After Divorce I Married a Tycoon-Chapter 22: I Hope You Can Have Some Shame
Adrian Sutton had wanted to tell Claire about his relationship with Silas Rowan.
’But on second thought, if I tell her, what reason will I have to ask for her help in the future?’
’If I don’t ask her for help, how can I close the distance between us?’
’Besides, Claire hates people from high society right now, especially the men...’
’So there are some things I have to keep from her for now.’
’If she finds out my real identity, I definitely won’t have a chance with her.’
’So, I’d better wait until the time is right, then slowly tell her everything, one piece at a time.’
So, Adrian Sutton said,
"Our maternal grandparents are from the same place."
"I met him when I was eight, the first time I visited my grandmother’s house. We’d hang out together occasionally after that."
"But we rarely saw each other after we started college."
He wasn’t actually lying. Silas Rowan’s maternal grandparents were his maternal grandparents. 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎
After his grandfather found him and brought him to the Sutton Family at the age of eight, he met his cousin, who was a year his junior, for the first time.
Since they were close in age and got along, Silas Rowan would visit their grandfather’s house to play with him during school breaks.
He would also occasionally come to Rhonia to see Silas Rowan, and the first time he ever met Claire was during the summer break of his freshman year of high school.
Unfortunately, Claire didn’t remember him at all.
’But that’s okay. We’re practically friends now. I’ll have plenty of opportunities from now on.’
Hearing his explanation, Claire’s doubts were finally put to rest.
’In other words, he and Young Master Rowan are basically childhood friends.’
’No wonder he could get into the banquet. He must have used his connection to Young Master Rowan.’
"If you and Young Master Rowan are childhood friends, why did you become a male model?"
"With a friend like him, it should’ve been easy for you to find a decent job in Rhonia."
"...We haven’t kept in touch much since college, and besides, I didn’t want to bother him."
"Besides, even if I had the nerve to ask him for help, there’s no guarantee he would have helped me."
"And even if he did, I’d owe him a huge favor."
"That’s true."
As they were talking, Claire suddenly saw Gavin Sinclair appear at the entrance of the banquet hall.
’He’d always been too proud to attend any event hosted by the Mercer Family before.’
’And today, he actually showed up on his own for the first time ever.’
’I thought he would’ve forgotten all about this after Scarlett Jewel called him away last night.’
The moment Gavin Sinclair arrived, he spotted Claire. When he saw Adrian Sutton standing beside her, his gaze turned icy.
He strode over and demanded in a low voice,
"Why didn’t you answer my calls? Didn’t I tell you I was coming to pick you up today?"
Finished, he shot Adrian Sutton a sinister glare, gritting his teeth in anger.
"You wouldn’t let me accompany you to the banquet, yet you brought this toy boy instead. Do you even have me, your husband, in your eyes anymore?"
Claire fought to control her temper. "Gavin Sinclair, we are in public. I suggest you show some decency."
"You may say it’s normal for men in high society to keep a few mistresses on the side."
"But the very first thing you, Sinclair, did after your legs healed was cheat on me, take a mistress, and abandon your own wife at the scene of a car accident."
"If word of this gets out, it would have a huge impact on the Sinclair Family’s reputation, wouldn’t it?"
"If you don’t mind your sordid affairs tarnishing the Sinclair Family’s image, then I couldn’t care less."
"I’d be more than happy to have a nice little chat with all the guests about what you’ve done."
Gavin Sinclair was rendered speechless by Claire’s words.
"Still, you can’t just parade this toy boy around at a banquet! Aren’t you just slapping me in the face?"
Silas Rowan bit out three words: "Young Master Sinclair."
He then turned and stared coldly at Gavin Sinclair.
"Adrian Sutton came with me."
Gavin Sinclair was about to retort, ’Who the hell do you think you are...?’
But when he turned, he saw the man looked somewhat familiar. A moment later, he recognized him.
"You’re... Silas Rowan, the Young Master of the Rowan Family?"
Gavin Sinclair was stunned.
’Silas Rowan actually came to a banquet hosted by the Mercer Family?’
’What is going on?’
’Even when the Sinclair Family hosts a banquet and invites the Rowans, they don’t even give us the time of day.’
’And now he’s actually deigned to come to the Mercer Family’s event...’
Gavin Sinclair’s expression changed in an instant, and he turned to Silas Rowan with a fawning smile.
"To run into you here, Young Master Rowan, it must be fate."
"But what brings you to the Mercer Family’s banquet, Young Master Rowan?"
Silas Rowan retorted coolly, "And why shouldn’t I be here?"
Gavin Sinclair quickly waved his hands, a sycophantic smile plastered on his face.
"No, no, no! Your presence is a great honor for the Mercer Family."
Silas Rowan had heard such flattery far too many times.
He had seen this kind of servile, bootlicking attitude from people like Gavin Sinclair far too often.
It couldn’t be helped.
His birth had destined him to be surrounded by a tide of such people, all flocking to him.
’The thing is, I’m not even following in my grandfather’s or father’s footsteps. Why do these people insist on trying to get my attention?’
’It’s endlessly annoying.’
’I really envy Adrian Sutton right now. He’s always done a good job of hiding his identity.’
’If his real identity were ever exposed, the number of people trying to curry favor with him would probably be endless.’
"Still, Young Master Rowan, why would you bring someone like him to a banquet?"
Gavin Sinclair was referring to Adrian Sutton.
His gaze toward Adrian Sutton was filled with undisguised contempt.
Silas Rowan looked at Gavin Sinclair with impatience and retorted with a cold smile,
"Do I need to report to you who I bring with me?"
"Also, the injuries on his face... did you do that?"
’Is he posturing like this because he’s planning to stand up for this toy boy?’
’Although the Sinclair Family is the wealthiest in Rhonia, a top-tier family...’
’...when faced with the Rowan Family, all we can do is bow and scrape.’
’That’s because the Rowan Family isn’t just a deeply-rooted, century-old prestigious family in Rhonia.’
’The eldest daughter-in-law of the Rowan Family, Silas Rowan’s mother Sophie Cheney, comes from an even more illustrious background.’
’Silas Rowan’s maternal grandfather is a major figure who’s constantly on the national news.’
’Compared to that kind of top-tier powerhouse, the Sinclair Family is nothing.’
’If Silas Rowan really decides to stick up for this toy boy, then I’m truly screwed.’
’It could even drag the entire Sinclair Family down with me.’
With that thought, Gavin Sinclair quickly put on an apologetic smile.
"Well... actually, it was just a small misunderstanding yesterday."
"I’ll apologize to this... gentleman properly another day. No, I’ll do it right after the banquet."
"Brother?" Adrian Sutton asked, then lightly tossed out three more words. "Are you worthy?"
The smile on Gavin Sinclair’s face froze, but he didn’t dare lash out.
"Yes, yes, yes. That was presumptuous of me."
’Fucking pleb.’
’Acting all high and mighty just because you have Young Master Rowan backing you?’
’You want to be my, Gavin Sinclair’s, brother? You should look in a mirror and see if you’re even qualified.’
’Does he really think he’s someone special?’
’I don’t get it. How on earth did Young Master Rowan get to know a toy boy like this?’
’Isn’t he afraid of cheapening his own status?’
This was the first time Claire had ever seen the arrogant Young Master of the Sinclair family bowing and scraping so subserviently before someone else.
’He looks just like a lapdog.’
’It’s a shame we’re in a secluded corner of the banquet hall right now.’
’It would be even better if more people could see Gavin Sinclair’s bootlicking expression.’
Just as she was thinking this, Julian Mercer’s voice came through the banquet hall’s speakers.
This meant that today’s banquet was finally beginning.
’I still have no idea what the purpose of this banquet is.’
’What could possibly be so important that they’d make such a grand affair out of it?’
