After His Sweetheart Moved In, He Came Home Every Night-Chapter 62: Wyatt Sterling Asks Her If She Prefers a Son or a Daughter
"There’s a lead."
But Wyatt Sterling didn’t elaborate.
He glanced at his watch. The time for her herbal bath was up. He picked up a nearby towel and gestured for her to get out.
Alice York knew that while the herbal bath was beneficial, it wasn’t good to soak for too long.
She got up, rinsed off, and came out after changing. Wyatt Sterling was waiting for her.
"Third Uncle, I’m ready." She approached him, a faint medicinal fragrance wafting from her.
Julian Dalton had told her that the scent from one bath would linger for about three to five days before fading completely. The internal conditioning effects would also become noticeable—that was the magic of these herbal baths.
However, it required several sessions for the effects to be more significant, and there had to be a longer interval between each one.
"I’ll bring you back for another one in a month," he said, walking ahead of her.
Alice was very pleased with the herbal bath and certainly wouldn’t refuse such a good thing, especially since it was for her health. She only mentioned, "If you’ve already arranged it with Mr. Dalton, I can come by myself next time."
Wyatt Sterling turned around, his expression looking quite displeased to Alice. "A single father raising such an adorable, delightful daughter. You think I can rest easy?"
Alice’s slender brows furrowed, and her voice was muffled. "Am I that fickle in your eyes, Third Uncle?"
Wyatt Sterling’s eyes darkened. "You aren’t, but I can’t guarantee others won’t have their eyes on you."
Alice was instantly speechless.
’If I’m not mistaken, is Wyatt Sterling worried that if I come for the herbal baths by myself, I’ll get friendly with Julian Dalton and he’ll take a liking to me?’
"Isn’t Mr. Dalton your good friend, Third Uncle? You don’t even trust him?"
She knew Wyatt Sterling was fiercely possessive. Any woman who was with him could absolutely not get involved with another man. Unless he grew tired of her, she couldn’t easily move on.
’I can’t believe he doesn’t even trust his own best friend.’
"Men know men best. Besides, Yael’s birth mother hasn’t been found yet, so nothing is set in stone." With that, Wyatt Sterling took Alice’s hand to keep her from slipping on the stone path again.
Alice kept close to his side. "But Third Uncle, you just said there was a lead on Yael’s birth mother."
Wyatt Sterling: "An unconfirmed lead."
’So the chances are slim?’
Still, any lead was good news. It was better than hearing nothing for all these years.
"But logically, Mr. Dalton is an outstanding man in every way, and he comes from a good family. Why would Yael’s birth mother leave right after giving birth to her? Did something happen back then? Or were they prevented from being together? Or did they separate because of some conflict..."
She rattled on with a string of questions. After listening, Wyatt Sterling replied, "Your tongue must be quite valuable."
Alice looked confused. "Huh?"
Wyatt Sterling: "I know an organization that specializes in collecting human tongues. Since you talk so much, yours would surely fetch a good price."
Alice immediately clamped her mouth shut.
’Damn him. He’s always scaring me.’
When they reached the exit of the hot spring, Yael’s cheerful laughter could be heard from the small garden ahead. Julian Dalton was sitting nearby, watching over her with a pink thermos of warm water in his hand.
It was late spring, and the small garden was a lush expanse of green. A few butterflies fluttered by, and Yael, utterly fascinated, chased them around without a break.
"Julian Dalton will be going to Silvanus with us this time," Wyatt Sterling said, watching the heartwarming scene in the distance.
Alice immediately guessed, "The lead about Yael’s mother is in Silvanus?"
Wyatt Sterling turned his head to look at her and abruptly asked, "Do you prefer daughters or sons?"
Alice froze. She had never expected Wyatt Sterling would one day ask her this question.
Seeing Alice’s delayed response, Wyatt Sterling said lightly, "I see you’re quite fond of Yael."
’Is he implying that he thinks I like daughters?’
Alice took a deep breath. "I am very fond of Yael. But whether I prefer a daughter or a son will depend on whether I have a daughter or a son in the future."
If I have a boy, I’ll love a boy.
If I have a girl, I’ll love a girl.
...
Julian Dalton had someone prepare lunch, and Alice and Wyatt Sterling ate before returning to the Churchill Family’s residence.
During that time, Alice and Yael got along wonderfully.
Yael, who usually only wanted her father to play with her, now clung to Alice, insisting she play. She even offered Alice her most cherished toy.
Even Julian Dalton was surprised. He said to Wyatt Sterling, who was beside him, "Yael only lets the familiar maids at home hold her. When I occasionally take her out, none of my female friends can get close. Yael is very resistant to them. I never thought she’d be so affectionate with Alice, who she just met today."
Wyatt Sterling wore a sour expression. "It’s not that strange. She’s just good with kids."
Julian Dalton sensed a hint of jealousy. Instead of dropping the subject, he deliberately added, "It’s rare to find a big sister that Yael likes so much. It would be great if she could always be by Yael’s side."
The moment he finished speaking, Wyatt Sterling’s cold, dark eyes narrowed. "You have some plan in mind? Let’s hear it."
"No, no, no." Julian Dalton suppressed a laugh. "I was just saying. I wouldn’t dare have any ideas about Alice."
Wyatt Sterling’s expression softened slightly. "I don’t want to hear that kind of joke a second time."
"Alright, alright, I get it." Julian Dalton understood. He just wouldn’t tease him about it anymore.
But since they were on the topic, Julian Dalton couldn’t resist asking, "You can’t just let things drag on like this, though. What are your plans?"
Wyatt Sterling plucked a small daisy from the flowerbed. "No plans."
"If a flower blooms this beautifully, plenty of people will admire it and want to pick it." After his meaningful remark, Julian Dalton added a reminder, "Hey, hey, hey, don’t ruin my flowers."
Wyatt Sterling stared at the small daisy in his palm, his gaze distant. No one knew what he was thinking at that moment.
When it was time to leave in the afternoon, Yael couldn’t bear to see Alice go. She hugged her leg and wouldn’t let go, not even when Julian Dalton tried to reason with her.
After spending the day with her, Alice had no resistance to Yael’s pleading. She could only look to Wyatt Sterling for help. Without a word, he walked over and simply picked Yael up.
Wyatt Sterling had a forbidding appearance. Most people gave him a wide berth when they saw his cold expression, and children didn’t even dare to look at him. Yael was no exception. Her little lip trembled, on the verge of tears, as she reached out to Julian Dalton. "Daddy, hold me."
Julian Dalton couldn’t help but chuckle as he took Yael back into his arms. "Uncle Wyatt doesn’t eat people. You don’t have to be afraid of him."
Yael wouldn’t listen, burying her face in her father’s chest and sobbing heartbrokenly.
"We’re leaving now." Wyatt Sterling placed a hand on Alice’s back. This was the best time to make their exit.
Julian Dalton nodded, watching them go.
On the way from the Daltons’ home, Alice thought about the scene earlier and shook her head. "You have to try to communicate with children. You can’t just force your way to get what you want without considering their feelings. Third Uncle, if you’re always this overbearing, your own children won’t like you in the future."
Just then, the car pulled up.
Wyatt Sterling reached out and opened the car door. Just as Alice was about to get in, he asked her, "Are you saying you want to have a baby?"
