After His Sweetheart Moved In, He Came Home Every Night-Chapter 188: Suspected and Accused of Lying
Their lips parted, and Alice York quickly pulled the blanket over her face. A small smile played on Wyatt Sterling’s lips. He gently patted her slender shoulder and then stood up.
By the window, Wyatt Sterling turned around. "Speak."
Mason Cheney nodded and then reported everything he had found in detail. The more he heard, the deeper Wyatt Sterling’s brow furrowed.
"That Chase Jennings is one of Eldest Young Master Hawthorne’s men. He’s already investigated Miss Alice’s background once before, but for some reason, he’s investigating it again. And this time, he’s being blatant about it, asking Miss Alice directly."
Mason Cheney found this puzzling as well.
Wyatt Sterling’s face turned cold. "He’s being blatant to send me a message."
Mason Cheney asked, "So, Eldest Young Master Hawthorne’s big move this time is to test you, Third Master?"
Wyatt Sterling glanced back at Alice York, then raised his hand, gesturing for Mason Cheney to leave.
After Mason Cheney left the hospital room, Wyatt Sterling returned to the bedside. Alice York clutched the blanket, her knees bent, looking up at him with wide, expectant eyes.
He hadn’t stepped out to talk, which meant he didn’t intend to keep it from her. "You heard all that?"
Alice York nodded.
Wyatt Sterling said, "Why is Felix Hawthorne investigating you? It might be a show for me, or it might be for some other reason."
"But..."
She was about to speak when he cut her off. "Don’t talk. Just listen to me."
"..."
Wyatt Sterling stood by the bed. "Don’t go running around lately. Stay put in Arden. As for the task the old master gave you, I’m here. You don’t have to be afraid of anything."
’He’s here...’
’Isn’t this what she had been waiting for him to say...?’
Alice York thought of her phone call with Owen Sterling last night. She hadn’t been able to go back today as planned. It seemed she’d have to tell him later, and also about moving her grandparents.
"Get some sleep." Wyatt Sterling pulled over a chair and sat down, planning to stay with her, to watch over her.
Alice York didn’t move. She wasn’t the least bit sleepy.
Wyatt Sterling asked, "Do you want me to sleep with you?"
Alice York shook her head. "No."
She quickly scooted down to lie flat, mindful of the IV needle on the back of her hand. But the moment she lay down, Wyatt Sterling had already leaned over to pull the blanket for her, making sure it didn’t touch the IV needle.
After she was settled, he even adjusted it for her.
Alice York saw it all, a bittersweet feeling washing over her. As he started to stand up, she called out to him softly, "Third Uncle."
Wyatt Sterling gazed at her calmly, not telling her to be quiet this time.
Alice York said in a stuffy voice, "In the future, when you’re angry, can you not be so fierce with me? And not say hurtful things?"
Wyatt Sterling sat back down without a word.
Lying on her side, Alice York continued, "I can only convince myself that you said those things to me yesterday because you were in a bad mood. That you didn’t answer my calls because you were in a bad mood. That it was because..."
"That’s enough."
Wyatt Sterling interrupted her.
Alice York’s lips trembled in grievance, and tears began to well up in her eyes.
Wyatt Sterling couldn’t bear to see her expression. He closed his eyes and pressed his fingers firmly against the bridge of his nose. "Talk less, rest more. How many times do I have to say it?"
The tears in Alice York’s eyes finally escaped, running down her temples and dripping onto the pillow, soaking a dark patch.
’She didn’t want to cry.’
’But the tears wouldn’t stop.’
She wiped and wiped, soaking a large part of her sleeve, until her wrist was caught. She opened her eyes to see the man right in front of her.
He used a tissue to wipe her tears, taking the place of her sleeve. "I know."
Alice York fell silent and stopped crying, staring at him blankly.
There was a hint of a smile in Wyatt Sterling’s voice. "I said I know. It won’t happen again."
’He knew that if he didn’t say this, this girl would be upset for a whole day and night, and then continue to be mad at him even after she’d thought things through.’
"Don’t cry. If you keep crying, your throat won’t get better." He pulled the tissue away. It was damp with a few tears. He tossed it directly into the trash can, not planning to pull out a second one.
Alice York’s eyes were bright, as if they’d been washed with water. "And don’t ignore my calls."
Wyatt Sterling agreed. "Mm."
’The gloom finally lifted. Talking things out was better than anything. No more hiding my feelings and endlessly guessing, holding in frustration over things I couldn’t figure out—a feeling I could neither swallow nor spit out.’
Perhaps because she had spoken too much, Alice York’s throat grew more swollen and sore. Wyatt Sterling didn’t let her speak anymore, watching over her and making her get a good sleep.
「When she next awoke, it was already afternoon.」
If she hadn’t been so hungry, Alice York figured she could have slept until nightfall. She lifted her hand; the IV needle had been removed at some point. She was now alone in the hospital room.
She picked up the phone from the bedside table and checked it. No messages or calls. ’Third Uncle must be busy with something. Should I go back to the Sawyer Family’s house, then?’
KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK—
Just as she was thinking, there was a knock on the door.
Alice York looked up and saw Rosalind Sawyer and Rhea Sterling standing at the door.
"Alice."
Rhea Sterling entered the hospital room a step ahead of Rosalind Sawyer.
Alice York subtly put her phone down. "Rhea, Grandma, what are you guys doing here?"
"To see you, of course."
Rhea Sterling came closer to get a good look at Alice York’s condition and said with compassion, "You look so worn out."
Alice York raised a hand to her face. "Really?" 𝕗𝗿𝕖𝐞𝐰𝗲𝕓𝐧𝕠𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝐨𝚖
Rhea Sterling laughed. "Just teasing. You don’t look worn out at all. You have great color, and your lips are so red and full, almost like you’ve just been kissed."
Alice York’s heart clenched. "You really know how to joke."
Rhea Sterling giggled nonstop. Rosalind Sawyer came up from behind her and said, "Don’t make those kinds of jokes with your sister."
Rhea Sterling’s laughter faltered. She quickly realized and made way for Rosalind Sawyer.
Rosalind Sawyer shot Rhea Sterling a glance. "Your sister doesn’t even have a boyfriend. How could you make a joke like that to her!"
Rhea Sterling looked embarrassed. "I know, I won’t do it again."
Rosalind Sawyer withdrew her gaze and turned to Alice York, her face now wreathed in a gentle smile. "Alice, are you feeling better?"
’I believe Rosalind Sawyer is on the same side as the old master and his wife. Since the old master knows I was trying to escape, how could Rosalind not know? She’s just not calling me out on it directly.’
"Much better." ’At least my throat doesn’t hurt as much after that sleep.’
Alice York got out of bed to pull over a chair.
Rosalind Sawyer said, "Don’t trouble yourself. I’m not sitting. I have a beauty appointment and have to leave soon."
Rhea Sterling asked, "I heard Third Uncle brought you to the hospital. Why were you out so early in the morning, and how did you happen to run into him? Were you going somewhere?"
Alice York turned to Rhea Sterling and said with a smile, "Where could I possibly go? I was just bored and wanted to go for a walk. I happened to run into Third Uncle as he was coming back. I wasn’t feeling well, so Third Uncle had someone bring me to the hospital."
Although she wasn’t telling the truth, Rosalind Sawyer definitely knew.
As for Rhea Sterling, those words were meant for her.
And Rhea Sterling did indeed believe her. "You shouldn’t run around when you’re sick. It’s a good thing Third Uncle had a rare moment of kindness this time and didn’t just leave you."
Alice York hummed in agreement.
Just then, Rosalind Sawyer spoke up. "Yara, go ask the doctor if Alice can be discharged now."
"Oh, okay. I’ll go ask right now."
When Rosalind Sawyer gave the order, Rhea Sterling didn’t delay for a second, immediately turning to find the doctor.
Once Rhea Sterling was gone, only Alice York and Rosalind Sawyer were left in the room.
Alice York’s intuition told her that Rosalind Sawyer had sent Rhea Sterling away so she could talk to her alone.
Sure enough, Rosalind Sawyer slowly walked up to her and asked in a sharp tone, "Did you really just happen to run into Wyatt on his way back to the Sawyer Family’s house?"
Alice York’s heart pounded like a drum, but she maintained a calm expression. "Yes."
Rosalind Sawyer’s expression suddenly turned harsh. "You’re lying."
