After Divorce I Married a Tycoon-Chapter 3: Who is This Man?
Gavin Sinclair felt that the Claire Mercer before him was a complete stranger.
In the past, if he told her to go east, she would never go west.
For the two years they’d been married, she had been completely obedient to him.
But today, his words had no effect on her.
’Yes. She was so obsessed with him, loved him so desperately. She loved him so much that even after his car accident left his legs crippled, she had eagerly married him. Now that she saw how attentive he was to Scarlett, she must be jealous and was throwing a tantrum. Jealous women are so annoying.’
He was annoyed by Claire Mercer’s current unreasonableness.
On the surface, however, he put on a patient and gentle facade.
"Claire, I understand that you’re jealous right now."
"But while you’re jealous, you also need to know your place."
"The fact that I came to discuss this with you in person is already a great show of respect."
"Respect?"
Claire Mercer scoffed.
’His respect? Was it staying chaste for another woman, forcing me to live like a widow for two years, all while deceiving me from his wheelchair?’
’His respect? Was it cheating on me behind my back with his ex-girlfriend?’
’His respect? Was it fooling around wildly with his ex-girlfriend in the hospital room right next to mine?’
’If that was his idea of respect, then she could do without it.’
Seeing Claire Mercer fall silent again, Gavin Sinclair continued his attempt to persuade her.
"You know the Sinclair Family’s standing in Rhonia, don’t you?"
"If I wanted you out of this room, it would only take one phone call to the director."
"But I didn’t do that. I came to ask for your opinion instead, didn’t I?"
"Heh!" a man sneered. "Buddy, your ego’s so big I can smell it from here!"
At these words, Gavin Sinclair immediately looked toward the door.
Claire Mercer also lifted her gaze to the doorway.
There, she saw an incredibly handsome man staring at Gavin Sinclair with a smirk.
Sensing her looking at him, the man shifted his gaze, and their eyes met.
Claire Mercer felt a sense of familiarity from him, but she couldn’t remember where they might have met.
’Still, what he’d just said to Gavin Sinclair... that his ego was so big he could smell it...’
The sarcastic comment brought a faint smile to Claire Mercer’s lips.
Gavin Sinclair, having been mocked so openly, was naturally humiliated.
Adding to that, Claire Mercer had defied him today by not obediently giving up the room, so he was fuming inside.
He wheeled around and saw a stranger he’d never met before, and immediately judged that the man was not in his social class.
For him, the grand heir to Rhonia’s wealthiest family, to be mocked by some low-life, it made him grind his teeth in fury.
"Who the hell do you think you are, mocking me?"
The man, Adrian Sutton, crossed his arms, that same smirk on his face.
He leaned casually against the doorframe, his eyes fixed on Gavin Sinclair.
Every line of his face, from his lips to his brow, was etched with ridicule and scorn.
"Didn’t you say one call to the director was all it would take to get the patient to give up her room?"
"So, why don’t you, Sinclair, let me witness the power of the Sinclair Family?"
His mocking tone and provocative gaze instantly sent Gavin Sinclair into a towering rage.
The anger surging in his chest nearly made him lose the composure befitting the heir of Rhonia.
He laughed in fury, then immediately whipped out his phone and called his assistant.
"Call the director of this hospital right now."
"Tell him that I, Gavin Sinclair, demand he clear out Room 308 for me at once."
After hanging up, he shot a contemptuous glare at Adrian Sutton.
"Today, a low-life like you will get to see what real power and money can do."
Adrian Sutton arched a thick brow, his face still fixed in that smirk.
"Sinclair, I’m waiting with bated breath."
Two minutes later, his assistant called back.
Gavin Sinclair answered the call, full of confidence.
It was unclear what was said, but his expression gradually darkened with anger until it was a twisted mask of fury.
Claire Mercer, who had been worried she’d be forced out of the room, instantly understood the situation the moment she saw his face.
’Look at that colorful expression on Gavin Sinclair’s face...’
’Seeing Gavin Sinclair so utterly defeated...’
Claire Mercer finally felt a sense of satisfaction.
’She was the one who was injured, and he wanted to force her out of her hospital room for his mistress? By what right?’
"Well, Sinclair? How did it go?" Adrian Sutton asked, his tone dripping with mockery.
Gavin Sinclair remained awkwardly silent.
But the spectacular train wreck of emotions on his face told everyone the answer.
A sliver of doubt entered Claire Mercer’s mind.
’This man at the door... he seemed so certain that Gavin Sinclair would be humiliated...’
’Who is he?’
’Why is he standing up for me?’
’But none of that mattered.’
’As long as it made Gavin Sinclair miserable, she was happy.’
And when Adrian Sutton saw a smile finally return to Claire Mercer’s face, his own mood lifted as well.
His gaze fell back on Gavin Sinclair, and he taunted him:
"So it seems the power of the Sinclair Family isn’t all it’s cracked up to be."
At these words, Gavin Sinclair’s expression soured even further.
’Who is this man? How did he know the director would refuse him? He was the young master of Rhonia’s wealthiest family, the future heir of the Sinclair Family. Countless people in Rhonia wanted to curry favor with him, to please him. In all of Rhonia, very few dared to show him disrespect. But the director of this hospital, apparently, was one of those few. The man simply didn’t know what was good for him.’
And yet, he had just made such bold proclamations to Claire Mercer.
Now, having been so resoundingly humiliated, he was absolutely livid. 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆𝙬𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝒎
He struggled to restrain the urge to explode, asking Claire Mercer through gritted teeth,
"Claire, I’ll ask you one last time. Are you giving up the room or not?"
Claire Mercer’s answer was resolute. "I am not."
Hearing this, Gavin Sinclair exhaled in a furious huff. "Fine. Very fine."
"Claire Mercer, you’ve really grown some wings. You dare to defy me now."
"Did that car crash scramble your brains? Is that why you’re disrespecting me like this?"
Claire Mercer sneered inwardly.
’It didn’t scramble my brains. It woke me up completely.’
’Two precious years of my youth... Wasted on a scumbag who cheated, lied through his teeth, and hid behind a facade.’
’It was so not worth it...’
"Claire, do you have any idea how much of a stranger you seem to me right now?"
"You used to be so sensible and gentle, so well-behaved and obedient."
"How could one car crash change you into this?"
"Right now, I’m truly... very disappointed in you."
After delivering this heartbroken-sounding speech, Gavin Sinclair began to wheel himself away.
He assumed that, just like before, Claire Mercer would anxiously rush to stop him.
He expected her to compromise, admit she was wrong, and then obediently give up the room.
After all, in his eyes, Claire Mercer loved him so much.
In their marriage, she was clearly the weaker one—dependent on him, infatuated with him, utterly unable to live without him.
