Chapter 104: Chapter 104: Is Sinclair Planning to Keep Me?

At his words, Claire Mercer stopped in her tracks.

She turned to face Gavin Sinclair, her expression dripping with sarcasm.

"What, is Sinclair planning to pay me a million to be his kept woman?"

"No..."

"Then what do you mean?"

"If you think one million is too little, I’ll give you two million. No, five million."

"As long as you don’t marry him, I’ll transfer the money to your account immediately."

"And then?" Claire Mercer asked with a sneer. "Take your money, be your kept woman, your secret lover on the side?"

"That broke loser can’t give you anything. At least I can give you what he can’t—money and material wealth."

"You have nothing with him, not even a place to live. What could you possibly see in him?"

"I see that he’s younger and better-looking than you."

"Take your filthy money and get lost. And stay the hell away from me from now on."

With that, Claire Mercer turned and took Adrian Sutton’s arm again.

The two of them entered the Marriage Registration Office without a single glance back.

Gavin Sinclair’s eyes were bloodshot as he tried to chase after them, but Scarlett Jewel blocked his way.

"Gavin Sinclair, what do you think you’re doing?"

Scarlett Jewel raised her voice.

"We just got our marriage certificate, and you’re already staring all lovey-dovey at another woman."

"What does that make me? Do I even exist in your eyes?"

"And don’t forget, I’m carrying your child—the eldest great-grandson of the Sinclair family."

"If you upset me and something happens to this baby, I’d like to see how you’ll compete with the second branch of the family then."

She glared at Gavin Sinclair.

All of her former easygoing charm was gone.

The way she was acting now made her look more like a common shrew.

Gavin Sinclair grew incredibly irritated just looking at her.

He thought of Claire Mercer’s fresh, refined elegance moments ago and contrasted it with Scarlett’s current arrogance, causing his brow to knit together tightly.

"What are you shouting for in public?"

"Look at you. Do you have any of the poise or class a high-society wife is supposed to have?"

Scarlett Jewel scoffed, her voice dripping with sarcasm.

"What, we just got married and you’re already sick of me?"

"I’m telling you, it’s too late."

"I have the marriage certificate now. Don’t even think about getting rid of me in this lifetime."

"Besides, Claire Mercer would rather marry a penniless nobody than spare you—the great young master of Rhonia’s wealthiest family—a second glance."

"Isn’t it obvious how much she despises you? And you’re still eager to go groveling at her feet."

"She’s only marrying that penniless loser to make me angry." The thought had just occurred to Gavin Sinclair.

"Otherwise, why would she insist on getting her marriage certificate on the same day?"

Hearing this, Scarlett Jewel felt that Gavin Sinclair must have truly lost his mind.

As a woman, she could see it clearly: the look in Claire Mercer’s eyes was one of utter disgust.

And yet, he interpreted it all as proof that Claire Mercer was just too in love with him...

Scarlett Jewel shot him a complicated look.

"Has it ever occurred to you that today might just be an auspicious day for getting married?"

"And that’s why she chose today to get her marriage certificate?"

"Impossible," Gavin Sinclair said. "Claire never used to believe in this stuff."

"Besides, why didn’t she get married before? Why did she have to pick today?"

"Isn’t it because she was waiting for me to come back to her?"

"Now that she sees I’m married, she’s completely given up hope and just grabbed some broke loser to marry in an attempt to get a rise out of me."

At his words, Scarlett Jewel was so speechless that she lost all desire to even make a sarcastic comment.

She sneered, tugging at the corner of her lip.

Looking down condescendingly at Gavin Sinclair in his wheelchair, she let out a cold huff.

"Belated affection is cheaper than dirt. If you knew you’d feel this way, why did you have to hurt her in the first place?"

"This whole lovesick act you’re putting on now? Even I think it’s disgustingly fake."

At her words, Gavin Sinclair looked up at her, his gaze chilling and sinister.

"If you hadn’t kept seducing me back then, would Claire and I have ended up like this?"

"If it weren’t for the child in your belly, do you think you’d have the right to stand here and talk to me now?"

"Watch your tone with me from now on."

But Scarlett Jewel couldn’t care less about any of that now.

Not only did she have the baby as her shield...

...but she also had the marriage certificate.

She no longer needed to pretend to be gentle and gracious in front of Gavin Sinclair.

All that gentle, considerate, and understanding behavior from before? It was all an act to secure her position.

Now that she’d achieved her goal, why should she force herself to put up with it anymore?

"I’m pregnant. I get emotional easily."

"And when I get emotional, it could affect the baby."

"You wouldn’t want anything to happen to our child, would you?"

"If you actually do upset me and something happens to the baby, can you afford the consequences?"

At her words, Gavin Sinclair gritted his teeth. "You..."

These past few days, she’d been using the baby as leverage for every little thing.

The moment he said anything harsh, she’d bring up the baby.

’If it weren’t for his grandmother’s poor health, putting them in a critical period...’

’...he could have easily gotten rid of the child in Scarlett’s womb.’

’He was still young; it wasn’t like he couldn’t have other children.’

’Why should he let her threaten him with this baby again and again?’

’But there’s nothing I can do. This is a critical time.’

’She’s carrying the Sinclair family’s eldest great-grandson, and that baby is our bargaining chip in the fight for the family fortune...’

’He could only tolerate Scarlett.’

’Once the child is born safely and he inherits the Sinclair Family fortune...’

’...the very first thing I’ll do is kick this woman to the curb.’

With these thoughts, Gavin Sinclair pushed his wheelchair away, his gaze lingering reluctantly, looking back every few feet.

’Once I inherit the Sinclair Family, I’ll definitely win Claire back.’

’Just you wait, Claire...’

「Inside the Marriage Registration Office.」

Once Claire Mercer was certain they were out of Gavin Sinclair’s line of sight, her hand slipped from Adrian Sutton’s arm.

"Sorry, I just used you."

"It’s fine."

’I’d let her use me for a lifetime.’

"I only said all that because I don’t want anything more to do with Gavin Sinclair. Don’t take it to heart."

"I know."

He knew perfectly well that her show of intimacy had been an act for Gavin Sinclair.

But hearing her say it out loud still made his spirits sink.

’How long will it take to truly win Claire’s heart?’

Meanwhile, Hughes, a photographer, and a few assistants were already waiting for them in the main hall.

Seeing his boss and the lady arrive, Hughes immediately instructed the photographer.

"Film the entire process. Don’t miss a single detail."

He then immediately stepped forward with a smile to greet the pair.

He was extremely enthusiastic—a little too enthusiastic, even.

His over-the-top enthusiasm left Claire Mercer a little bewildered.

Before she could even process what was happening, the photographer hoisted a camera onto his shoulder, stepped forward, and started filming her and Adrian Sutton.

Claire Mercer was taken aback by the spectacle. "What’s all this?"
