Chapter 72: Chapter 72: A Narrow Escape

The flaming Fire Roaring Blade slashed toward the Thunder Element zombie.

From his vantage point in the air, Myron Sinclair could even see the zombie’s head fly off.

"Impressive Sword Technique!"

Myron Sinclair exclaimed in admiration.

"Lawson, quick, look over there!"

Vaughn Rowan pointed at a figure on the ground.

"That’s Ian Chandler. I see him."

The woman held back her tears.

For a moment, she thought her eyes were playing tricks on her.

She had clearly seen Ian Chandler brandishing something as he stabbed at a zombie.

’How did my sweet, gentle son end up fighting zombies?’

"Looks like someone’s coming."

Nina Jacobs had actually spotted the helicopter flying toward them a moment ago.

’Are the shelter’s reinforcements really here so soon?’

The number of zombies was still increasing, and many had already scrambled over the roofs of the cars.

The helicopter circled twice in the air, as if greeting them.

Then, it headed toward the horde of zombies still rushing toward them from up ahead.

Instantly, a hail of gunfire erupted up ahead.

The helicopter provided the perfect angle for shooting zombies; each one died from a bullet to the head.

"Captain Pearson, someone’s here to help us!"

Russell Abbott said excitedly.

"Yes, they’re here."

Chester Pearson hadn’t expected Myra Lawson to arrive so quickly.

’Then the one with her must be Myron Sinclair.’

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

Several silenced grenades landed on a distant street. The explosions had a large blast radius but weren’t very loud.

"They’re insane."

Chester Pearson frowned.

But this also bought them time to escape.

Many of the surrounding zombies were drawn toward the sound of the explosions.

"Full retreat! Now!"

Chester Pearson ordered.

Watching the cars retreat swiftly below, Myron Sinclair let out a sharp whistle.

"Damn, there are still a lot of zombies on the road over there."

From her vantage point in the air, Myra Lawson could see the conditions on the streets below.

"Don’t worry. If they run into more zombies,

I’ll take care of them."

Myron Sinclair said with a wide grin.

However, to their surprise, the cars below managed to perfectly avoid the more zombie-infested roads every time they came to a fork.

The convoy quickly made it out of the dangerous area.

"That’s the direction of Ardmore University,

what are they going there for?"

Vaughn Rowan asked with a confused look after checking the map.

"Let’s find a safe area to land, too,"

Myra Lawson said.

The convoy on the ground had now stopped in a fenced-in parking lot.

It seemed they were waiting for them.

"As you command, Ms. Myra..."

After stopping the car, Nina Jacobs checked the status of her Superpower.

She also glanced at her system’s experience bar.

In the last hour, while they were pinned down by zombies, she had killed over a hundred of them.

This included several mutated zombies.

With the Experience Points contributed by her few "teammates," her system looked like it was close to leveling up.

’True opportunities really do come from challenges,’ she thought.

It was a shame she had just missed out on so many Crystal Cores she didn’t have time to dig out.

"We finally made it out alive.

We have the people in that helicopter to thank."

Leo Hale took off his soaked jacket. After resting in the car for a while, the feeling of complete exhaustion he’d felt earlier finally subsided.

’So this is what it feels like to completely use up your Superpower.’

"Here they come."

Nina Jacobs watched the people getting out of the helicopter, a little surprised.

’Is that Myra Lawson?’

"My mom’s here. Don’t say anything in a moment."

Ian Chandler was still very happy to see Myra Lawson.

"That’s your mom?"

Leo Hale asked in disbelief.

He would have believed it if someone had said she was Ian Chandler’s older sister.

’But why did Ian Chandler tell them not to say anything?’

By now, Ian Chandler had already gotten out of the car to greet her.

Myra Lawson had been having nightmares for several days straight.

She dreamed of Ian Chandler beaten and bloodied, and she heard his cries for help.

She had been in the neighboring City F, searching for Ian Chandler where he went to school.

She never expected that he would have returned to his hometown, City D.

After receiving the message sent by Justin Lawson, she had rushed back without a moment’s delay.

When she heard Ian Chandler wasn’t at the shelter, she had Myron Sinclair fly the helicopter straight out to find him.

"It must be nice to reunite with your family, alive and well."

Chelsea Walsh said enviously. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝚠𝚎𝚋𝗻𝗼𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝚘𝐦

"Hello, everyone. I’m Ian Chandler’s mother, Myra Lawson."

Even if the parking lot was clear of zombies, standing outside for too long would eventually attract them.

So, Myra Lawson and her two companions followed Chester Pearson into one of the cars.

Fortunately, the vehicle was spacious, with two long benches facing each other.

Even with two more people, it didn’t feel crowded.

Everyone exchanged greetings.

When she saw Nina Jacobs, Myra Lawson couldn’t help but take a second look.

She hadn’t expected the person who had just killed the mutated Thunder Element zombie, Nina Jacobs, to look so quiet and gentle.

And so young.

Leo Hale and the others finally understood why Ian Chandler had told them not to say anything.

Tear tracks still stained Ian Chandler’s face, as if he had suffered some tremendous injustice.

In just a few words, he recounted everything that had happened recently.

He made sure to praise each of them along the way.

"Walsh from the third squad has been missing for several days, and Miss Walsh has been worried sick about him.

I was thinking about how Miss Walsh has been protecting me all this time and even cooked delicious food for me.

I really, really want to help them."

Seeing her son like this, Myra Lawson’s heart melted.

"Rescue him! Of course, we’ll rescue him!

We must rescue him!

This is the shelter’s responsibility in the first place,

so don’t you worry. Now that we have a lead, we will absolutely search until we find him."

Myra Lawson carefully watched Ian Chandler’s expression.

"But before the rescue, we must first confirm if anyone from the third squad is still inside."

"Chester Pearson, you and Myron will go and conduct a search.

If you confirm there are survivors from the third squad, organize a search and rescue operation immediately!"

Myra Lawson ordered without hesitation.

It seemed the most suitable method of searching was by helicopter.

In truth, the chances of Squad Three’s survival were minuscule, but she didn’t want to disappoint her son again.

"Thank you so much!"

Chelsea Walsh wanted to go with them, but the helicopter had limited seating.

If they actually managed to rescue any survivors, there would be even less space.

So, she had to give up on the idea.

"It’s only right. You’re all Ian Chandler’s good friends.

I’m the one who should be thanking you for taking care of him."

Myra Lawson’s gaze was sincere, immediately winning the goodwill of Chelsea Walsh and the others.

"Got it. Let’s go, Chet-Chet."

Myron Sinclair draped an arm over Chester Pearson’s shoulder, acting like they were the best of buddies.

"Sure thing, My-My,"

Chester Pearson shot back with a similar smile.

The moment the car door closed, however, both of them immediately dropped the act, their faces turning expressionless.

"Heard you awakened a Superpower, too?

Congratulations."

Myron Sinclair said as he walked toward the nearby helicopter.

"Right back at you,"

Chester Pearson said flatly.

"Oh, right. I heard the newly appointed captain of the fourth squad also has a Fire Element Superpower.

I hear he’s the strongest in the entire shelter at the moment.

You’d better not let someone else outshine you and disappoint Lawson."

Myron Sinclair said with a grin.

"The guy with the last name Grant? Are you two close?"

Chester Pearson was confused. ’Didn’t Myron Sinclair just get back today?’

’He sure seems to know a lot, even being acquainted with Liam Grant.’
