After I Fully Prepared for the Apocalypse, the Ungrateful Cried with Regret-Chapter 183: City J’s Specialty
Ever since Nina Jacobs left, on top of killing zombies, he had started running 100 laps around the base with weights every day.
He had just gotten back from his run.
"What’s wrong, Leo?"
Another woman, drenched in sweat, appeared behind him.
She was also carrying a burlap sack, though she was a bit on the smaller side.
"Nina?!
You’re back?!"
Sherry Renner dropped her small burlap sack and ran straight for Nina Jacobs.
But she was unceremoniously blocked by Wayne Warner.
"Alright, you two go take a shower first.
I brought back some souvenirs for you."
Nina Jacobs said with a laugh.
"Let’s get inside first. We can talk once we’re in."
Daniel Hale already sensed that someone was home.
Vera Coleman was taking her usual stroll around the room, listening to music.
When she saw the group push the door open and enter, she froze on the spot.
"I brought Nina back.
So? Didn’t I tell you I’d do it?"
Daniel Hale boasted.
He’d expected a loving hug and some praise from Vera Coleman.
But Vera Coleman didn’t even spare him a glance, walking straight to Nina Jacobs.
"You’ve gotten thinner."
Vera Coleman said.
"Wayne Warner is thinner too. Did you two have a hard time out there?"
As Vera Coleman pulled her toward the sofa, Nina Jacobs felt a prickle in her nose at her words.
"We didn’t."
Nina Jacobs replied.
It was as if the hardness in her heart had been smoothed away.
Her underlying anxiety and restlessness gradually faded, and Nina Jacobs felt like her old self again.
The stubborn person she used to be.
’Thinking back,’ she mused, ’Vera always seemed to accept me for who I am.’
"And you say you didn’t.
How could you possibly eat and rest well out there?
I actually got word a few days ago that you were coming."
Vera Coleman started to get up as she spoke, and Nina Jacobs noticed that her belly had gotten even bigger, making her movements a little less nimble.
"Let me."
Seeing Vera Coleman about to get things to start cooking, Nina Jacobs quickly intervened.
"I’ve been sitting in a car all day.
Let me stretch my legs. You go and talk with Nina."
Daniel Hale simply pushed the two of them aside.
Helpless, Nina Jacobs had no choice but to give in.
"It’s so good to see you’re okay, Wayne.
Here, have some of these."
Vera Coleman took out a tray of dried fruits and nuts she had prepared earlier and placed it in front of Wayne Warner.
"Thank you."
Wayne Warner’s eyes glinted as he grabbed a handful of peanuts, crushing the shells in his palm.
"Mom, how much longer?"
Nina Jacobs was referring to Vera Coleman’s belly.
"The doctor said I might need surgery in a little over a month.
Given my condition, they’re all recommending a C-section."
"It’s gone by so fast. It’s already been over seven months,"
Vera Coleman said with a sigh.
’A little over a month?’
’Looks like they’ll be born here in the City D Base.’
"Are the babies healthy?"
Nina Jacobs gently touched Vera Coleman’s belly.
The thought of the two little lives in there made Nina Jacobs feel a mix of strangeness and curiosity.
"They’re perfectly healthy.
Myra Lawson has even come to visit me a few times. She offered to find me a nanny,
but I turned her down."
"A nanny?"
"Yes. Sherry is with me every day, helping out.
Leo is here too, so I didn’t think it was necessary."
Vera Coleman explained.
Nina Jacobs nodded.
’She, however, thought it was quite necessary. The babies would need someone to look after them once they were born.’
She made a mental note of it.
After dinner, Leo Hale curiously asked about the "souvenirs."
"You didn’t actually go to City J on vacation, did you?
I don’t need any souvenirs. I’m just glad you’re back."
Sherry Renner had performed a divination for Nina Jacobs before she left, and the reading had been dire—a slim chance of survival.
She had been worried sick but hadn’t dared to tell anyone.
"You really don’t want any?"
Nina Jacobs took out two Mystic Ice Cores and placed them on the table.
"Rocks?"
No matter how Leo Hale looked at them, they just looked like rocks.
’Why would Nina bring back rocks?’
"You silly boy," Daniel Hale said. "If Nina’s willing to give them to you, you should just be grateful."
Daniel Hale had already bolted the door.
"Absorb them?!"
Once Leo Hale understood what they were, he and Sherry Renner eagerly began to try absorbing them.
"Mom, your situation is special.
I’ll hold onto yours for now."
Nina Jacobs planned to have Vera Coleman absorb the Mystic Ice Core only after she gave birth.
She was pregnant, after all, and Nina worried about potential side effects.
Including the ones she had gotten from Honey Summers,
she now had over sixty Mystic Ice Cores in her storage space.
The effect of the Mystic Ice Core was most pronounced on Sherry Renner.
As a Water Element Superpower User herself, Sherry Renner almost cried out in surprise as she stared at the block of ice solidifying in her hand.
But she knew better than to say anything about it to outsiders for the time being.
"It’d be great if I could evolve a second Superpower, like Ian Chandler."
Leo Hale was also pleasantly surprised after absorbing his.
Before, it took him some time to form a solid metal object, but now a Gold Blade appeared in his hand in an instant.
Moreover, the Gold Blade could freely morph into any shape.
The process was incredibly fluid.
However, upon hearing that Ian Chandler was now a Dual Element Superpower User, he couldn’t help but feel a pang of envy.
"It’s good enough to master one Superpower," Nina Jacobs said. She had originally planned to visit Pascal Paige and the others next door.
But then, Myra Lawson made an unexpected visit.
"I’m sorry to bother you this late."
Seeing Myra Lawson’s urgent expression, Nina Jacobs already had a good idea why she was here.
Inside the private meeting room, there were only two people: Myra Lawson and Nina Jacobs.
Myra Lawson seemed a bit unsure of where to begin.
’It seemed that every time she sought out Nina, it was to ask for a favor.’
"Actually, you don’t need to worry about the Superpower User Alliance.
We’ll handle it and make sure they don’t cause you any more trouble in the future."
Myra Lawson had been heartbroken when she heard Nina Jacobs went to City J to lie low.
She had thought Nina Jacobs trusted the City D Base enough.
She never expected Nina would rather leave the base than stay and ride out the storm.
"My trip to City J wasn’t just because of the Superpower User Alliance.
I also wanted to get some training."
"Really?"
Myra Lawson finally felt a little better after hearing Nina Jacobs’s explanation.
"First of all, congratulations on becoming an Intermediate Superpower User. I heard all about it from Ian Chandler."
Myra Lawson was still thrilled just thinking about it.
She had once thought that having an Intermediate Superpower User was an unattainable dream.
The kind of thing you’d only see in a place like City A.
She never imagined that their own City D would have one.
"Secondly, thank you.
For helping Ian Chandler become a Dual Element Superpower User."
"That was his own talent," Nina Jacobs said. "Not everyone who uses a Mystic Ice Core can awaken a new Superpower."
"These are some special... Crystal Cores I found this time."
Nina Jacobs took fifteen Mystic Ice Cores right out of her backpack.
The existence of Mystic Ice Cores hadn’t been made public yet, so she generally referred to them simply as Crystal Cores in front of others.
Myra Lawson shot to her feet.
Though her eyes burned with desire, she still said,
"Jacobs, these are your own things.
How you handle them is ultimately your decision."
Even though she desperately wanted them.
"I’ve decided... to sell them to our base."
The words were barely out of Nina Jacobs’s mouth when Myra Lawson eagerly asked, "What’s your price?"
"Crystal Cores, plus two buildings,
and permanent residency in the City D Base."
"Oh, and the two buildings need to be next to our house."
The standalone houses in the City D Base weren’t cheap, and they weren’t sold, only rented out.
Nina Jacobs had originally planned to use Gold to pay the rent.
But now that she had a bargaining chip, she intended to cash it in.
