegetable plots.

Nina Jacobs became more vigilant, driving slowly forward and following the trail of blood.

She even saw some fragments of human tissue scattered on the road.

"Someone must have been chased by zombies and fled that way."

Nina Jacobs saw that the trail of blood veered off to one side of the road.

Two clear sets of tire tracks, as well as numerous footprints, were also visible on the roadside.

’Those must be zombie footprints.’

’Those people were injured and are still being chased.’

"No wonder there were no zombies on the way here,"

Nina Jacobs said. "These people must have lured them away."

Wayne Warner’s silence was her only answer.

Not far away, a small, blood-soaked bus was stopped in a withered field.

The vehicle’s front wheels were sunk deep in a pit of dirt.

No matter how hard they floored the accelerator, the bus wouldn’t budge.

What’s more, a horde of zombies now surrounded the vehicle.

Some zombies had even climbed onto the roof, trying to drag the humans inside out through the vents.

"It’s over. We’re completely finished."

A young man slumped down, his face covered in grime. The axe in his hand, soaked in black blood, was a testament to the fierce battle he had just fought.

"We struggled so hard to get here... and we were so close to the shelter."

The hair of the girl next to him was plastered messily to her face.

Inside the sweltering bus, the clothes and hair of the few survivors were already soaked with sweat.

"Yeah, we’ve been on the run for ten whole days, and this is how it ends. I can’t accept it, I just can’t accept it!"

Another man, one with glasses, clenched his fists.

They were all colleagues from the same office building.

Just moments ago, to give them enough time to escape, an injured companion had jumped out to act as a decoy...

But they had still failed!

Among the remaining few inside the bus, those with Superpowers, like Winnie Langdon, had already exhausted their abilities and were completely drained.

The rest of them were out of stamina as well.

And to think they had survived so many escapes together before setting out.

"I don’t want to turn into one of those things."

Robert Abbott, who had been slumped on the floor, stood up.

"Robert, what are you doing?"

Seeing Robert Abbott pull out a clean dagger and point it at himself, the others used what little strength they had left to wrestle it away from him.

"What if there’s still hope?"

"What hope could there be! There’s none left!"

Robert Abbott screamed, his eyes red with despair.

"Someone..."

Winnie Langdon peered through the terrifying zombie faces outside the window and thought she saw a vehicle approaching in the distance.

At first, she thought it was a hallucination brought on by her exhaustion.

But the vehicle grew closer and closer, and she couldn’t help but sit up straight.

"There really is someone! Someone’s here!"

Winnie Langdon’s words made everyone else in the bus freeze.

They looked out in astonishment and saw that someone had indeed arrived.

"Could it be the rescue team?"

someone asked.

"Probably not. That’s a private vehicle, not the rescue team."

Charles Rowan stared at the vehicle along with the others.

And while they were still wondering, the two people in the vehicle got right out.

It was a man and a woman.

The man was tall and sturdy. The woman wore a sleeveless jacket and cargo pants, an outfit that made her look slender yet powerful.

The moment the two got out of the car, the zombies that had been swarming the bus all rushed toward them.

"Are they... helping us?"

Robert Abbott asked in disbelief.

But there were only two of them...

"They’re Superpower Users! They’re Superpower Users!"

As the woman swung her long knife, flames instantly engulfed the heads of several zombies.

The man was immensely strong, blowing a zombie’s head apart with a single kick.

’He must be protecting her, giving her openings to use her Fire Element Superpower.’

"So strong..."

Charles Rowan watched, his eyes glued to the scene.

’Those terrifying, cruel zombies are no match for them.’

"There are still three mutated zombies. Will they be okay?"

Winnie Langdon said worriedly.

"What are you all still standing around for? Get out there and help."

Robert Abbott, who had just been resigned to death, felt a surge of strength welling up inside him.

’A sliver of hope has appeared. Whether we take this gamble or not is up to us!’
