Chapter 90: Chapter 90: Most Compatible with Him

Alice York now truly understood what it meant for one person’s joy to be another’s sorrow.

She was dying of shame!

But Wyatt Sterling was praising her for her good performance!

She said indignantly, "Third Uncle, aren’t you worried at all that Big Brother will tell everyone about us?"

If you walk down a dark road long enough, you’re bound to run into a ghost one day.

But Wyatt Sterling had an unconcerned air about him. "So what if he does?"

"So what? Yes, if Big Brother exposes this, you won’t be affected at all, Third Uncle. But what about me?"

Alice York suddenly lost her appetite for the wontons.

She set down her bowl. "Throughout history, in every dramatic affair between a man and a woman, it’s always the woman who ends up being criticized. The woman is always the one who gets condemned, while the man seems to have a get-out-of-jail-free card, easily extricating himself."

These words weren’t an outburst or a complaint. She was simply stating a fact calmly.

Because that was reality.

Once her relationship with Wyatt Sterling was exposed, he could easily wash his hands of the whole affair, and the price of his escape would be her bearing all the blame alone!

"What kind of nonsense is going through your head?" His tone was displeased.

Alice replied, "One has to be prepared for a rainy day."

Wyatt Sterling took the bowl of wontons from her hands, stirred it with the spoon, and brought it to her lips. "Just eat your wontons and stop overthinking."

She stubbornly kept her lips sealed.

Wyatt Sterling was at a loss with her. Scolding her too often just made her hold a grudge. Since being stern didn’t work, he could only coax her. "What you’re worried about will never happen. I can promise you that."

Alice thought she must have misheard. Wyatt Sterling was actually making her a promise.

"It’ll get cold if you don’t eat." Though he was urging her, his patience was endless.

Alice’s expression shifted from disbelief to suspicion. "This is the first time you’ve ever been so patient while coaxing me to eat, Third Uncle."

’It’s like he’s been possessed.’

She didn’t dare say that last part out loud. It was too provocative; she’d get a beating if she said it.

Wyatt Sterling chuckled. "If I coaxed you like this every day, could you handle it?"

"I think I’ll just eat by myself."

She reached for the bowl, but this time Wyatt Sterling didn’t give it to her. He insisted on feeding her himself. There was no other reason; she was just being too slow.

Halfway through her meal, she suddenly heard Wyatt Sterling say something—a single word, to be exact. His voice was soft, but loud enough for her to hear.

"Soon,"

he said.

She looked at him, confused. Just as she opened her mouth to ask what would be soon, a spoonful of wonton was fed into her mouth, blocking her question.

’Oh, he’s telling me to eat faster.’

Alice York finished the wontons in the bowl, but she really couldn’t finish the broth. It was too thick and very savory. She knew it was nutritious, but her stomach only had so much room; any more and she’d be stuffed.

Since she wasn’t drinking it, Wyatt Sterling didn’t let it go to waste, tilting the bowl to his lips and finishing the rest of the broth.

The gesture was so natural, as if they were a couple who had been dating for years.

"Are you just having some broth, Third Uncle?"

Wyatt Sterling gazed at her intently. "I’ve already eaten."

"When?" She didn’t think he would have had dinner before coming to her place.

Wyatt Sterling’s lips curved. "A feast of flesh. Exquisitely delicious."

"..."

She shouldn’t have asked.

"Want more wontons? There’s still some left." Wyatt Sterling wasn’t in a hurry to put the bowl away.

Alice York shook her head, saying she couldn’t eat anymore.

Wyatt Sterling said she ate like a bird, but she retorted, "People with weak stomachs can’t eat too much. Besides, it’s so late. If I can’t digest it, I’ll get acid reflux."

"I suppose I was being inconsiderate."

He put down the spoon. "I’ll have Mason Cheney find a nutritionist for you to interview. You need to get your health in order."

Alice York rejected his kind offer. "There’s no need."

Wyatt Sterling ignored her refusal. "It’s settled. The nutritionist will start within three days. And you, from now on, you will spend your nights at Shorecrest."

"..."

He arranged everything unilaterally, without asking for her opinion even once. It was his accustomed way of exercising control over her.

"Not happy about it?"

Wyatt Sterling reached out and pinched her chin. Her defiance was written all over her face, impossible to ignore.

Alice York turned her head, but she couldn’t shake his hand off no matter how she tried. She couldn’t help but protest, "You never ask what I want, Third Uncle."

Wyatt Sterling leaned closer. "You don’t want to live at Shorecrest?"

She replied, "I don’t."

He said, "Then stay here at West River."

She froze, not expecting him to agree so readily. But before the corners of her lips could even lift into a happy smile, she heard him add, "I’ll stay at West River with you."

"..."

She gave him an unwelcome look. "My temple is too small."

’It can’t possibly house a great Buddha like him!’

Wyatt Sterling pulled his hand back, leaned over, and pushed her down. "It can. It can fit anywhere."

He stared into her eyes. "We’re so compatible, aren’t we?"

"Who’s compatible with you!"

Alice York’s ears flushed red with embarrassment as she struggled to push him away.

Pushing him away was much easier this time. She quickly got out of bed, but the discomfort between her legs made her suck in a sharp breath. He had really been rough with her earlier.

She went out and found her phone. As the screen lit up, multiple WeChat messages popped up from Zoe Jenson, Mindy Vaughn, and also Melody Lancaster.

Her head throbbed. She replied to them one by one.

Melody Lancaster had sent her two messages.

One was: [Did you add them as friends?]

The other was: [Are you getting along?]

Alice hadn’t added those two people at all. She didn’t know if Melody Lancaster was asking deliberately, knowing the truth. She replied that she had been busy in the afternoon and had only just added them.

Melody Lancaster replied quickly: [Well, take your time chatting. If you feel like you click with one of them, be sure to seize the opportunity.]

Alice didn’t reply and turned off her phone screen.

The next second, the screen lit up again. It was a video call from Mindy Vaughn, whom she had just messaged back.

’Another check-up.’

She answered the call. Mindy Vaughn’s face, magnified and close-up, filled the phone screen. "Where are you?"

"West River." She stood sideways, terrified that Wyatt Sterling would suddenly walk into the frame.

Mindy Vaughn asked her, "Why did you take so long to reply to my message?"

Alice lied without batting an eye. "I was exhausted after work, so I lay down to rest for a bit and fell asleep. I just woke up and saw your message."

Mindy Vaughn didn’t even bother to feign doubt and called her out directly. "You’re lying."

Alice composed herself and replied in a very calm tone, "If you say so. I’m not right in front of you, so you can say whatever you want."

Catching sight of Wyatt Sterling coming out of the room from the corner of her eye, she immediately angled her phone further toward the window.

Wyatt Sterling saw her movement and casually beckoned to her with a crooked finger, signaling for her to come over.

Alice pretended not to see and continued her call with Mindy Vaughn. Seeing that she wasn’t coming, Wyatt Sterling started walking toward her with an air that screamed, ’You just wait.’

Alice panicked and quickly said to Mindy Vaughn on the video call, "Mom, whatever it is, let’s talk tomorrow. I’m hanging up."

"Wait, what do you mean you’re hanging up! I still have questions for you. If you dare hang up, I’ll come find you right now!" Mindy Vaughn was always overbearing with Alice.

Alice was incredibly frustrated. Watching Wyatt Sterling get closer and closer, her vision went dark, and she felt like she could just die.

And of all times, that was the moment Mindy Vaughn asked the question: "Who were you with last night?"
