After His Sweetheart Moved In, He Came Home Every Night-Chapter 163: Confirming Her Identity, He Is Full of Expectation
"That’s impossible."
Alice York feigned composure. "He was drinking last night, and his neuralgia flared up. I told him to get some more rest, so he’s not up yet."
"And his assistant?"
"Mhm."
"Is that really true?" Finn Hawthorne was clearly skeptical.
"Of course it is."
Just as she said that, the phone in Alice York’s pocket rang. She took it out and saw it was a call from Wyatt Sterling.
She stepped away from Finn Hawthorne to answer the call, whispering his name. "Third Uncle."
The man’s deep voice came through the receiver. "Go open the back door of the car. There’s a phone there."
Alice York said, "Not the back seat, it was in the passenger seat. It’s my phone. I already have it. I’m talking to you on it right now."
Wyatt Sterling chuckled softly. "I know. I put it there. The one in the back seat is Finn Hawthorne’s."
’Finn Hawthorne’s phone is in the back seat?’
She glanced back and saw Finn Hawthorne standing in the distance, staring at her. His gaze sent a shiver down her spine. She quickly asked Wyatt Sterling, "And I’m supposed to give him his phone?"
"Mhm."
’How can he be so calm?’ 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞
She couldn’t help but complain, "You just up and left, leaving me here with him. Ever since I saw that text, I’ve been on edge, terrified he’d find out you two were gone. What if he sees I’m all alone and tries to get revenge on me again?"
Wyatt Sterling said, "He won’t."
Alice York paused. "...You’re so sure?"
Wyatt Sterling replied, "Give him the phone from the back seat. You’ll understand after he takes a call."
"Really?" she asked, still skeptical.
Wyatt Sterling let out a soft, low laugh. "Don’t you trust me?"
"I do... and I don’t." Alice York’s tone was still laced with complaint. "You left in the middle of the night without telling me. I was looking all over for you when I woke up."
Wyatt Sterling said, "Sorry, it was urgent."
Alice York giggled. "Alright, I forgive you. But don’t do it again."
Wyatt Sterling hummed a faint reply. Over the past two days, Alice York had been completely enveloped in his sweet gestures, her mood a syrupy bliss from morning till night, leaving her oblivious to anything unusual.
After hanging up, she went outside to get the phone.
Finn Hawthorne eagerly followed her out, bursting with questions. "Were you just on the phone with Wyatt Sterling? He’s gone, right? And his assistant is gone, too? So it’s just the two of us now?"
Alice York didn’t answer him. She pulled open the back door of the car, and sure enough, a phone was sitting there.
Finn Hawthorne had sharp eyes and even quicker hands. He snatched the phone before Alice York could grab it.
"Holy crap! This is my phone!" Finn Hawthorne’s face lit up with surprise.
Alice York didn’t try to grab it back, since it was for him anyway. "Yes, it’s yours. Wyatt Sterling told me to give it to you. He said someone would be calling you soon."
’Though she had no idea who would be calling Finn Hawthorne.’
’But Wyatt Sterling probably wouldn’t lie to her. After Finn Hawthorne took this call, he wouldn’t bother her anymore.’
"Calling me? Is it Wyatt Sterling?" Just as Finn Hawthorne asked the question, the phone’s screen lit up with an incoming call.
When he saw the caller ID, his expression shifted. He stepped aside to answer.
Alice York noticed that the moment Finn Hawthorne saw the caller ID, his expression turned dead serious, losing all of his usual nonchalant swagger.
’Was it really Wyatt Sterling?’
She quietly edged closer to eavesdrop.
"Brother," Finn Hawthorne said.
"Finn, are you alright over there?" Felix Hawthorne’s voice was deep and steady, as it always was. His emotions never seemed to fluctuate.
’And it seemed he knew exactly where Finn Hawthorne was.’
Finn Hawthorne felt a prickle in his nose. "Not really."
Felix Hawthorne asked, "Did someone give you a hard time?"
Finn Hawthorne wanted to say yes, but that would sound too unmanly. He hemmed and hawed for a moment before saying, "It’s fine. It’s bearable."
Felix Hawthorne said with a laugh, "Our Finn has never been the type to suffer in silence."
’That’s a big brother for you.’
’He knows his little brother best.’
Finn Hawthorne felt much better. He remembered the news from last night about his sister and said, "Brother, there’s news about our sister."
"Yes, I know."
Felix Hawthorne’s tone was still perfectly calm.
Finn Hawthorne, on the other hand, was anything but calm. He asked urgently, "Brother, you really know? Has it been confirmed?"
"It’s not confirmed yet, not that quickly," Felix Hawthorne said. "I just met with Wyatt Sterling. He provided some very helpful information."
"Wyatt Sterling?" Finn Hawthorne’s voice jumped a few octaves.
Eavesdropping nearby, Alice York jumped. ’Why did he suddenly shout Wyatt Sterling’s name like that?’
"Brother, you believe him?" ’Something’s not right,’ Finn Hawthorne thought. ’This isn’t how I thought it would go.’
"Calm down."
After a moment of silence, Felix Hawthorne’s voice came through again. "The information Wyatt Sterling provided this time is very helpful. Although it indirectly came from you, we wouldn’t have obtained such a crucial lead if he hadn’t been suspicious enough to press for details."
Finn Hawthorne fell silent.
’It was undeniable. Wyatt Sterling had been the first to learn this information, and for the Hawthorne Family, it was incredibly important.’
’He thought about Wyatt Sterling bringing him to this small town. He’d been convinced it was to get revenge, to torture him.’
’But now that he thought about it... had Wyatt Sterling already figured everything out?’
’Is Alice York his sister?’
’Though, for now, that was just his own speculation.’
"We need to verify everything. I’ll call you again once it’s confirmed," Felix Hawthorne said. "Come back as soon as you can."
"Got it," Finn Hawthorne replied.
After ending the call, Finn Hawthorne turned around. Alice York quickly averted her gaze, pretending she hadn’t been listening.
"Alice York!" he called out, his tone serious.
Alice York looked at him. "Yes?"
Finn Hawthorne clutched his phone and walked nervously up to Alice York. "Now, we just have to wait for the results."
Alice York was completely baffled. "What results?"
"I can’t tell you yet. The results aren’t in, after all." Finn Hawthorne grinned. "But you’ll find out soon enough."
Alice York scoffed, not at all curious.
At three in the afternoon, Alice York finished packing and said her goodbyes to the old couple.
The old couple was very sad to see her go, knowing it would be another year, or even two, before they saw her again.
The old woman held Alice York’s hand. "If you and Wyatt set a wedding date, you have to let us know."
Alice York gave an embarrassed smile. "Grandma, we’re not even close to that yet."
Finn Hawthorne chimed in, "Exactly. He’s not worthy."
The smile on Alice York’s face twitched. She shot him a glare.
Finn Hawthorne shrugged. "I’m just telling it like it is."
’He couldn’t say certain things out loud right now, not before it was confirmed. He had no right. But once they confirmed Alice York was his sister, Wyatt Sterling better get the hell away from her and never come near her again!’
The old woman let go of Alice York’s hand. "That thing you wanted to know... we’ll be sure to tell you the next time you come back."
Alice York was touched. "Okay."
The old woman added, "And take care."
Alice York blinked back tears and waved goodbye to the old couple. After she got in the car, the old man came over and said, "Little Girl, don’t blame Mindy. She had her reasons."
Alice York assumed the old man was telling her not to blame Mindy Vaughn for neglecting her all these years.
To put the old couple at ease, she had no choice but to promise she wouldn’t blame Mindy Vaughn.
Finn Hawthorne snorted coldly and muttered to himself, "She was plenty harsh to my sister all these years. Once those results come in and it’s confirmed, she’ll have it coming."
