After Divorce I Married a Tycoon-Chapter 6: He Doesn’t Want to Divorce Claire Mercer, Does He?
The onlookers were stunned silent, petrified by the divorce papers Claire Mercer had just thrown down.
A divorce?
And Claire Mercer was the one asking for it?
Didn’t everyone know that Claire Mercer was completely devoted to Gavin Sinclair, a total simp for him?
For her to be the one demanding a divorce now? It completely shattered their image of her.
Even if Gavin had hidden the fact that his legs were healed.
Even if Gavin had rekindled his old flame with Scarlett behind her back...
Based on what they knew of her, she would never go so far as to ask for a divorce.
’Did she hit her head in the car accident? Or was her body snatched?’
"She must feel really threatened now that Scarlett’s back. You think she’s asking for a divorce to gain the upper hand?"
"Definitely. She couldn’t wait to marry Gavin when his legs were crippled. Now that his legs are fine, how could she possibly bear to divorce him?"
"A woman’s playbook is always the same: first tears, then a huge scene, then threatening suicide... Aren’t we on step two now?"
"So what’s next? Is she going to fake a suicide attempt to force Gavin’s hand?"
"Poor Gavin, getting stuck with someone so difficult..."
"Alright, alright, whatever the case, let’s get out of here."
And so, in less than three minutes, the only ones left in the grand hall were Claire Mercer, Gavin Sinclair, and Scarlett Jewel.
Gavin Sinclair stared at Claire Mercer, his face dark, and asked coldly.
"What is all this nonsense?"
He refused to believe Claire Mercer truly wanted to divorce him.
She had fought so hard to become Mrs. Sinclair, a position coveted by every woman in Rhonia. How could she possibly be willing to let it go?
"Gavin, let’s just talk about this calmly. What couple doesn’t have disagreements?"
With that, Scarlett Jewel turned to Claire Mercer and explained softly.
"My relationship with Gavin isn’t what you think."
"We’re just good friends now. You’ve really misunderstood."
"Misunderstood?"
Claire Mercer’s gaze, dripping with sarcasm, fell on Scarlett Jewel as she let out a sneer.
"Scarlett Jewel, you don’t have to keep up this act in front of me."
"Wasn’t it thrilling, carrying on your affair with him in the hospital room right next to mine?"
’Such a hypocrite. And now she’s here playing the perfect, innocent victim?’
Scarlett Jewel’s face instantly turned a shade of mottled crimson at her words.
She bit her lip, looking as if she had suffered some terrible injustice, and lowered her eyes without another word.
’What could she say?’
’The legitimate wife had caught her in the act. What was there to say?’
Gavin Sinclair decided to drop the act as well.
’She’d found out anyway, so there was no point in pretending anymore.’
’He had enjoyed the thrill of having her wrapped around his little finger.’
’But now... she had torn away all pretense, and he found it boring.’
"Claire Mercer, even if Scarlett and I did something to wrong you, do you have to be so aggressive?"
"Look at yourself. Do you look anything like the wife of a magnate should?"
"So, a magnate’s wife should just serve her husband like a maid every day, let him fool around with other women, and just keep her mouth shut?"
"And when he brings his mistress home, she should just obediently step aside for them?"
Gavin Sinclair was speechless.
Claire Mercer’s expression was grave, her eyes ice-cold as she stared at Gavin Sinclair and said flatly, "Just sign the papers!"
’She didn’t want to look at him for a second longer.’
’Heartless, disloyal, a cheater, and a male chauvinist to boot.’
’To think she had wasted two whole years on a man like this.’
’It really wasn’t worth it!’
Seeing that she wasn’t just throwing a tantrum, Gavin Sinclair felt a jolt of surprise. He narrowed his eyes, staring intently at Claire Mercer.
After a long moment, he finally asked, "So you really want to divorce me?"
"Is that so surprising?" Claire Mercer said with a self-deprecating scoff. "Then again, I was your simp, after all."
"For two years, I gave up my freedom, my dignity, and myself to take care of you... and what did I get in the end?"
"So please, just sign the papers. I don’t want to waste any more of our time."
’The more infatuated she had once been with him, the more disgusted she was now. Just looking at him felt like it was dirtying her eyes.’
Gavin Sinclair didn’t move. His eyes, dark and churning with fury, were fixed on her.
Having been defied by Claire Mercer yet again today, Gavin Sinclair was already seething with rage.
The simp who used to hang on his every word, who came when called and left when dismissed, was actually demanding a divorce.
This was tantamount to him, the great heir of the Sinclair Family, being dumped by a woman.
He felt his precious pride had been gravely insulted.
If word of this got out, how could he ever show his face in public again?
The more Gavin Sinclair thought about it, the angrier he became. He turned and stormed out, slamming the door with a deafening BANG.
Only Claire Mercer and Scarlett Jewel were left in the living room.
Seeing that Gavin Sinclair hadn’t signed the divorce papers and had stormed out in a rage, Scarlett Jewel’s delicate brows knitted slightly.
’Could it be that he doesn’t want to divorce Claire Mercer?’
’Did he actually develop feelings for her over the past two years?’
’A young man and woman, living together day in and day out, and she had taken such meticulous care of him...’
At the thought that Gavin Sinclair might have actually developed feelings for Claire Mercer, Scarlett Jewel’s previously calm heart sank.
’No.’
’She had to hurry up and get them divorced so she could take her place.’
’She had schemed for so long; she couldn’t let it all fall apart at the last second.’
"Are you satisfied now, Miss Jewel?"
Claire Mercer’s words broke Scarlett Jewel out of her thoughts.
Scarlett Jewel blinked innocently, feigning confusion.
"What do you mean by that, Miss Mercer?"
Claire Mercer sneered.
"You knew how Gavin Sinclair felt about you, so you followed me in your car and deliberately caused that accident."
"You deliberately stayed in the hospital room next to mine to have your affair, and you deliberately instigated him to pressure me about switching rooms..."
"Everything you did, wasn’t it all just to make me divorce him?"
"The car accident was just that—an accident. You shouldn’t make wild accusations, Miss Mercer."
Scarlett Jewel dropped her wronged expression, the corners of her lips curling into a smirk.
"Besides, if I wanted Gavin to divorce you, it would only take a single word from me. Do you really think I’d need to go to all this trouble?"
"You enjoy the process," Claire said.
"Making a fool out of me gives you a sense of accomplishment."
Scarlett Jewel stared at Claire Mercer, her eyes smiling, but said nothing.
’She hadn’t expected Claire Mercer to be so crystal clear about all the little tricks she’d been playing behind her back.’
’This was even better. It would save her the effort of having to deal with her further.’
’Now that she knew everything, she refused to believe Claire Mercer would be shameless enough to not go through with the divorce.’
Seeing Scarlett Jewel’s continued silence, Claire Mercer knew all her suspicions were correct.
"I have to admit, Miss Jewel, you’re quite cunning. No wonder Gavin Sinclair could never get over you."
"Now your goal is achieved. Congratulations."
’Originally, she wasn’t willing to make such a pathetic exit, to let them off so easily.’
’But just as Roxanne Peyton had said, a scumbag and a bitch deserve each other.’
’Besides, she didn’t want to waste any more of her precious time on someone like Gavin Sinclair. It wasn’t worth it.’
"Thank you." Scarlett wasn’t pretending anymore. "The one who isn’t loved is the real homewrecker. It’s good you’re so self-aware, Miss Mercer."
Hearing this, Claire Mercer scoffed. ’She really had the nerve to say something like that.’
"With your status, Miss Jewel, I imagine it won’t be so easy to marry into the Sinclair Family, Rhonia’s wealthiest clan, will it?"
"You don’t need to worry your pretty little head about that, Miss Mercer. When Gavin and I get married, you’re welcome to attend our wedding."
"After all, you and Gavin only ever got a marriage license. You never even had a wedding."
"Oh, right. I even heard that your face was Photoshopped into your wedding photos with Gavin."
Scarlett Jewel was beaming, flushed with success and brimming with confidence. Where was the slightest hint of the wronged woman from before?
Claire Mercer was smiling too.
’Was she really so sure she could marry Gavin Sinclair?’
’As far as she knew, Scarlett Jewel didn’t come from a wealthy family.’
’And the Sinclair Family, as the wealthiest in Rhonia, placed enormous importance on family background. A marriage had to be between social equals.’
’To put it bluntly, anyone who couldn’t benefit the Sinclair Family’s business would never gain their approval.’
’If Gavin Sinclair hadn’t had his accident, someone of her status would never have had the chance to marry him in this lifetime.’
’She, at least, had the title of Eldest Daughter of the Mercer Family. But Scarlett Jewel? What did she have?’
’Even if Gavin Sinclair was deeply in love with her, he probably wouldn’t defy his elders to marry a woman with no background, would he?’
’But that had nothing to do with her. From now on, she and Gavin Sinclair would be strangers, going their separate ways.’
"Then I wish you the best of luck in getting what you want, Miss Jewel. I won’t keep you any longer."
"Oh, and one more thing. Please take all this stuff you brought with you. The sight of it disgusts me, and the smell makes me nauseous."
With that, Claire Mercer turned and went upstairs.
Scarlett Jewel wasn’t angry. Instead, she watched Claire Mercer’s retreating back and curled her lips into a triumphant smirk.
’I stole Gavin Sinclair’s heart from you back then, and I can just as easily snatch the man himself from you today.’
’I’m not just going to take Gavin. I’m going to turn you into a pitiful, homeless wretch...’
’Just you wait, Claire Mercer!’
’I have a very big surprise in store for you.’
