Chapter 209: Chapter 209: Natalie Vaughn in Yenton

Natalie Vaughn wore a simple white short down jacket along with jeans. Partly for convenience in movement, partly to better bridge the gap with the elderly couple.

She originally had mixed feelings about the elderly couple, but when she saw them supporting each other as they ran out, a bitterness suddenly rose in her heart.

In those aging eyes no longer clear, light gleamed, filled with anticipation.

Almost the moment Natalie met those eyes, she understood that the elderly couple heard the sound of the car and thought Gideon Sheffield had returned.

Then she witnessed with her own eyes their eyes shift from hopeful to disappointed, as if accustomed to this kind of letdown.

They probably also woke up suddenly, realizing their son lost his legs five years ago, how could he drive back? Or perhaps...

Were they hoping Zane Thorne would bring Gideon Sheffield back?

Natalie didn’t have time to ponder further and directly called out to stop the two elderly who were about to turn back inside.

"Uncle, Aunt."

Natalie closed the car door and immediately caught up.

The elderly couple stopped again, turned around, and scrutinized Natalie from top to bottom. After confirming they didn’t know her, they asked.

"Young lady, who are you?"

"Uncle, Aunt, I’m Zane’s wife, I..."

Upon hearing Zane Thorne’s name, the elderly’s faces changed instantly, unwilling even to cast a glance at Natalie and turned directly to go inside, even intending to close the door.

Natalie swiftly extended her hand to block them, but didn’t expect the seemingly frail elderly to have such strength and speed. Natalie’s hand got caught in the door.

Natalie instinctively cried out in pain, and seeing the elderly hesitate for a moment looking at her hand, she quickly spoke up.

"Zane is currently in Altara!"

Hearing the words Altara, the elderly hesitated a bit longer. Natalie knew what concerned them most was their son, so she didn’t rush to say more and let her trapped hand remain as it was.

As she anticipated, a minute later, the door slowly opened.

"What did you just say?"

It was Gideon Sheffield’s father asking.

Natalie offered a very sweet smile.

"Uncle, Zane is in Altara now, so this year I’m visiting you."

Sheffield’s face remained stern as he asked again.

"What’s he doing in Altara?"

Natalie blinked.

"He’s taking care of your son in Altara."

Recalling the call with Aaron Channing before coming here, Natalie smiled softly.

"Does Uncle not want to know about your son’s situation?"

How could he not want to know?

Gideon Sheffield’s mother nudged Elder Sheffield, opened the door, and invited Natalie inside.

"Young lady, it’s cold outside, come sit inside."

Natalie sweetly agreed at once.

"Thank you, Aunt. Please wait, I brought some things for you, they’re in the trunk, I’ll get them."

Saying this, Natalie was about to turn back to get the things, but after taking a step, she suddenly looked back at Elder Sheffield’s hand on the doorknob.

"Aunt, please watch Uncle for me, don’t let him close the door again."

As soon as she finished speaking, Elder Sheffield let out a heavy snort.

Natalie pretended to be startled and shrunk her shoulders, Aunt Sheffield immediately pinched him, whispering.

"Why show such a stern face to a young girl?"

"What young girl, that’s Zane’s wife."

"What’s wrong with Zane’s wife? Before when the child came, you gave him the cold shoulder and didn’t let him in. What happened back then...can’t entirely blame the child, this young lady came to see us out of goodwill, and you trapped her hand."

"Hmph, why would I be fond of her visiting me?"

Unable to counter, Aunt Sheffield simply pinched him again.

Hearing this conversation, Natalie had a good grasp of the situation. The elderly couple wasn’t entirely stubborn, and she was excellent at pleasing her elders. Once she found the breakthrough point, getting inside shouldn’t be a problem.

Natalie had quite a lot of things to bring, moving them in six trips to get them to the door. Seeing Aunt Sheffield’s heartbroken expression, Natalie immediately started to act coquettishly.

"Aunt, my hand really hurts."

Saying this, she showed the hand that had been caught to the elderly. Her skin, naturally delicate, turned blue and purple after the pinch. It was cold and she hadn’t done any protection; the three fingers that got caught were directly swollen, looking somewhat scary at first glance.

Aunt Sheffield looked at Natalie’s watery eyes, seeming like she was about to cry, and gave Elder Sheffield a hard pat on the shoulder.

"Bring all these things inside for me."

Finishing this, she pulled Natalie into the house with heartfelt concern, speaking as they walked.

"It’s so cold, why didn’t you wear gloves? It must have hurt just now when you got pinched, right?"

Natalie blinked and shook her head.

"Aunt, actually it wasn’t too bad, not very painful."

Aunt didn’t grasp Natalie’s change but examined her hand carefully. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

"Your hand is swollen like this, how could it not hurt? Sit here for now, I’ll get some ointment for you."

Saying this, Aunt Sheffield went into the inner room.

Natalie didn’t actually sit down but went back to help Elder Sheffield move the things into the courtyard.

"Uncle, let me help you."

Elder Sheffield glared at her without speaking. When Natalie tried to help, he pushed her away.

Coincidentally, this scene was seen by Aunt Sheffield, who had just gotten the ointment.

"Why are you being rough, you old man? Who indulges your bad temper?"

Elder Sheffield: ...

Natalie knew how to play to elders’ thoughts; though Aunt Sheffield seemed to be siding with her now, how could she compete with a lifelong partner of decades?

Currently, Aunt’s attitude was only because she specifically came to visit them, also because she had the news they wanted about Gideon Sheffield.

"Aunt, it was just that I didn’t stand properly."

Hearing this, Elder Sheffield snorted coldly.

"Though I’m old, I dare to own up to my actions, so what if I pushed?"

Natalie: ...

Upon hearing this, Aunt Sheffield picked up a broom from inside the house and gave Elder Sheffield a good swat.

"At your age, how can you talk nonsense!"

Natalie: ...

Before coming here, she expected being unwelcome, expected difficulties, but didn’t foresee encountering such a situation.

It’s just...this is funny and adorable.

In the end, Natalie not only had to endure the pain in her hand to stop Aunt Sheffield from attacking Uncle Sheffield but also take on the task of mediation, and most importantly!

The items in the yard were still brought inside by her.

By the time Natalie finished washing her hands and was ready to apply ointment, she was already numb with pain.

However, after all the twists and turns, she finally sat down in the Sheffield house and took a sip of hot tea.

Uncle Sheffield took out his tobacco, wrapped it in paper, then lit it and took a puff. The old man’s tobacco was strong and harsh, and with no windows open in the house, Natalie wasn’t prepared, inhaling the smoke.

She choked and started coughing immediately.
