After Divorce I Married a Tycoon-Chapter 145: Causing Trouble for Claire Mercer
The older women were certain that Claire Mercer’s threat to call the police was just to scare them.
Even if she did call the police, and even if the police actually showed up...
They were confident the police wouldn’t bother with such a petty matter.
After all, the old lady had only sprained her back.
It wasn’t like her life was in danger.
The older women weren’t worried. They plopped down on a sofa in the hotel lobby.
They looked quite relaxed, clearly not taking Claire Mercer seriously.
"Didn’t you say you called the police? Where are they?"
"Yeah, we’ve been waiting for several minutes. Why aren’t the police here yet?"
"You’d better get the police here fast. My time is valuable. I don’t have all day to waste here."
Claire Mercer wasn’t in a hurry either. She calmly waited for the police to arrive.
A short while later, officers from the local precinct arrived.
Seeing that the police had actually come, the older women’s arrogance instantly deflated by a third.
"Who called it in?"
"I did." Claire Mercer stepped forward and explained the entire incident to the officers in detail.
Then, she had the hotel staff show the police the security footage from the elevator area where it happened.
After watching the footage, an officer said to the older women:
"Your actions constitute malicious pushing and shoving, which can also be described as intentional assault."
"Maliciously pushing someone and causing an injury like a sprain can lead to civil liabilities or even criminal charges."
"It all depends on the official medical assessment of the victim’s injuries."
"If it’s classified as a minor injury, your actions already constitute suspected intentional bodily harm, which is illegal."
The officer was about to say more, but he saw the faces of the recently arrogant women instantly turn deathly pale.
"Wait... Officer, we didn’t lay a hand on her..."
"Yeah, we just gave her a little push. We didn’t know she was so fragile."
The officer shot her a look. "The victim is clearly an elderly woman in her seventies or eighties."
"Don’t you know how fragile people are at that age?"
The aggressive-looking woman who led the group tried to argue.
"It gets crowded getting into an elevator. It wasn’t on purpose."
The officer stared at her coldly. "I just watched the footage. You were the one who pushed this elderly woman, and you were the one who shoved her out of the elevator."
"Furthermore, your target was clear. You went straight for this victim. It doesn’t look like an accident at all."
"Your actions were the most egregious. The others, at most, would bear joint liability."
"All right, you can come with us and tell us the rest at the station."
When they heard the police wanted to take them to the station, the women were scared stiff.
They immediately confessed that they had been paid to do it.
"Officer, we were just following orders! We didn’t want to target them."
The officer’s eyes narrowed. "Following orders? Whose orders?"
"It was the bride who got married into the Sinclair family today."
"Yes, yes, she’s the one who gave us money to cause trouble for her," one of the women said, pointing at Claire Mercer.
"Then we saw how protective she was of that old lady, so we decided to specifically go after them..."
Hearing this, a cold light glinted in Claire Mercer’s eyes. She bit out a name, syllable by syllable:
"Scar-lett—Jew-el!"
’She really couldn’t understand what was wrong with Scarlett Jewel.’
’Scarlett was the other woman, the one who knowingly wrecked her family.’
’Even if that family had been full of deceit and lies.’
’But her behavior as a homewrecker was indefensible, no matter how you looked at it.’
’How could she be so shameless?’
’It was as if she, Claire Mercer, had been the other woman who destroyed Scarlett’s family.’
’They were both married now, and Scarlett had gotten what she wanted, marrying Gavin Sinclair.’
’So why did she still have to come and provoke her? She’d even caused her grandmother to sprain her back.’
Claire Mercer was seething with uncontrollable anger. She immediately called Gavin Sinclair.
The call connected quickly, and Gavin Sinclair’s slightly excited voice came through the phone.
"Claire, you finally brought yourself to call me..."
Just hearing Gavin Sinclair’s voice annoyed Claire Mercer now.
She couldn’t be bothered with pleasantries and commanded in a cold voice, "Get your wife down here."
Gavin Sinclair’s eyes narrowed. He glanced at Scarlett Jewel, who was changing in the dressing room.
"What’s going on...?"
"I’m not here to waste time with you."
Claire Mercer cut Gavin Sinclair off coldly.
"Either you two come down to the hotel lobby, or I’m coming up to find you with the police."
"With the police?"
Gavin Sinclair’s brow furrowed.
He couldn’t help but glance at Scarlett Jewel again.
His expression instantly darkened.
He said to Claire Mercer, "We’ll be right down."
’He couldn’t let her bring the police to the banquet hall.’
’If the guests who hadn’t left yet saw them, there was no telling what kind of rumors would spread.’
After hanging up, he found Scarlett Jewel and asked, "What did you do?"
Scarlett Jewel asked back, her expression unchanged. "What could I have done?"
"I’ve been busy with the wedding all morning. What do you think I could have done?"
Gavin Sinclair knew he wouldn’t get anything out of her, so he just said:
"Come downstairs with me right now."
Scarlett Jewel rolled her eyes but followed Gavin Sinclair downstairs, full of questions.
As soon as she got downstairs, she saw the group of older women she had hired still in the hotel lobby.
Standing in front of them were Claire Mercer and several uniformed police officers.
A chill ran down Scarlett Jewel’s spine. She approached the lobby with a nervous heart.
Before she even got close, she saw one of the women point at her and say to the police:
"That’s her... Officer, she’s the one who ordered us to go make trouble for them."
"She even said she would take responsibility if anything happened, so that’s why we deliberately bothered them."
"That’s right. She found us, gave each of us a thousand yuan, and told us to go make things unpleasant for them."
Faced with the women’s accusations, a flicker of panic crossed Scarlett Jewel’s face.
’All she did was ask them to cause a little trouble for Claire Mercer, right?’
’How did that get the police involved?’
’It was precisely because a little squabble wouldn’t arouse Claire Mercer’s suspicion.’
’That’s why she had found these aggressive women to stir things up.’
’Today was her wedding day, but Claire Mercer had stolen all her guests.’
’Her wedding banquet was deserted, and she even had to go find passersby to fill the seats.’
’The poster at the hotel entrance had made her look dull and insignificant in comparison, like a clown.’
’It was utterly humiliating.’
’She was furious.’
’She had looked forward to this magnificent wedding for so long, only for it to turn into something that looked like a senior citizens’ association meeting.’
’How could she possibly swallow that insult?’
’That’s why she had to make things a little unpleasant for Claire Mercer, too.’
’All she wanted was to ruin her good mood.’
’But what on earth had this group of women done?’
’How did they manage to get the police involved?’
’Scarlett Jewel really couldn’t figure it out.’
