The woman was dressed in luxury brands from head to toe, looking vibrant and exquisite. Her face was impeccably beautiful—a stunning, voluptuous beauty.

Alice knew her.

Her name was Melody Lancaster, the rumored girlfriend who had appeared publicly by Wyatt Sterling’s side countless times over the past two years.

Among the high society rumors about Wyatt Sterling’s love life, Melody Lancaster was the most talked-about. Capable, beautiful, and talented, she had also stayed by Wyatt Sterling’s side the longest. Whenever there was a formal occasion, she was certain to be there with him.

Now, there were even people in high society placing bets, who believed that Melody Lancaster had a high chance of becoming the future Mrs. Sterling.

"You’re the doctor?"

Melody’s gaze fell on Alice in her white coat. Her gentle tone carried a hint of hesitation and a touch of certainty.

She rarely saw such a beautiful female doctor in a hospital.

Alice replied with a neutral expression, "I am."

Melody withdrew her gaze and got straight to the point. "Here’s the situation. My father’s condition has improved, so I’m taking him home now. You can go ahead and remove all that equipment he’s hooked up to."

Alice said nothing. She returned to her seat and pulled out Vernon Lancaster’s medical records.

After reading them, she looked up at Melody and asked, "Does Mr. Lancaster have any prior medical history?"

Melody looked impatient. "No, he doesn’t. Just remove the equipment."

"I’m sorry, but we can’t do that. It’s against hospital regulations. We can’t be held responsible if anything were to happen to Mr. Lancaster after he leaves the hospital," Alice informed her calmly.

Melody looked displeased. "Why do you make it so difficult?"

But Alice asked, "A patient who was admitted to the ICU this morning wants his equipment removed so he can go home and rest by noon. Do you think that’s reasonable?"

Melody’s face turned cold. "And what if I insist on making it reasonable today?"

Alice’s expression didn’t change. "I’m sorry, but it can’t be made reasonable."

Her attitude annoyed Melody, who immediately shot back at her, "Do you have any idea who you’re offending?"

Alice froze for a moment, then retorted, "What’s the difference?"

"Fine. Very good."

Melody suppressed her anger and took out her phone to make a call.

The consultation room was so quiet that Alice could hear the ringing on the other end. After four rings, the call connected.

"Wyatt."

"Let me tell you, this doctor is completely dense. She has no idea how to adjust herself to the situation. I have no idea who hired her..."

Melody’s voice was melodious, and it sounded especially charming when she softly murmured someone’s name.

Images flashed through Alice’s mind. Wyatt Sterling always loved to praise how beautiful her voice sounded in bed. She wondered if he was like that with other women, too. Sometimes, when she didn’t want to make a sound, he always had his ways of wearing her down until she called out willingly.

That teasing push and pull was the worst torture.

Once she gave in, he would hold her close, nuzzling against her ear and temple, and whispered, "Good girl. You sound so lovely when you cry out."’

In the minute that Alice was lost in thought, Melody had already finished her complaint.

"Just wait for your phone to ring," Melody said, and put her phone away.

It was anyone’s guess how Wyatt had coaxed her over the phone, because Melody’s face was all bright smiles, and she didn’t look angry anymore.

Not even thirty seconds later, Alice’s phone rang. It was Director Linden’s number.

Alice answered. "Hello, Director Linden."

Over the phone, Director Linden gave her a few serious instructions. Alice had no grounds to object, so she could only agree. "Okay, I understand."

After ending the call, Alice put down her phone and met Melody’s gaze. "The director just gave me his instructions over the phone. I’ll do as he said."

Melody let out a scornful laugh and turned to leave.

The head nurse, Cassia, gently poked Alice’s arm and said in a low voice, "Since the Director gave the order, the higher-ups will take responsibility even if it’s against the rules. Don’t be so stubborn and make things hard for yourself."

Alice said nothing and got up to go to the intensive care unit.

Vernon Lancaster didn’t look to be in good condition.

Alice leaned over and asked him several times if it was his own decision to be discharged and go home. Vernon was silent for a few seconds before answering, "Yes, I want to go home."

Alice straightened up and glanced at the oxygen saturation monitor beside him. A nurse finally prompted her, "Dr. York, should we remove it now?"

Alice turned around and said. "Go ahead."

When she came out of the ICU, a man and a woman were standing in the hallway. The woman was Melody Lancaster, whom she had just seen a few minutes ago, and the man beside her was...

"Wyatt, that’s the doctor. She was giving me such a hard time earlier." Melody’s expression soured the moment she saw Alice.

Alice hadn’t expected Wyatt Sterling to show up at the hospital so quickly. Perhaps he came with Melody in the first place...

"How did she give you a hard time?" The man’s tone held a hint of amusement, his eyes full of indulgence.

Melody huffed coquettishly and linked her arm with the man’s. "If she hadn’t kept dragging things out, lecturing me about reason and rules, my dad would have been discharged already."

Wyatt glanced at the woman nestled against him. "Is there anything wrong with reason?"

"Well..." Melody’s expression suddenly turned awkward. She couldn’t quite guess what he was thinking.

Wyatt said, "Any reason that makes you unhappy is the wrong one."

Hearing this, Melody’s awkward expression from a second ago blossomed into a smile. She chided him playfully, "Wyatt, you’re terrible scaring me like that."

He had genuinely scared her, and she thought she had said the wrong thing.

Alice forced herself to look away from their flirting. Her stomach, which had finally settled down for the night, started to churn again, and she felt a little nauseous. 𝕗𝕣𝐞𝐞𝘄𝐞𝚋𝚗𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹.𝚌𝕠𝚖

Fearing she might lose her composure on the spot, she started to walk away.

But she had barely taken two steps when she heard the man’s cool, indifferent voice. "Stop right there."

Alice’s steps faltered.

Melody assumed Wyatt had stopped the doctor to stand up for her—for example, by getting the hospital to fire her on a whim.

A doctor that beautiful probably got her job based on her looks, anyway... Melody thought.

"Come here," Wyatt said.

Alice pretended not to hear and continued walking in the other direction.

Wyatt narrowed his long eyes. "Take one more step and see what happens."

Alice stopped.

She really didn’t want to go to him, but it was clear she had no choice. Wyatt’s threats were never just words. He always followed through.

Alice quickly composed herself to appear normal, then turned and walked toward Wyatt and Melody.

The temperature was low today, and Wyatt was wearing a black, thin woolen overcoat. The crisp cut of the coat outlined his tall, imposing figure, and his aloof face looked even more cold and ruthless.

The vibrant and beautiful Melody Lancaster beside him looked just right for him.

Wyatt’s gaze swept over Alice’s face. "What, you left the Sterlings and forgot all the rules, like how to address people?"

Alice straightened her back, met the man’s gaze, and said, "Greetings, Uncle."

That "Uncle" made Melody Lancaster’s face fill with astonishment. "Wyatt, she... she’s your niece?"
