After His Sweetheart Moved In, He Came Home Every Night-Chapter 51: Wedding on the Agenda
The moment she heard Owen Sterling’s voice, a sharp gaze fell upon Alice York.
She didn’t need to look up to know it was Wyatt Sterling’s.
"Alice? Are you listening? It’s your brother," Owen Sterling said, his voice extremely anxious.
Alice York thought about her call with Mindy Vaughn last night. Mindy had said Owen Sterling would contact her soon. ’I didn’t think it would actually happen, let alone this quickly...’
"Alice? Alice?"
As Owen Sterling anxiously called out for the third time, Alice York finally responded, "I’m listening."
Owen Sterling sighed in relief on the other end. "Why weren’t you talking? Is it a bad time? Is someone with you?"
Alice York slowly lifted her head and glanced at Wyatt Sterling. He had already looked away and was leisurely sipping the fresh soup in front of him.
"Yes... someone’s here," she told Owen Sterling.
The other end of the line fell silent. Alice York didn’t know what to say, either; the questions she wanted to ask, she didn’t dare.
After a moment, Owen Sterling’s voice came through again, much calmer and more composed than before. "Have things been going well at the Churchill Family’s home lately?"
Alice York replied, "They’ve been fine. No one from the Churchill Family has given me any trouble."
Owen Sterling lowered his voice and asked, "Are you scared?"
Alice York answered truthfully, "Sometimes."
Her answer clearly pained him. He gently reassured her, "I promise you, it won’t be for long."
Alice York suddenly clutched her phone tighter, terrified Wyatt Sterling would overhear. She quickly said to Owen Sterling, "Brother, something’s come up. I have to go. I’ll call you when I’m free, okay?"
Owen Sterling naturally picked up on the awkwardness in her tone.
’The Churchills must be with her,’ he guessed.
’This was bad timing. I’ll just have to call back later.’
Owen Sterling replied, "Okay, we’ll talk when you’re free. Take care of yourself over there."
After hanging up, Alice York was about to put her phone down and pretend nothing had happened while she finished her breakfast. But Wyatt Sterling gave her no such peace of mind. In a cold voice, he commanded, "Give me the phone."
Alice York froze.
She looked at him timidly, her expression helpless.
Wyatt Sterling ignored her expression. "Do I have to say it again?"
Alice York didn’t dare test Wyatt Sterling’s patience. Clinging to a sliver of hope, she handed him the phone. Wyatt Sterling took it and called out for Mason Cheney.
"Third Master." Mason Cheney hurried over.
Wyatt Sterling tossed Alice York’s phone to Mason Cheney. "Change the SIM card."
Alice York immediately shot up to snatch her phone back, but Mason Cheney was faster. He quickly put it away, leaving her grabbing at empty air.
"Mason Cheney, give it to me." Alice York’s eyes reddened with panic.
Although Mason Cheney felt sorry for her, he would never disobey Wyatt Sterling’s order. "I’m sorry, Miss Alice, but I can’t give it to you."
Swallowing her anger, Alice York turned to plead with Wyatt Sterling to take back his command. "Third Uncle, I’ve behaved myself all this time. I haven’t had a single thought about running away. My mother knows my situation and has told me to accept my fate. I haven’t said a word to even my best friend. I’ve been so obedient."
Wyatt Sterling looked up, scrutinizing her. "Then how do you explain that call?"
Alice York’s breath hitched. "My brother... he was just worried about me. He wanted to know if I was doing okay here."
Wyatt Sterling’s expression darkened like the surface of the sea before a storm.
She knew his temper well, but sometimes she couldn’t figure him out at all. She didn’t know what, exactly, had set him off.
Not until she heard him ask, "How long have you two been contacting each other in secret?"
"We haven’t been!" she denied it outright.
"Haven’t you?" His tone was clearly skeptical.
Alice York faltered.
Beside them, Mason Cheney shot her a sympathetic glance, which made her heart sink completely.
’The truth is on the tip of my tongue, but he won’t believe me no matter what I say.’
So she simply didn’t answer. Wyatt Sterling didn’t ask again, either. He just reminded Mason Cheney to take out the SIM card.
Alice York clenched her jaw, her face tight, and asked with her back ramrod straight, "Third Uncle, will I get this SIM card back?"
Most people had two SIM cards these days—a primary and a secondary—but she didn’t have that habit. All of her contacts were on this one card.
Wyatt Sterling toyed with the card. "That depends on your behavior."
His words made Alice York’s chest tighten. "And by ’behavior,’ you mean I have to wait until the day I marry into the Churchill Family?"
"We’ll see."
Wyatt Sterling got up and walked out.
After leaving the hilltop villa, Mason Cheney went to a service provider and got a new SIM card with a Washington number.
Wyatt Sterling saved his own number on it first before handing the phone to her. "For now, my number is the only one saved on here. Contact me if you need anything."
Alice York reached for the phone, but Wyatt Sterling didn’t let go. He reminded her in a low voice, "Next time, I’m confiscating the phone."
"Third Uncle, why don’t we just go ahead and schedule my wedding with Kyle Churchill?"
’It’s the same whether I stick my neck out or not, so I might as well get it over with.’
Wyatt Sterling’s expression was unreadable. "What’s the rush?"
She, too, looked resigned. "It’s going to happen sooner or later, isn’t it?"
When they arrived at the Churchill Family’s villa, she got out of the car and limped inside without a backward glance.
The car window rolled up. Mason Cheney looked back and asked, "Third Master, are we still going back to Silvanus today?"
The original plan was to return to Silvanus yesterday. They were already on the way to the airport when they changed their itinerary after receiving Alice York’s call.
Wyatt Sterling didn’t say whether they were going back or not, just told him to drive.
The weather was better today than yesterday. When Alice York got back, she saw Kyle Churchill feeding the fish—the few arapaimas his father was raising.
Having learned her lesson from the last scare, Alice York didn’t get too close. Seeing her return, Kyle Churchill looked displeased. "How are you back so soon?"
Alice York glanced at the fish in the foam box. "What did you expect? Did Young Mr. Churchill think I’d be hospitalized for a few days?"
Kyle Churchill said, "You should have stayed for at least a week, like I did."
"Then I’m afraid I have to disappoint Young Mr. Churchill. It was just a minor ligament sprain. It’s fine now that it’s been reset."
After saying that, Alice York even took a couple of steps in front of him, which infuriated Kyle Churchill.
"Don’t be mad, Young Mr. Churchill. Come here, I want to show you something." Alice York smiled and beckoned to him. 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮
Kyle Churchill frowned. "Show me what?"
Alice York replied, "Just come over here."
Dubiously, Kyle Churchill walked over. "Where is it?"
"Here."
At some point, Alice York had grabbed a fish from the foam box. Before Kyle Churchill could react, she tossed it at him.
Startled, Kyle Churchill stumbled back, flailing one arm around and nearly hitting Alice York. His other arm, the one in the cast, didn’t move an inch.
’Even as an instinctual reaction, it couldn’t move!’
"What is wrong with you?" Kyle Churchill cursed after regaining his footing, furious that Alice York had just tricked him.
Alice York shrugged and smiled, saying with deliberate emphasis, "I’m not Uncle Sterling’s biological child, so of course there’s nothing wrong with me."
Kyle Churchill froze for a second.
His face immediately darkened as he glared at her. "Alice York, what do you mean by that? Are you gloating?"
"I don’t mean anything by it, and I wouldn’t dare gloat. I’m just curious..." Alice York stared intently at Kyle Churchill. "Young Mr. Churchill, do you happen to have an identical twin brother? Or any brother at all?"
The person who had knocked her down last night looked exactly like Kyle Churchill. But that person had been perfectly fine—he was definitely not the Kyle Churchill standing in front of her!
