After His Sweetheart Moved In, He Came Home Every Night-Chapter 143: I’m Going to Die Here Today
On the other end of the line, Finn Hawthorne was silent.
He admitted he had always been arrogant and was certainly spoiled rotten by the Hawthorne Family. He got whatever he wanted. In school, his classmates called him a bully who took pleasure in tormenting others.
But no matter how arrogant he was, he had never taken a life.
His goal with this stunt was just to scare Alice York, lock her up for a while, and teach her a lesson.
He was stunned when Alice York asked if he was going to kill her.
"Why so quiet, Young Young Master Hawthorne?" ’He must have run out of patience with me,’ Alice York thought.
After a long pause, Finn Hawthorne finally squeezed out, "You just wait!"
Alice York furrowed her brow. "I’m right here, aren’t I? It’s not like I can run away."
She could tell Finn Hawthorne’s tone wasn’t particularly vicious, but she couldn’t rule out the possibility that he was a sinister person—the type to kill without a sound. After all, she didn’t really know him.
A few seconds later, she heard Finn Hawthorne instruct the two men, "Proceed with the original plan."
With that, the call ended.
The two men put away the phone and walked toward Alice York.
Alice York quickly backed away to Mindy Vaughn’s side. Mindy’s face was pale with fear. She gripped Alice’s hand tightly, her voice trembling. "Alice, are they going to kill us?"
Alice wasn’t sure herself, but she tried to comfort Mindy first. "This is a hospital. No matter how lawless the Hawthornes are, they wouldn’t dare do anything reckless here."
But her words offered Mindy Vaughn no comfort. She knew all too well the extent of the Hawthorne Family’s power—there was nothing they couldn’t handle.
"Miss York, Young Master Hawthorne’s instructions are for you to come with us. If you do, we’ll let her go," one of the men said, pointing at Mindy Vaughn.
Alice York gritted her teeth. "Do you mean it?"
The man nodded but offered no guarantees. The Young Master could, after all, change his mind at any moment.
Alice York held out her hand. "Give me my phone."
The man shook his head. "Not right now. Someone will stay here and watch her. She’ll be released tomorrow. You’re coming with us."
Alice York didn’t hesitate for long before relenting. "Fine. I’ll go with you."
As soon as she spoke, Mindy Vaughn yanked her hand. "Alice, no! You can’t go with them! What if they really mean to hurt you...?"
"There’s no way I can escape. All that matters is that you’re safe." Alice York bent down slightly, pried Mindy Vaughn’s fingers from her hand, and whispered, "Find a way to escape. Don’t count on me."
’She can’t rely on me if I’m dead.’
With that, Alice York turned to the man. "Lead the way."
The man grabbed one of her wrists and warned, "I trust you won’t do anything stupid. The price, after all, would be your mother’s life."
A shiver ran through Alice York. She clenched her jaw. "I know."
"Alice... Alice..." Mindy Vaughn tried to get out of bed, but another person immediately stepped toward her.
Terrified, Mindy Vaughn froze, not daring to move another inch.
Outside the hospital, the man roughly shoved Alice York into a car.
She didn’t dare try any tricks; she couldn’t afford to gamble with Mindy Vaughn’s life. After half an hour, the car stopped at an abandoned brick factory.
They pulled Alice York from the car and shoved her into the factory. She stumbled repeatedly, almost falling several times, but the men showed no pity. They trussed her up, tying her securely to a chair.
Alice York scanned her surroundings. Discarded bricks were piled everywhere on the ground, which was overgrown with weeds. A foul, rotten smell hung in the air. She looked up. The factory roof was riddled with holes, and there was a particularly large one directly above her chair. ’If it rains,’ she thought, ’I can’t imagine how soaked I’ll get...’
"Is it tight?"
the man asked his accomplice.
The accomplice straightened up. "Tight. She won’t be able to get free."
The man nodded in satisfaction. He then took out his phone, recorded a short video of Alice York, and sent it to Finn Hawthorne to show the job was done.
Once that was done, the man said to Alice York, "We’re not going to kill you. You’ll just spend one night here. Someone will come untie you tomorrow morning. Young Master Hawthorne said this is his way of teaching you a lesson. Provoke him again, and it won’t be something as simple as this."
Alice York remained silent.
’So after all that, they’re just tying me up here to scare me for a night.’
’But this place is so secluded. Who knows if vagrants use it for shelter at night, or people doing... other things. My life is still on the line.’
"Job’s done. Let’s go." The man pocketed his phone and turned to leave.
The accomplice followed him, a lecherous grin on his face. "When I was tying her up, I felt her skin. It’s so smooth and soft. And pale. I noticed her chest is pretty big, too, and don’t even get me started on her face. She’s a real knockout, isn’t she? Why don’t we..."
Before the accomplice could finish, the man smacked him on the back of the head. "Are you trying to get yourself killed? We do what Young Master Hawthorne tells us to do. You get any funny ideas, and you’ll find yourself dead real quick."
The accomplice wasn’t happy to hear that. "She already offended Young Master Hawthorne. Why would he care what we do to her?"
The man raised his hand again sharply.
The accomplice immediately backtracked. "Okay, okay, I’ll drop it."
The two of them left, one after the other.
Alice York breathed a sigh of relief. ’I heard that man’s lustful comments and thought they were both in on it. Thank god the other one has some principles, otherwise... I can’t imagine what would have happened next...’
Just as they were leaving, Alice York started to think. ’Maybe I don’t have to wait until tomorrow. I could probably drag this chair out of here...’ But then she heard the door being locked!
’...’
’Am I really going to die here tonight?’
’No. I can’t just sit here and wait to die.’
Once they were long gone, Alice York started dragging the chair slowly toward the entrance. The distance didn’t seem great, but it took her nearly ten minutes to reach the door. With all her might, she slammed her body and the chair against it.
Despite how old the door looked, it didn’t budge an inch.
After a few tries, Alice York was exhausted and drenched in sweat.
’Damn that Finn Hawthorne!’
Gritting her teeth, she dragged the chair away to search for another exit, hoping to find a tool to cut the ropes along the way.
「Meanwhile, Wyatt Sterling had arrived at Rhovan Airport.」
As soon as he got off the plane, he switched off airplane mode.
His call with Alice York had been cut short because he was on the plane. It had been about to take off, and a flight attendant had cautiously reminded him, so he’d had no choice but to hang up.
He saw several missed calls and assumed Alice York had called him back. But when he opened his call log, his expression instantly turned cold.
He called the number back. Someone picked up immediately. The first words he heard were, "Third Master, something’s happened to Miss Alice."
...
By now, Alice York was so exhausted she could barely breathe.
The door wouldn’t budge, and the windows were too high. After searching for a long time, she still hadn’t found anything that could cut the ropes. ’Even if I try to fray the ropes with these bricks, it’ll be dark before I get through them.’ She felt discouraged, but she couldn’t resign herself to spending the night here. That would be even more dangerous.
Just as she was running out of ideas, her luck ran out completely. She toppled over, chair and all, landing hard on the ground. Now her movement was even more restricted.
From this angle, she faced the window.
She was drenched in sweat, but her gaze was fixed on the window. ’Even though I’m Vincent Hawthorne’s savior, Finn Hawthorne still dared to do this to me,’ she thought bitterly. ’They came here supposedly to thank me, but instead, they’ve left me in this miserable state...’
SHUFFLE... SHUFFLE... SHUFFLE...
With her ear pressed to the ground, she could hear the footsteps even more clearly.
Alice York tensed. ’Are my kidnappers back? Or is it someone else?’
Fear of the unknown surged through her, and her breathing grew ragged. Just as she was struggling desperately to get up, a sudden pounding came from the door.
The blows were heavy and relentless, one after another.
