Chapter 63: Chapter 63: How Many Did She Save?

She wasn’t sure if she could save Wayne Warner.

Because one of the bullets was still lodged in the upper back of his head.

Nina Jacobs was no doctor. She had heard stories of people surviving a bullet to the head, but besides his head, Wayne Warner had been shot in many other places.

It was only because his Strength Element Superpower had made his skin hard enough at that moment to provide some temporary protection.

Seeing that one bottle of Healing Potion had no effect, Nina Jacobs poured another one down his throat...

By the time she had finished killing all the remaining zombies in the hall, Wayne Warner still hadn’t woken up.

’So he died after all?’

Nina Jacobs sighed.

She searched the manor inside and out but found no other living people, though there were plenty of supplies.

Nina Jacobs put all the supplies into her storage space.

Finally, she set a large fire, intending to burn away all the filth.

The roaring flames quickly blazed to life.

Nina Jacobs walked down the hillside and opened her car door, but when she turned back, she saw what looked like a human figure in the light of the fire.

The figure was swaying unsteadily, but it didn’t look like a zombie.

’Is that Wayne Warner?’

Wayne Warner’s build was so tall and sturdy that even from a great distance, Nina Jacobs could tell it was him.

"Th... thank you."

That was the first thing Wayne Warner said when he reached Nina Jacobs.

"You’re welcome."

Nina Jacobs looked at Wayne Warner and noticed that his gaze seemed a little strange.

"Thank you."

"You’re welcome."

"Thank you."

"..."

Nina Jacobs watched him.

’Is he thanking me for killing Seth Quinn and his men?’

’But I failed to save his sister, Jade, just now.’

"Do you remember what just happened?

Or what your name is?"

Unwilling to give up, Nina Jacobs pressed on.

"Thank you."

It seemed those two words were all he could say in response.

’Does he only remember how to say thank you?’

"It’s better if you’ve forgotten."

Nina Jacobs didn’t dwell on it.

Anyone who saw their sister murdered like that would be tormented by regret for the rest of their life.

’I wonder if Wayne Warner will ever remember what happened.’

All Nina Jacobs knew was that right now, Wayne Warner’s face was completely blank.

There was no pain or sorrow.

"Should I take you to the shelter?"

Leaving Wayne Warner alone in the middle of nowhere wasn’t an option.

Besides, it was already afternoon.

"Thank you."

Wayne Warner replied.

"..."

Nina Jacobs had Wayne Warner sit in the back of the car while she pulled up the system map that only she could see.

Seeing the remaining distance and travel time, Nina Jacobs breathed a sigh of relief.

They could make it back to the shelter before dark.

...

Vera Coleman had been on edge all afternoon.

Her daughter, Nina Jacobs, still hadn’t returned.

Although Daniel Hale and the others had tried to comfort her, she still had a bad feeling.

The great weight on her heart finally lifted when Ian Chandler had someone deliver a message that Nina Jacobs was back.

"Why did she go to the medical bay? Is Nina injured?"

As soon as Daniel Hale heard Nina Jacobs had gone to the medical bay, he rushed over.

"Miss Jacobs isn’t injured,

a friend she brought back is."

Sean Caldwell quickly explained.

"Uncle Hale."

Daniel Hale was relieved to see Nina Jacobs safe and sound.

"And this is..."

He also noticed Wayne Warner standing next to Nina Jacobs.

Wayne Warner was so huge that he was impossible to miss standing beside her.

"His name is Wayne Warner. Something happened on the road, and he was injured, so I brought him back with me."

Nina Jacobs explained.

She had already had Wayne Warner change into clean clothes.

Thanks to the Healing Potion, his wounds were no longer bleeding.

But the biggest problem was that the bullets were still inside him.

There was one in the back of his head, too, which was why she’d brought him to the medical bay.

Ian Chandler had already arranged for Wayne Warner to receive emergency treatment, but he acted as if he couldn’t understand the doctor and would only stay by her side.

"If that’s the case, maybe his brain suffered some kind of trauma?"

Daniel Hale looked at Wayne Warner and felt it was a shame.

’Such a young man, and his mind is broken. His family would be devastated if they knew.’

"It looks like he only listens to you. Why don’t you try talking to him?"

A young female medic standing nearby suggested.

"Me?"

Nina Jacobs glanced at Wayne Warner. ’Would it even work if I tried?’

"Why don’t you go get treated first?"

Nina Jacobs said tentatively.

"Okay."

Unexpectedly, Wayne Warner actually agreed.

Watching Wayne Warner obediently follow the medical staff away, Nina Jacobs couldn’t figure out what was going on.

"If you’re the one who saved him, maybe this behavior is his way of repaying his debt to you?"

Daniel Hale said.

"Repaying his debt?" 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎

Nina Jacobs didn’t need anyone to repay a debt to her.

If Wayne Warner could understand what people were saying, that proved he was capable of taking care of himself.

Just as Nina Jacobs was about to go back and rest, she ran into Renee Strong, who was walking toward her.

Renee Strong was wearing the uniform of the medical bay staff.

"Nina Jacobs?"

Renee Strong didn’t know why Nina Jacobs was in the medical bay.

"I’m a Healer here. Oh, right, you probably don’t know,

I awakened a Healing Element Superpower."

Renee Strong said with a smile.

"You don’t look so good yourself. Why don’t you heal yourself first?"

Nina Jacobs retorted with a blunt smile.

Renee Strong’s face was pale—a clear sign of Superpower exhaustion.

Many Healers who overused their Superpowers would even experience premature aging and their hair turning white over time.

Right now, Renee Strong looked much more haggard than before.

"Nina Jacobs, do you have any idea what you’re saying?"

A voice came from behind her. Liam Grant had appeared in the hallway at some point.

"Renee poured her heart and soul into treating the injured rescue workers today,

I know you’ve always been hung up on what happened between us,

but you shouldn’t speak to Renee with that kind of tone.

You’re as immature as ever!"

Liam Grant held Renee Strong’s hand, looking at Nina Jacobs with considerable anger.

"Is that so? What does her saving other people have to do with me?

And you’re still the same as ever, always trying to guilt-trip others."

Nina Jacobs wasn’t angry at all.

After all, she knew exactly what these two were like.

"You’re right. You’ve always been this way—selfish and cold-blooded.

Of course you wouldn’t understand the significance of saving lives and healing the wounded."

Liam Grant sneered.

"Saving lives and healing the wounded? How many did she save?"

Nina Jacobs asked curiously.

In the early stages, a Healer could only treat minor wounds.

"Zero, I’d say."

Chester Pearson stepped out from a group of onlookers.

"Miss Strong really should work on strengthening her Superpower.

After all, by the time you finished healing me, this wound of mine was about to close up on its own."

Chester Pearson pointed to a pink scar on the web of his hand.

"Just kidding. But I still have to thank you,

for using all your Superpower on my hand."

Just a moment ago, Renee Strong had volunteered to heal him.

In reality, he only had a bleeding cut on the web of his hand from a shockwave, and he had originally planned to just bandage it.

Even after Renee Strong had completely exhausted her Superpower, his wound was still a pink scar.

"At least it saved some gauze."

Chester Pearson’s words were as blunt as ever, and Liam Grant’s expression had turned much darker.
