Accidentally Yours, My Super Rich Second Husband-Chapter 68: Don’t Leave
Delphinia tiptoed down the quiet hallway, clutching her cardigan tightly around her. She paused just outside Evander’s room, chewing her lower lip nervously.
Her plan was simple: grab a pillow from his room and head back to Ashton’s. She assumed Evander wouldn’t be in his room yet—it was far too early for him to retire for the night.
Pushing the door open cautiously, she slipped inside. Delphinia’s gaze darted toward the pillows piled invitingly at the head of the bed, her target in sight.
But then she froze.
Evander was already there.
He was sitting on the edge of the bed, his head bowed slightly as if lost in thought. His hair was slightly disheveled, as though he’d run his hands through it repeatedly.
Delphinia blinked, her heart racing as his head turned toward her.
"Delphinia?" Evander’s deep voice broke the silence, tinged with a hint of surprise.
She gave him an awkward smile, her cheeks warming instantly. "Oh! I didn’t know you were here already."
He raised an eyebrow, clearly bemused, but said nothing.
Determined to make her exit as quickly as possible, Delphinia darted into the room, her steps hurried yet silent as she made a beeline for the bed. She grabbed one of the pillows, hugging it to her chest like a shield.
"Well, um...good night!" she blurted out, already backing toward the door.
But before she could escape, Evander’s voice stopped her.
"Wait," he said softly, the word heavy enough to root her to the spot.
Delphinia froze, her hand gripping the doorknob tightly. Slowly, she turned halfway, her awkward smile still plastered on her face. "Yes?"
"Where are you going?" he asked, his tone casual but his eyes sharp, watching her every move.
"I...um...to Ashton’s room," she stammered, shifting her weight nervously.
Evander tilted his head slightly, his gaze steady. "You don’t have to sleep in Ashton’s room."
Delphinia laughed awkwardly, clutching the pillow even tighter. "It’s fine, really. Ashton likes having me there. And I don’t mind—"
Before she could finish, she felt it.
A pair of strong arms wrapped around her from behind, pulling her gently but firmly into a warm embrace. Her breath hitched as she felt the weight of Evander’s head rest on her shoulder.
"Don’t go," he whispered, his voice low and raw, so close that she could feel the warmth of his breath against her neck.
Delphinia’s entire body stiffened. Her mind went blank, unable to process the sudden intimacy of the moment. The pillow in her arms felt absurdly out of place, but she clung to it like a lifeline, too stunned to move.
"Evander..." she managed to croak.
"Stay," he murmured, his tone heavy with something she couldn’t quite name. Desperation? Loneliness? Both?
Delphinia’s heart pounded in her chest, her cheeks flaming as she stood frozen in his embrace. She didn’t know what to do, what to say. All she could feel was the solid warmth of him against her back, the way his arms seemed to envelop her completely, as though he were afraid she might slip away if he let go.
Finally, she found her voice. "Evander, what’s going on?" she asked, her tone soft but tinged with concern.
He didn’t respond immediately. Instead, he tightened his hold on her, his fingers pressing gently against her arms. When he finally spoke, his voice was quiet, almost fragile.
"Don’t leave me all alone again."
Delphinia’s breath caught in her throat. She turned her head slightly, catching a glimpse of his face. With his eyes closed, his expression, calm and unguarded, was unlike anything she’d ever seen from him before.
For a moment, she couldn’t move, couldn’t think. The weight of his words, the sadness in his voice—it all hit her at once, stirring something deep within her.
"Okay," she said softly, almost instinctively.
Evander exhaled, the tension in his body easing slightly as he buried his face in the crook of her neck. "Thank you," he whispered, the words barely audible.
Delphinia hesitated before lifting one hand to pat his hand on her waist awkwardly, still clutching the pillow with her other arm. She wasn’t sure what else to do, how else to respond.
"Evander," she called gently. "What’s wrong?"
He didn’t answer right away. When he finally lifted his head, his dark eyes met hers, filled with a sadness that made her chest ache.
"It’s nothing," he said, though the weight in his gaze betrayed his words.
Delphinia frowned, shifting slightly to face him fully. "It doesn’t seem like nothing."
Evander sighed, his shoulders slumping as he ran a hand through his hair. He looked tired, more so than she had ever seen him.
"I just..." He trailed off. "I don’t want to be alone tonight."
Delphinia’s heart clenched. She didn’t know what had brought him to this point, what had caused the cracks in the carefully composed facade he always wore. But in that moment, she saw him not as the confident, untouchable man she had always known, but as someone who was deeply, painfully human.
She nodded slowly, her grip on the pillow loosening. "Okay," she said again,
Evander’s lips curved into a faint, almost bittersweet smile. Without another word, he leaned forward, resting his forehead against her shoulder once more.
Delphinia stood there, her free hand hovering awkwardly before she placed it lightly on his back. She patted him gently, unsure of what else to do but wanting to offer some small measure of comfort.
The room was silent save for the faint sound of their breathing. Every moment felt like an eternity, loaded with everything they weren’t saying.
Delphinia tightened her hold on the pillow, her mind racing. She didn’t understand what had brought them to this moment, but she knew one thing for certain: she couldn’t walk away. Not now, not when he needed her.
As the minutes passed, Evander’s breathing grew slower, steadier. He didn’t say anything else, and neither did she. They simply stood there, locked in a quiet, fragile moment that neither of them dared to break.
And for the first time, Delphinia understood what it felt like to be genuinely relied on.
