Chapter 57: Selfish woman

"You bitch! Do you know who my father is?!" The new lady screamed as Zara continued handling her. But Zara couldn’t care less if her father was a god, she was enjoying herself and showed no signs of stopping anytime soon.

"This is so fun. Thanks for coming my way," Zara said, gripping the woman’s hair even harder, drawing a sharp cry of pain that started to attract attention from outside.

"Mother! Father! Help me!!" The lady shrieked when she could no longer resist.

"Ahh! Mirabel!" Another lady, dressed far more casually than the one Zara was dealing with, appeared at the door and gasped, bringing her hands to her mouth in shock at the sight before her.

The new lady, now identified as Mirabel, spotted the lady by the door and pleaded, "Please, go get my father and mother!"

"Oh...kayyy!" The other lady replied shakily before running off to fulfill Mirabel’s request.

"You think your parents can save you, huh?" Zara yelled, eyes wild with fury. "Joke’s on you, I am ripping every strand of hair out of your head today!" She then struck Mirabel across the back, prompting a scream, as tears streamed freely down Mirabel’s face.

"Please, let me go! I didn’t mean to cause trouble. I was just angry you managed to seduce him into sleeping with you." Mirabel began to plead, realizing her strength was no match for Zara’s.

"Seduce huh?" Scoffing, Zara muttered.

Just then, Silas stepped out of the bathroom, a deep frown on his face. The noise had been loud enough to draw his attention, though he had initially assumed it was coming from the next room. But when he recognized Zara’s voice, he knew something was wrong, and the scene that greeted him only confirmed it.

"Zara!!" He shouted, making her flinch. She paused and slowly turned her head to meet his eyes.

He stormed toward her, and though her heart rate shot up, it wasn’t from desire, it was from pure frustration. Why was he already taking sides without hearing her out? And why her name? Why not shout at the brat who barged in and started this?

"What?!" She yelled back at him. When he reached them, he coldly ordered, "Let her go!" His glare was intense, one that would shake anyone else but it only lit Zara’s fire further. freewёbnoνel-com

"And if I don’t?" She snapped back, meeting his glare with one of her own, smirking as though she didn’t care if he burned her alive. To make things worse, she yanked Mirabel’s hair tighter, causing the latter to scream and cry out for him.

"Help me, Silas! I didn’t do anything. She just got angry because I came to your room and attacked me," Mirabel sobbed, lying through her teeth. But Zara wasn’t the least bit shocked, spoiled brats like her were nothing new. She has dealt with their kind before and was more than used to their antics.

"My daughter!!" An older woman suddenly cried from the doorway. She stormed into the room and shoved Zara hard, sending her crashing to the floor and twisting her arm in the process.

"Ah!" Zara cried out, though her pain wasn’t nearly as loud or dramatic as Mirabel’s. She raised her injured arm, inspecting it for signs of a fracture.

"Mother! What took you so long?!" Mirabel wailed as her mother wrapped her in a protective embrace, acting as though she had just been stabbed through the heart.

"I am so sorry, your father delayed me," Mirabel’s mother apologized breathlessly. Then she bellowed, "How dare you touch..." but froze the moment her eyes landed on Zara. Her words caught in her throat.

Her face went pale. Her breath hitched. And for a moment, she stood utterly still, staring at Zara with a stunned expression that made everyone else pause and look between them, sensing something wasn’t right.

With a slow, bitter laugh, Zara stood and dusted herself off, the rage still burning in her eyes. "You left my father... just to end up giving birth to a spoiled brat?" She said coldly. "I have to admit, you truly failed my expectations. I used to wonder what my stepsister would look like. Now I know... and she looks disappointing."

That had Silas narrowing his eyes, curiosity sparked.

"Mother... Do you know this prostitute?" Mirabel asked, glancing between Zara and her mother, confused and uneasy.

"Oh, she didn’t tell you about her first family?" Zara said, her voice laced with cruel amusement. "How tragic."

Swallowing hard, Mirabel’s mother turned to her daughter. "No... I don’t," she said quickly. "Let’s go. Forget all this. I will buy you whatever you want." She gripped Mirabel’s wrist, trying to lead her out of the room.

But Zara’s voice stopped her in her tracks. "Now you deny me? That’s rich, even for you. If you could abandon your own children for a man, why wouldn’t you pretend I don’t exist now?"

"Hey! Don’t you dare speak to my mother like that!" Mirabel shouted, stepping forward defensively.

Zara burst into laughter, loud, bitter, and cold. "Your mother is a whore. A cheat. A woman who walked away from her own children... for love." Her words were knives, flung without hesitation.

"You!!" Mirabel screamed, pointing at her, eyes blazing.

"No, Mirabel. Let me." Her mother gently pushed Mirabel behind her, shielding her.

"Yes. I cheated," she said slowly, her voice low but steady. "But I only did because I was forced into that marriage. You... and your siblings... were born because of a contract I made with your father’s family. I gave birth to you not out of love... but to escape. To buy this new life."

Zara smiled bitterly, the pain etched into her face. She had expected that. She had always known it. But hearing it aloud still cuts deep.

"That doesn’t change the truth," she replied, her voice flat and cold. "You were already sleeping with your current husband before you left my father. Don’t deny it."

"So what if I was?" The woman snapped, her calm crumbling. "Your father was a choice made for me. Why shouldn’t I pursue my own happiness?!"

"Happiness?" Zara’s voice cracked, a mix of fury and heartbreak surging through it. "Did you ever stop to think about us? If we were happy? You are a selfish, cruel, rotten woman who only ever cared about herself. And I promise you, one day, you will abandon this daughter, too, if someone else makes you feel more ’alive’!"

A heavy silence dropped over the room. No one moved. No one spoke. And then...

"Yes," Mirabel’s mother said, her voice deadly quiet. "I am selfish. And if I were faced with that choice again... I wouldn’t hesitate. I would leave you again."

The words shattered Zara. Her breath caught. Her chest ached as if something inside had collapsed.

Eyes wild with grief and rage, she began to take slow steps toward her mother. "I swear... I wish I could kill you right now. I wouldn’t even care if I had to rot in jail!"

But before she could reach them, Silas rushed forward and grabbed her, pulling her away before she could do anything reckless.

"No! Let me go! She doesn’t deserve to live!" Zara cried out, thrashing in his arms, the tears now falling freely. "She’s a monster! A cruel, heartless monster!"

Silas held her tighter, lifting her completely off the ground as he carried her away. Her sobs echoed down the hallway as he walked, not stopping until they were far from the chaos, far from the wound that had just been torn wide open.
