Chapter 62: Secret from the past

Sienna sat on the leather chair in her study and recalled everything that had happened since she met Kyrell. The man had been exceptionally amiable as if they had known each other for years. But never once did he show her his feelings, feelings that were deeper than the ocean.

Sienna wasn’t a narcissist. But she knew many people liked her. She was a famous person after all, and she was rich, beautiful, capable, and most important of all, single. So, she didn’t mind if Kyrell was one among them.

Tapping her fingers against the desk, she thought of every possibility behind Kyrell entering her life. She even gave him the benefit of the doubt and wondered if he really had good intentions and entered her life to protect her. Nothing more.

However, if he had a motive in mind and ...

Sienna’s thoughts were interrupted by a strong knock at the door, and she didn’t have to guess who it was. Deciding to face the matter head-on, she permitted the man to enter and leaned back in her chair.

Compared to his panicked expression before, when he had shown his hidden feelings for her, Kyrell now looked composed and assured.

"Miss Lawrence, may I have a word with you?" Kyrell asked, hoping she wouldn’t reject him without listening to him. Although he looked calm on the outside, his heart was a mess, and his emotions were barely under his control.

Sienna nodded, waiting to see what the man wanted to tell her.

"Miss Lawrence, I guess there’s no use hiding it since you already know."

"Do you like me?" Sienna asked directly, interrupting him, and Kyrell went blank instantly, forgetting everything he had prepared to tell her.

Staring at her silently, he didn’t react for a long time.

"Mr. Winchester, do you like me?" Sienna asked again when she didn’t get his response.

Letting out a deep breath, Kyrell’s shoulders dropped, and he nodded. "Yes, Miss Lawrence. I do."

"Since when?"

"Three years."

Sienna’s gaze narrowed, and she examined him for a few seconds. He didn’t seem to be lying.

"But we didn’t know each other three years ago."

"Yes, Miss Lawrence. That’s not true, actually. We knew each other long ago."

"Have we met each other before?" Sienna wondered if she had forgotten something. "Were you in charge of security at any Lawrence Group events?"

"Umm... Cheetah Corps is in charge of the security at the Global Innovation Summit every year."

"That explains it," Sienna mumbled to herself.

"Miss Lawrence, trust me. I have no intentions in mind. I just want to protect you," Kyrell stressed, hoping she’d believe him.

Sienna didn’t respond immediately. She, however, observed him calmly, thinking about the contract her brother was about to sign with the Cheetah Corps.

Kyrell had entered her life even before the tragedy happened. If her brother had signed the contract, he’d have been her bodyguard long ago. And it was her brother who approached him and not the other way round.

The balance in her heart was tilting in favor of Kyrell, and her expression softened. Now that she knew the man liked her, she was curious to learn how it all started.

"Mr. Winchester, would you mind revealing why you like me? I know it’s not a passing crush or a celebrity crush, and I’m certain that you liking me isn’t related to me being rich or beautiful. So how can anyone have such deep feelings for anyone they barely know?"

"Miss Lawrence, I was intrigued by you at first," Kyrell said, recalling the first time he saw her. "I remember how you put the men judging you in their places."

It wasn’t her beauty or wealth that attracted him to her. It was her persona, her innate confidence, and mind-blowing temperament that drew him to her. And the more he got to know her, the more he started liking her.

"But the more I got to know you, the more I was fascinated and...." Kyrell stopped suddenly when he thought of the secret which no one knew, not even Xavier.

"And?" Sienna probed, curious to learn why he stopped suddenly.

Kyrell pursed his lips and closed his eyes. He wasn’t willing to disclose the deepest hidden secret. However, now that his ’friendship’ with Sienna was at jeopardy, he had no choice.

"And, I found out you and I were in the same foster care."

Sienna’s eyes rounded, and she stood up so suddenly that her knee hit the table edge hard.

"Careful, Miss Lawrence." Kyrell stopped the swivel chair that had hit the wall from hitting her back.

"What did you just say?" Sienna asked incredulously. She couldn’t believe what he said and wondered if she was hearing things now.

Kyrell’s lips thinned into a hard line. "You and I were in the same foster care."

Sienna didn’t have any memories related to her foster home. She had been a toddler when her parents had adopted her. So, she didn’t know how much of his words contained the truth.

"You were adopted a few weeks after you joined us, and you were only three or four. So, you might not remember," Kyrell said, watching the changes in her expression.

"How do you remember then?" Sienna subconsciously spoke without any formalities.

"Miss Lawrence, I was seven then. I remember."

Sienna’s mind was a mess. Previously, she had been worried about Kyrell approaching her with ill intentions. Now, her thoughts were all about him and her being in the same foster care. The world was so small.

"Is that why you like me?" Sienna asked, still unable to bring herself to accept the explosive truth.

"You were the first friend I made. I can’t forget you ever," Kyrell replied with all seriousness. "I guess finding that truth was the catalyst for me to start liking you."

Kyrell still remembered the day Sienna had arrived at foster care. She was so soft, so cute that he had wanted to pinch her cheeks. The girl was lively, and she was especially close to him.

Kyrell was a loner. He knew that foster care wasn’t his home, and someday, he might either find his biological parents or an adoptive family. So, he didn’t dare get close to her. However, the young Sienna had followed him like a tail and had refused anyone else’s company. Why? He didn’t know.

Slowly, she had started to grow on him. Surprisingly, never once did he consider her his sister. Instead, he always thought of her as his friend.

But this small bond didn’t last for a long time. A few weeks after her arrival, the Lawrence family adopted her, and he was left alone again. And months later, he was adopted as well, and over time, the small girl became a distant memory.

However, it came gushing back when he discovered the truth two years ago. Since then, he kept tabs on her, slowly falling for her. By the time he realized what was happening, his feelings had grown deeper, and he was beyond redemption.

"Miss Lawrence." Kyrell poured a glass of water and held it before her, and Sienna took it with trembling hands.

The cold water calmed her agitated nerves to some extent, and she sighed softly. The truth was far from what she had expected.

Sienna knew Kyrell wasn’t lying. There wasn’t a need to. She could easily investigate the matter and find out the credibility behind his words. Moreover, she remembered her parents mentioning a boy in the foster care, wondering what happened to him after they adopted Sienna.

It was Kyrell they were talking about. He had entered her life long before she could even remember, even before her adoptive family did.

The truth was shocking. But as seconds ticked, Sienna came to terms with it, and slowly, the way she looked at Kyrell changed. Her gaze wasn’t suspicious anymore. Instead, she was filled with gratitude.

For her to have followed him willingly, he must have provided her with a strong sense of security. And for this reason alone, she was eternally grateful to him.

Letting out a long breath, she raised her head to meet Kyrell’s concerned gaze. "Thank you, Kyrell. Thank you so much."

Sienna was overwhelmed with emotions, and her eyes teared up until they turned red. But amidst them, there was also a strong sense of relief. She even smiled at him, a heartfelt smile filled with gratitude.

Kyrell wasn’t a fool to not understand why she was thanking him. Nodding at her lightly, he remained silent, giving her time to accept the truth thrown at her suddenly.

"Miss Lawrence, maybe I should leave and give you some space."

Sienna agreed with him. It was a lot for her to take all of a sudden. She needed some time to sort her thoughts.

"Good night, Miss Lawrence."

"Good night."

Xavier was waiting outside the study, wishing their misunderstanding would be resolved quickly. He was worried out of his mind and kept pacing, glancing at the closed door every few seconds.

When he saw Kyrell leave the study, he ran to him, his gaze hopeful and curious.

"Is everything alright between you two now?"

Kyrell shrugged lightly. He didn’t have an answer to his question.

"What..."

"I think we should sleep."

Kyrell patted his shoulder and walked away, leaving a confused Xavier to stare at his back.

What does his reaction mean? Were their misunderstandings resolved or not? Fuck! Does it kill you to give me a reply? How am I going to sleep well tonight?

That night, neither Sienna nor Kyrell slept well.

While Kyrell was worried about how different his dynamics with Sienna would be, Sienna, on the other hand, couldn’t forget how the man had gazed at her in the kitchen. His face kept popping into her mind every time she closed her eyes.

It was only in the wee hours of dawn that she managed to fall asleep.
