After I Fully Prepared for the Apocalypse, the Ungrateful Cried with Regret-Chapter 76: Return to the Shelter
But Ian Chandler looked confused.
"My mom is just a government employee."
’What else could she be?’
"Really?"
Leo Hale was skeptical.
When he and Ian had killed those people earlier, Myra Lawson hadn’t reacted like a typical government employee.
"Nina, where are you going?"
Ian Chandler asked, seeing Nina Jacobs take the Fire Roaring Blade out of the car.
"I’m going to kill some zombies."
Nina Jacobs felt like there was nothing left for her to do here.
’Since I’m idle anyway, I might as well go grind some experience.’
"Count me in." 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎
Leo Hale could feel that some of his Superpower had recovered.
Chelsea Walsh wasn’t in the mood, but Ian Chandler planned to go along too.
"You’re going to kill zombies again?"
Seeing the pleading look on Ian’s face, Myra Lawson immediately gave in.
The rescue team was currently killing zombies just outside the parking lot.
Besides, there weren’t many zombies around, so Ian shouldn’t be in any danger.
"Fine, fine. You can go.
I’ll have Owen Lewis protect you."
Watching Ian happily run toward the two people waiting for him in the distance, Myra Lawson suddenly felt an inexplicable urge to cry.
She couldn’t forget the feeling of losing Ian in her dream.
The Ian in her dream couldn’t laugh or cry, like a puppet drained of all life.
He must have been sick, but she couldn’t cure him.
But the Ian before her now was so alive. He could laugh, act cute, and even had a sly, mischievous streak.
’This is so much better,’
Myra Lawson suddenly thought.
That same day, Chester Pearson and Myron Sinclair, who were part of the search and rescue operation, led a team to save over ten more people from Ardmore University.
Three of them were members of Rescue Team 3.
Forrest Walsh was among them.
However, Forrest’s condition was critical. His wounds were severely infected, and he was already in a dangerous state of shock by the time he was brought to the shelter.
It wasn’t just Forrest; the other rescued survivors were also in life-threatening conditions to varying degrees.
They had reportedly been without food or water for nearly six days.
"Antibiotics! Inject him with antibiotics, now!"
"The patient also needs rehydration with Electrolyte Water! We need a large supply of medical-grade Electrolyte Water!"
"..."
The infirmary instantly descended into chaos.
"Wayne Warner, what are you doing here? Are you injured again?"
Josie Joyce was running around, completely swamped.
But Wayne Warner’s massive frame was too conspicuous among the crowd, and she spotted him immediately.
Wayne Warner didn’t answer.
He just placed the two boxes he was carrying in front of Josie Joyce.
"This is..."
Josie Joyce cried out in pleasant surprise.
It was the medical-grade Electrolyte Water they desperately needed!
It was the scarcest resource in the shelter, and it would be a huge help to the survivors rescued today.
Josie Joyce was busy for several hours straight.
When she finally remembered Wayne Warner, she realized he had already left the infirmary long ago.
"Nina Jacobs must have sent him,"
Josie Joyce said with a smile, pulling down her mask.
Nina Jacobs hadn’t expected the Electrolyte Water to be so effective.
In a single afternoon, she had already received over ten bottles of Healing Potion from the System.
And there were only a dozen or so survivors who had been rescued by the helicopter.
’Not that surprising, since I added a little something to it.’
Nina Jacobs had already changed into clean clothes.
She had added Healing Potion to the Electrolyte Water, and now she had earned it all back.
The box on the table had just been delivered by Ian Chandler. Inside was a container of cleaned Crystal Cores.
Today was the first time Nina had tried using the "Superpower Energy Stone."
While she was killing zombies outside the parking lot, the "Superpower Energy Stone" had successfully replenished her Superpower after she had completely exhausted it.
Now, however, the Superpower Energy Stone had turned a deep gray.
It looked no different from an ordinary rock.
Nina Jacobs placed it in the box with the Crystal Cores, and just as she expected, the stone began to glow faintly.
In less than a minute, the gray stone transformed into a jade-like green.
And the hundred-plus Crystal Cores in the box had been completely absorbed.
"It’s a real energy hog..."
Nina Jacobs hadn’t expected the Superpower Energy Stone to consume so many Crystal Cores.
Fortunately, her haul today had been substantial. In between killing zombies outside the parking lot, she had picked up and dug out two to three hundred Crystal Cores.
On top of that, the System was about to level up.
Nina was eager to upgrade the System as soon as possible.
She had already accepted Freebie Mission 14.
Mission 14 was a Five Stars mission with high difficulty and a large amount of supplies.
Her remaining inventory slots weren’t enough to hold it all.
"Time to get serious."
After putting everything away, Nina Jacobs walked out of her room.
Outside, only Wayne Warner and Vera Coleman were in the living area.
Wayne was eating the food on the table, while Vera wore a look of astonishment.
The shelter distributed food rations for each person at every meal.
Wayne Warner had devoured a lunch meant for four people all by himself and still didn’t seem full.
This was the leftover lunch from the people who hadn’t returned at noon.
Vera wasn’t worried about the food, but she was afraid Wayne didn’t know his own limits and would eat himself sick.
"Maybe Strength Element Superpower Users burn more energy."
What Nina didn’t say was that she had already fed Wayne over a dozen meat buns when he went to her car to move the Electrolyte Water...
All because he had taken the initiative to say the word "hungry" to her.
"As long as he doesn’t make himself sick, it’s fine."
Vera had warmed up to Wayne considerably after learning that he proactively protected her daughter when they were outside.
"Do you know who I saw today?"
Vera Coleman rarely left their rooms, but she would sometimes take walks in the hallway outside.
"I saw Wyatt Jacobs. It looks like he’s living in the room at the very end of this corridor,
and he was with that ex-boyfriend of yours,
Honestly..."
Vera couldn’t fathom why Wyatt Jacobs would be with Liam Grant.
"Oh? So they’re living that close?"
Nina’s interest was piqued. It seemed her "Five Senses Enhancement" would come in handy again.
"And it seems Liam Grant’s parents are here too.
They argue with people at almost every meal, always complaining that the food they’re given is terrible..."
Vera told Nina everything she had encountered during the day.
"Is Uncle Hale busy?"
Nina asked.
She had noticed that Daniel Hale seemed to be getting busier and busier these past two days.
"Not really.
Lawson wants him to get involved in the shelter’s internal management. He probably wants to keep him around to help,"
Vera replied.
Daniel Hale used to manage a company and was named a model city-level business leader year after year. Justin Lawson was short-staffed, so he thought of him.
"That’s a good thing, isn’t it? Doesn’t Uncle Hale want to do it?"
Nina was interested.
Managing the shelter now meant managing the future base later.
"He’s willing to help Lawson, but he’s not really interested in any official position,"
Vera said.
"I’ll ask Uncle Hale about it later. He should really consider it."
Nina remembered from her past life that among the most developed bases in Drakonia, the City D Base was one of them.
Many other bases were either overrun by zombies or lost their supply lines and devolved into private strongholds.
In the later stages, the City D Base was targeted by too many people, which was why its management became so chaotic.
But in this life, many things were developing in a better direction.
If Daniel Hale could establish a foothold in the base, the pros would far outweigh the cons.
