Chapter 106: Chapter 106: He Said He Would Protect Her for a Lifetime

Alice York really did like this hair tie.

It was simple, plain, and inexpensive—and it suited her taste perfectly.

But it was only when she noticed the hair tie had its own special logo and came in overly exquisite packaging that she belatedly realized she had been too naive.

This was neither plain nor cheap.

Wyatt Sterling said, "If you like it that much, I’ll buy you a few more next time so you can rotate them."

In his eyes, if Alice York liked something, he would give her all of them—so many she wouldn’t even know which one to pick.

Alice York silently placed the hair tie back in its box before saying, "I don’t like it that much. Third Uncle, please don’t buy me any more in the future."

The smile on Wyatt Sterling’s lips faded. "Didn’t you like it just a moment ago?"

Alice’s hand rested on the box, her fingertips gently caressing it. "My judgment was poor just now. I thought it was a worthless hair tie."

"Worthless..."

Wyatt Sterling let out a humorless laugh, his expression instantly turning ice-cold.

"How fond are you of worthless things? Is being cheap really that great?"

Alice met Wyatt Sterling’s sarcastic gaze. "Perhaps it’s because I’m a cheap person myself. Being with someone as noble as you, Third Uncle, I often worry I’ll tarnish your good name."

Having spent so much time with him, Alice knew exactly how to provoke Wyatt Sterling.

No yelling, no arguing—all she had to do was lay the praise on thick with sarcasm, and she could make the veins on his forehead pop in minutes.

Her last sentence had an immediate effect. The look Wyatt Sterling gave her was so full of anger he seemed to wish he could strangle her.

"Alice York, if I don’t die a natural death, it’ll be because you angered me to it."

Wyatt Sterling ground out the words through clenched teeth.

Alice tilted her head to look at him and said with a straight face, "Third Uncle, you shouldn’t say such unlucky things. They might come true."

"..."

The atmosphere fell silent.

The pressure inside the car became more suffocating than ever.

Alice suddenly found it hard to breathe and tactfully scooted closer to Wyatt Sterling. "Third Uncle will definitely live to be a hundred."

Wyatt Sterling snorted coldly, his expression sour.

Alice leaned her head against him in an intimate gesture. "I was just kindly reminding you, Third Uncle, not to say things that are bad luck for yourself."

Wyatt Sterling eyed her fake display coldly. "If I died, you’d be the happiest."

Alice looked up. "I won’t."

The two words escaped her lips, both firm and sincere.

Wyatt Sterling was still fuming. "Of course you won’t. If you dared to look too happy, they’d definitely find out you were the culprit who angered me to death."

"..."

Alice’s voice turned soft and sweet, trying to appease him. "Third Uncle, I was wrong."

Wyatt Sterling turned to look out the window, ignoring her.

The car drove smoothly down the main road. As traffic merged in from both sides, the speed slowed. Mason Cheney suddenly made a U-turn and changed their route, and Wyatt Sterling’s expression darkened.

Thinking he was still angry, Alice opened the box and took out the hair tie, which was worth at least five figures.

Gathering her hair, she quickly tied it into a side ponytail.

The color of the hair tie complemented her outfit today, looking like a carefully coordinated match.

Once it was done, she reached out and poked the man’s firm arm. "Third Uncle, look."

The man didn’t look, only reminding her, "Sit still. Don’t move around."

Alice didn’t notice they had changed routes, nor did she sense anything was wrong. She just assumed it was Wyatt Sterling’s usual bad temper, refusing to easily accept her attempts to placate him.

But she didn’t regret the way she had spoken to him earlier.

’I’ll just have to say a few more nice things, worst-case scenario.’

She scooted over again, but this time, before she could even speak, Wyatt Sterling pressed down on the back of her neck.

It was so sudden that she was pushed down onto his lap, her face buried against his crotch.

The air instantly froze.

Mason Cheney, who was monitoring the road while keeping an eye on the situation in the back, caught a glimpse of the scene and immediately raised the privacy partition.

Alice’s breathing was shallow. She didn’t dare move. Wyatt Sterling didn’t make another move either, his hand still resting on the nape of her neck.

The atmosphere was quiet for a while. Wyatt Sterling took a call, but Alice was in no mood to listen to what he was saying. Only a single thought ran through her mind: ’Wyatt Sterling wants me to appease him with concrete actions.’

’Concrete actions...’

Alice closed her eyes. ’One really shouldn’t run their mouth so freely,’ she thought. ’Otherwise, you have to pay it back with your mouth.’

She hesitated for a long time before steeling herself and reaching for his belt buckle.

CLICK.

The belt was unbuckled.

Alice silently praised herself for how smoothly it went this time. There had been several occasions before when Wyatt Sterling had called her stupid for not even being able to undo his belt buckle, fumbling with it for ages without success.

Just as she was about to proceed, Wyatt Sterling grabbed her hand. "What are you doing?"

Alice looked up, her beautiful almond-shaped eyes blinking in confusion.

Just one look and Wyatt Sterling knew what she had misunderstood. In that instant, a smile spread to the corners of his eyes, and he laughed so hard his chest shook.

Alice’s delicate brows furrowed. ’He shouldn’t be laughing at a time like this, unless... I misunderstood!’

It hadn’t been a hint; there was another reason.

In an instant, a blush spread from Alice’s face to her neck, even tinting her collarbones a faint, misty red.

She pushed against his thighs to get up but was pressed down again by Wyatt Sterling.

He said, "Don’t move."

Alice gritted her back teeth. "What’s going on?"

"There’s a car following us," he said.

Alice was surprised. "Someone dares to tail your car, Third Uncle?"

Wyatt Sterling chuckled. "Who do you think it is?"

He hadn’t told her earlier because he was afraid this little sparrow would panic. It was best to resolve it quietly without her knowing, to save her from being on edge the entire ride.

’It was almost laughable,’ he thought. ’I’m still angry, yet I’m worried about her feelings.’

Alice sat up a little and looked up. "Is it Old Master Sterling’s men?"

While thinking she was heartless, Wyatt was also worried she would get tired holding herself up like that. He wrapped an arm around her side, supporting her arm. "You catch on quick."

She had immediately guessed it was Old Master Sterling’s men.

Alice grew nervous. "Then... the people following us, did they see me in your car?"

"Yes."

"..."

She shot up, her hurried movement causing her to accidentally press against a certain spot on him. Wyatt Sterling’s pupils turned frighteningly dark, and his breathing grew heavy.

She apologized profusely, but her face was filled with panic. She was nearly out of her wits, terrified that their relationship—one that couldn’t see the light of day—would be exposed to Old Master Sterling. She wasn’t ready to face that day yet.

Wyatt Sterling grabbed her wrist and pulled her into his arms. "So what if they saw you? Do you think I can’t protect you?"

Alice asked, "For a moment, or for a lifetime?"

Wyatt Sterling: "For a lifetime."

Alice let out a laugh that was uglier than a sob. "You’re so good at sweet-talking, Third Uncle."

She had almost believed him.

The drive back took Mason Cheney a long time. Alice didn’t remember which roads they took. When the car arrived at Shorecrest, she was still nestled in Wyatt Sterling’s arms, completely still.

As the privacy partition slowly lowered,

Wyatt Sterling asked, "Did you get a clear look at the license plate?"

"I did. It was the Mercedes that Second Master usually rides in. There was someone in the back seat. If I’m not mistaken, it should be Second Master himself."
