After I Fully Prepared for the Apocalypse, the Ungrateful Cried with Regret-Chapter 125: Why Is He Here?
In the afternoon.
The sounds of zombie roars and fighting echoed from around the Quinn Group building.
The noises lasted for over ten minutes before silence fell once more.
Then, the main gates of the Quinn Group building slowly opened.
"It’s Hughes and the others! They’re back!"
Nina Jacobs was locked in a separate room with a few other new recruits.
It was the first day of training for all of them.
The task for the afternoon was to copy the Superpower User Alliance’s slogan 100 times.
For Nina Jacobs, this was practically torture.
After all, the slogan wasn’t just a few words, but a long declaration of loyalty to The Alliance.
Fortunately, Shirley Lucas had already told her about this part of the process.
So, before coming in, she had secretly grabbed a copy that someone else had already finished.
She was now sitting in the back row.
With her Five Senses Enhancement, she could hear many of the surrounding sounds.
"Mr. Quinn."
Upon hearing this unfamiliar voice, Nina Jacobs immediately pinpointed its location.
"Just take him down. I need to go see Faye first."
’That must be Dylan Quinn’s voice.’
’Take him down?’
’Is he talking about Wayne Warner?’
Nina Jacobs listened more closely but heard no sounds of a struggle.
This made her heart sink.
Knowing Wayne Warner’s personality, he definitely wouldn’t let himself be taken away quietly.
’It seems like Wayne Warner isn’t in a good situation...’
"Mr. Hughes, aren’t you coming with me to see my sister?"
Dylan Quinn asked, watching as Tyson Hughes walked off in another direction.
"No, I have other things to handle."
Tyson Hughes’s retreating back was his only answer.
’That voice... Just as I thought.’
Nina Jacobs recognized that voice.
Tyson Hughes’s voice was identical to that of the Dual Element Superpower User who had burst into the interrogation room.
It was also strikingly similar to the voice of the person handing out flyers when she and Wayne Warner returned.
If it really was him, then Tyson Hughes might never have shown his face to Justin Lawson from the very beginning.
Instead, he had hidden among the others, letting Dylan Quinn negotiate in his place.
All to find the right opportunity to make a move on Cole Dempsey.
Nina Jacobs tried to listen for Wayne Warner’s voice.
But she couldn’t find it.
"I can’t copy this anymore!"
With a CLATTER, a man in front of her slammed his pen down.
He tore the papers on his desk to shreds.
"This is just brainwashing and control!
This isn’t a shelter for civilians at all.
I think we’d be better off finding a way out of here."
The man turned and said to Nina Jacobs and the others.
"But... my roommate said this place is really far from the main shelter. It’s very dangerous..."
a girl said quietly, glancing around.
"It’s better than being their tools here.
Look at those people! They risk their lives for things, only to have everything confiscated when they get back.
All they get in return are a few pathetic points, not even enough to buy a cup of instant noodles.
It’s ridiculous!"
The man grew more and more agitated as he spoke.
He didn’t notice several men in security uniforms entering the room.
Not until his arms were seized from both sides did he see the female trainer walk over, shaking her head.
"This gentleman is experiencing psychological issues.
Don’t be alarmed. A dedicated psychologist will be assigned to assist him."
With that, the man was taken away.
The female trainer glanced at the remaining few people before relocking the door from the outside.
"Where are they taking him?"
a girl in front of Nina Jacobs asked, still shaken.
"Probably to the lab building.
I heard that’s where they put people in solitary confinement.
They also say you can hear women crying and screaming at night."
another woman with short hair whispered in reply.
"A place like that exists here?"
Nina Jacobs couldn’t help but ask. She remembered the short-haired woman was named Yvette Lowe and lived in a six-person dorm.
"That’s just what the others in my dorm said.
The lab building used to be a place for pharmaceutical experiments.
Now, it seems to be open only to Healers.
Think about it. What kind of place would only be open to Healers?
It must be because people are getting hurt or something..."
Yvette Lowe’s story grew more and more outlandish as she spoke.
"Just hurry up and copy. Stop talking.
You’ll bring them back here,"
someone urged.
No other sounds filled the room, only the scratching of pens on paper.
Nina Jacobs, however, was drawing a map on her paper.
According to Shirley Lucas’s intelligence, the Quinn Group had no dedicated prison area.
And the lab building was indeed only open to Healers.
She decided to investigate the situation there tonight.
The copying task didn’t end until five in the afternoon.
Nina Jacobs, along with the others, handed in a thick stack of densely filled paper and was finally allowed to leave.
The new recruit training was held inside the group’s office building.
Wearing a mask, Nina Jacobs followed behind Yvette Lowe and the others, sizing up her surroundings. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞
She had to admit, the layout of The Alliance headquarters was remarkably comprehensive.
It even had a place for testing Superpower levels.
According to Shirley Lucas, after their new recruit training period was over, they would be taken to have their Superpowers tested.
Powerful Superpower Users would be specially cultivated.
Those with mediocre abilities, however, were mostly used as cannon fodder...
"Are you going to eat?
You know we don’t have to use points during the recruit period, right?"
Yvette Lowe turned and asked Nina Jacobs.
They had only found out after arriving that meals were free during the new recruit training period.
"No, you guys go ahead.
I’m going back to the dorm first."
Nina Jacobs didn’t dare wander around aimlessly.
However, she had just said goodbye to Yvette Lowe when a person walking toward her made alarm bells go off in her head.
’What is he doing here?!’
Nina Jacobs lowered her head. She couldn’t believe she was seeing Simon Abbott here?!
Fortunately, he didn’t seem to have noticed her.
Simon Abbott was back to retrieve something.
He often walked without looking from side to side.
But the figure that had just walked past gave him a strange sense of familiarity.
"You, up ahead. Stop."
After Simon Abbott spoke, several people around them turned their heads.
"Not you. I mean her."
Simon Abbott walked toward the figure.
He was almost certain it was her.
"Lift your head. Take off your mask,"
Simon Abbott said.
However, when the woman with the lowered head removed her mask, it revealed an unfamiliar face.
"Sir, can I help you?"
The woman looked confused, as if she didn’t understand why he had stopped her.
"It’s nothing. I mistook you for someone else."
Simon Abbott also thought his eyes had been playing tricks on him.
’How could Nina Jacobs possibly be here?’
He shook his head and continued walking in the direction he was headed.
The woman behind him put her mask back on and headed for the dormitory building.
Nina Jacobs didn’t finally breathe a sigh of relief until she was back in her room.
The moment Simon Abbott had stopped her, she had switched to her "Claire Warner" appearance without a moment’s hesitation.
That’s how she had narrowly avoided a huge problem.
’He really isn’t dead.’
As many of her questions seemed about to fall into place, Nina Jacobs suddenly realized something.
Liam Grant and the others might have been played by Simon Abbott from the very beginning.
But she hadn’t forgotten the reason she was here.
Right now, the top priority was still to rescue Wayne Warner.
When night fell, Nina Jacobs changed into a set of dark clothes.
After drinking an Invisibility Potion, she ran toward the so-called lab building.
