After I Fully Prepared for the Apocalypse, the Ungrateful Cried with Regret-Chapter 190: Divination
"Search! Split up and search."
"Colin Rowan’s group wouldn’t just mess around. Something must have happened."
Levi Stone ordered immediately.
"Ian, Miss Jacobs,"
"for safety’s sake, why don’t you two rest here for now?"
"We’ll go look for them."
Levi Stone said.
"Okay."
Nina Jacobs agreed.
’This is so weird. Where could so many people have gone?’
’It’s just too bizarre.’
Leo Hale wanted to go with Levi Stone and the others to find them,
but he had promised Nina Jacobs he wouldn’t wander off.
"Let me try."
Sherry Renner had already taken out her Compass.
"Will that work?"
Leo Hale was a little skeptical.
"Well, it’s not like we have anything else to do while we wait."
Sherry Renner didn’t have much faith in herself either, but she began to mutter an incantation nonetheless.
Meanwhile, Nina Jacobs was observing her surroundings in the main hall of the encampment.
’This stuff is still warm.’
Nina Jacobs discovered a thermos on a table.
The water inside was still lukewarm.
Furthermore, there was some packed luggage on the floor along the walls of the hall.
It seemed the survivors here had indeed been preparing to leave.
"I’m getting a little scared. Don’t tell me we’re actually dealing with ghosts."
Leo Hale got goosebumps after hearing that.
"Leo, ghosts can’t be much scarier than zombies,"
Ian Chandler said.
"Good point. If only my dad were here,"
"we’d find them in no time."
Leo Hale said with some regret.
"It is very strange."
Nina Jacobs had already tried using her Five Senses Enhancement.
Aside from the sounds of the rescue team searching, she hadn’t detected any other unusual noises.
"Could this be related to what happened earlier?"
Ian Chandler asked.
"It’s possible."
Nina Jacobs frowned. If that were the case, the survivors might be in danger.
"Sherry, any leads on your end?"
Nina Jacobs asked Sherry Renner.
"Without the birth dates and times of the missing people, I can only divine that there might be a large group gathered to the southeast,"
Sherry Renner said with a frown.
"But the southeastern part of this island is a huge area,"
"and there’s a mountain over there, too."
Leo Hale knew a little about it, as he had visited Beldane Island before the apocalypse.
"Let’s just wait for Captain Stone and his team to get back."
Ian Chandler thought they could indeed search in the general direction Sherry Renner had indicated.
However, the rescue team might find the missing survivors before that.
Nina Jacobs agreed.
While waiting for the rescue team to return, the group looked around the immediate area.
"What’s this?"
Nina Jacobs found a stack of large packaging bags next to a trash can.
After unfolding them, she realized they were all dog food bags.
"Maybe they ran out of supplies, so the survivors started eating dog food?"
Leo Hale suggested.
"It’s possible."
Nina Jacobs couldn’t think of another reason and felt that Leo Hale’s theory made sense.
About two hours later, the members of the rescue team returned one after another.
But none of them looked relieved.
"You didn’t find anything?"
Leo Hale and the others were astonished.
"You said it. This is a first for us, too."
Franklin Abbott was drenched in sweat.
They had just run a lap around the entire island but hadn’t seen a single soul.
The last one to return was Levi Stone.
Like the others, he had found nothing.
"So... should we check the southeast again?"
Sherry Renner said quietly,
sounding very uncertain.
"The southeast? We just got back from there."
"There’s nothing there."
A team member answered, gasping for breath.
"Go. Search again. Go now!"
Levi Stone knew a little about Sherry Renner’s abilities.
On several occasions, other squads’ rescue missions had indeed located supplies thanks to her divination.
"Captain Stone, let’s go together."
Nina Jacobs said.
"Alright."
Levi Stone nodded. He glanced at the time, his anxiety growing.
They had already lost a lot of time on the way here.
It was already afternoon. If they couldn’t find the survivors soon, they might have to spend the night here.
Lawson’s own grandson was here.
If contact was lost, he couldn’t imagine how worried everyone back at the shelter would become...
The southeastern part of Beldane Island was a concentration of restaurants and entertainment shops.
But after the acid rain and the zombie outbreak, it had been reduced to a pile of ruins.
"All the zombies on this island have been cleared out,"
"and the bodies have all been incinerated."
Levi Stone said, pointing to a large, scorched area in the distance.
That was why the island looked relatively clean.
"It’s actually pretty safe here. If the base was located here,"
"wouldn’t it be even safer?"
Leo Hale commented.
"No. Besides the supply issue,"
"we’re also worried that the black water here will eventually submerge the island,"
Levi Stone replied.
The black water had already corroded and breached the levee at Rivermouth Pier.
"Good point. If we really lived here,"
"we’d probably have to smell this stench every second of the day,"
Leo Hale muttered to himself.
"Nina, what are you looking at?"
Sherry Renner noticed Nina Jacobs staring at something on the side of the road.
It was a photo message board made from a converted phone booth.
Many of the photos inside had been corroded and dissolved, but some remained.
Leo Hale glanced over and said,
"Oh, this used to be an influencer photo op spot."
"Besides this phone booth message board, there used to be a famous Golden Retriever here."
"Anyone could take a picture with him. He had a great personality."
Leo Hale rattled on.
"No wonder he’s in all these pictures."
Nina Jacobs looked at the few remaining mottled photos.
Almost every one showed the Golden Retriever posing with tourists.
"I heard that Golden Retriever was a retired service dog."
"He didn’t have a specific owner, but all the islanders treated him like their own dog."
"During the day, he’d hang out here and greet tourists, so someone named him ’Treasure’."
"You sure know a lot, Leo."
Ian Chandler remarked as they walked.
"Of course! I even took a picture with him."
"I heard a lot of tourists wanted to adopt him, but he just loved staying on this island."
Leo Hale sighed.
Aside from Treasure the Golden Retriever, he was quite fond of this little island.
That’s why when he heard Nina Jacobs was coming here, he had wanted to tag along and see it again.
"We’ve searched carefully along the road."
Levi Stone led the group as they began a systematic search.
They didn’t even overlook the tricycles parked on the roadside.
"Looks like there’s really nothing here."
Sherry Renner was getting discouraged.
There were no tall buildings on the island, only some low-rise structures along the road.
And they had already searched all of those buildings.
Looking ahead, all that remained was the putrid riverbank and some rocks.
Just then, Nina Jacobs heard a strange sound.
The odd noise was coming from somewhere nearby.
It sounded like the low growl of some kind of beast.
"Captain, there are footprints here! A lot of them!"
Franklin Abbott shouted.
Although the riverbank was mostly covered in stones, there were also many patches of black mud.
Looking closely, one could see a large number of human footprints in the mud.
And they were all heading toward the rocks...
"Watch out!"
A Fire Serpent shot across the ground, racing toward the group.
Only then did everyone see a giant beast leap out from behind the pile of rocks!
It had a body nearly three meters long, thick limbs, and furious eyes.
Blocked by Nina Jacobs’s Fire Serpent, the beast did not advance any further.
It opened its massive, lion-like maw and roared at the people before it.
Sherry Renner took two steps back, her eyes wide with disbelief.
"Yes, that’s the sound... That’s the sound I heard on the ship!"
