After His Sweetheart Moved In, He Came Home Every Night-Chapter 135: What a Heartwarming Scene
Alice York really didn’t want to argue with Mindy Vaughn.
But she hadn’t finished speaking, so she forced herself to continue. "I can’t predict the future. I don’t know what will happen on this trip to Arden, so I’m planning to go back to Rhovan tomorrow to see my grandparents."
As expected, Mindy Vaughn refused. "No. You are not allowed to go back."
Alice stated flatly, "You can’t stop me this time."
"You..."
Before Mindy could say anything else, Alice walked straight inside, not intending to engage with her further.
Everyone was seated in the dining room.
Nearly everyone from the Sterling family had arrived. Aside from Rosalind Sawyer, who was still in Arden, the first branch of the family was all there—even Rhea Sterling, who rarely came home.
This was Rhea Sterling, Owen Sterling’s younger sister. She was already engaged and living with her fiancé. The wedding was scheduled for the end of the year, and preparations were already underway. It was rumored to be a grand affair.
Rhea and Owen Sterling walked in together. Rhea was the first to call out,
"Grandpa."
As soon as she entered the dining room, she hurried over to Old Master Sterling, making her presence felt.
"Rhea, you’re back too."
Old Master Sterling chuckled and held out his hand. Rhea took it, and he patted it gently while looking over her shoulder.
There was no one behind her except for Owen Sterling.
Old Master Sterling asked, "Why didn’t you bring Kenneth back with you?"
"Kenneth is busy; he couldn’t make it." Rhea leaned down, a mischievous look on her face. "Aren’t you happier to see me than to see Kenneth?"
"You, you... Grandpa was just asking. It’s been a while since I’ve seen the two of you together," Old Master Sterling said with a kind, gentle expression.
Rhea smiled brightly. "You haven’t seen us because you’re always at home. Kenneth and I are together every day. We’re getting sick of the sight of each other."
Old Master Sterling replied, "What kind of talk is that? When two people are together, their feelings only grow deeper. How could you be getting sick of each other?"
Owen Sterling walked up from behind them. "There’s a saying: ’distance makes the heart grow fonder.’"
"That makes sense." Rhea nodded in agreement. "I’ll go pack my things and move back in."
At this, the smile on Old Master Sterling’s face froze. "You silly girl, are you joking or are you serious?"
Rhea pouted. "If I say I’m moving back, does that mean Grandpa won’t welcome me?"
"Of course you’re welcome, it’s just that you and Kenneth..." Old Master Sterling sensed something was wrong. "Tell Grandpa the truth. Did you have another fight with Kenneth?"
Rhea didn’t say a word. Her silence was an admission.
"You young people..." Old Master Sterling sighed. "Never mind, never mind. Grandpa won’t lecture you. If you want to move back, then move back. Stay until you feel like moving out again. Your happiness is what’s most important."
"I knew you were the best, Grandpa." Rhea threw her arms around Old Master Sterling’s shoulders and nuzzled her head against him.
As everyone else watched this scene unfold, their expressions varied.
"See? Being related by blood really makes a difference. Such a heartwarming scene," Jean Hawthorne said meaningfully, her chin resting on her hand.
Finn Hawthorne glanced up at Alice, saw her usual composure, and smirked. "The one who isn’t blood-related doesn’t care at all."
Vincent Hawthorne spoke up. "You two, shut your mouths."
Finn slowly turned his head, a deep smile playing on his lips. "You can tell her what to do, Uncle Vincent, but you can’t tell me what to do."
Vincent Hawthorne was left speechless.
Under the table, Mindy Vaughn grabbed Alice’s hand, trying to offer some comfort. Alice understood her mother’s intention. She wanted to say it wasn’t necessary, but given the setting, she kept quiet.
’She was long used to it. Her heart was completely unperturbed.’
Silas Sterling also made a show of it, placing a hand on Alice’s shoulder. "Alice, you should come home and stay more often, too."
Just then, Rhea looked over. "Yes, yes! Alice, you should come back and stay more often. I have so much I want to share with you."
Alice returned a faint smile. "Okay."
At the same time, Owen’s gaze also shifted to Alice. He had spent the afternoon picking Rhea up and didn’t know what had happened at the old mansion. He had only just heard bits and pieces.
Owen’s eyes moved to Finn Hawthorne. As if sensing the look, Finn glanced back at him.
Their eyes met. Owen’s held a warning, while Finn simply raised his eyebrows in provocation.
Another person entered through the doorway.
Seeing it was Wyatt Sterling, Jean Hawthorne’s eyes lit up.
Beside her, Finn Hawthorne reminded her, "Wipe your drool. It’s too obvious."
Jean Hawthorne’s face fell. "None of your business."
"Third Uncle!"
When Rhea called out to him, her smile was exceptionally bright.
A rare smile touched Wyatt Sterling’s lips. "Rhea, you’re back too."
"Yeah, it’s been a while." Rhea quickly made space for him. "Third Uncle, sit here."
Wyatt Sterling undid the button at his waist and sat down.
His seat was directly across from Alice, and his gaze naturally fell on her face.
Alice ignored him.
"Owen, come sit here." Mindy Vaughn stood up and eagerly pulled out the chair next to Alice, gesturing for Owen to take it.
Owen looked at Alice, then walked over with a smile. "Thank you, Aunt Mindy."
"Don’t be so formal. We’re all family." Mindy’s intentions were practically written all over her face.
But before Owen could sit down, Rhea came over and tugged on his sleeve. "Brother, let me sit there. I want to sit next to Alice."
Owen didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. "Fine, you sit next to Alice."
Mindy’s expression darkened, but she didn’t dare lash out. Instead, she had to force a smile. "Come on, Rhea. Sit here."
"Thank you, Aunt Mindy." Rhea sat down without hesitation.
Alice stole a glance at Mindy’s face and couldn’t help but curve her lips into a smile. She turned to Rhea and said, "It’s been a long time since we’ve sat together for a meal."
"It has been a long time. That’s why I’ve decided to live at home until the wedding. We can eat together every day," Rhea said.
Alice just smiled, not actually agreeing.
The meal was especially lively. With so many people, the atmosphere was good. Vincent Hawthorne and Old Master Sterling got along very well, and the conversation throughout dinner was dominated by topics from the older generation.
During the meal, Vincent Hawthorne would occasionally bring up Alice. In this kind of setting, Alice couldn’t just play dumb; she would respond appropriately to show the Hawthornes due respect.
After dinner.
Alice lingered, wanting to find an opportunity to talk to Old Master Sterling about returning to Rhovan.
But she waited and waited, and their conversation showed no signs of ending.
Seeing that it was almost eight o’clock, Alice gave up. As she turned to leave, she ran into Owen Sterling, who hadn’t left yet. He called out, "Alice."
Alice addressed him politely but distantly, "Owen."
Owen explained, "I was picking Rhea up this afternoon, so I didn’t know what happened at the mansion. I heard they ganged up on you."
Alice shook her head. "Owen, it wasn’t that serious."
"Those two siblings tried to force you to kneel and apologize. How can you say it wasn’t serious?" Owen said, suppressing his anger.
Before Alice could say anything, Finn’s mocking voice came from the side. "Tattling, are we, sister?"
Alice looked up at Finn and said coolly, "I’m not your sister."
Finn tsked, a hint of frustrated anger in his eyes. "I was just being polite, and you actually took it seriously? You? Are you even worthy?"
Alice smiled as she retorted, "Of course I’m worthy. But I would never have a brother like you."
For some reason, Finn’s eyelid twitched.
