Abyss Sequence-Chapter 393 - 50: Speculations About Magic Power
Judging by the sequence of events depicted, Zhuang Xu’s act of severing the connection between Earth and the heavens seems to have occurred after Gonggong toppled the towering structure and after Nuwa repaired the Moon.
If hosting such a ritual could sever ties with the Abyss, why then did Gonggong need to topple that tower? Why did humans from various parts of the world need to return to their ancestral lands?
Yan Luo couldn’t fathom it, but he believed those experts should be able to figure it out.
The projected images might contain maddening information for others, so Yan Luo stepped out of his tent to, regrettably, inform the experts about it.
Upon hearing Yan Luo’s words, the experts expressed regret and disappointment.
No one expected that the information encrypted on this metal plate contained visions related to the Evil God.
Information converted into language inherently leads to data loss, and since Yan Luo was describing what he saw to them—the data had already been lost once when it entered Yan Luo’s mind, and now another fraction was lost when described by Yan Luo.
However, there was no alternative; without Yan Luo’s mediation, they might devolve into madness from viewing those images. For the sake of sanity, they had to rely on Yan Luo’s recounting.
To minimize information degradation, Yan Luo endeavored to describe things meticulously, which took him a full ten hours.
The experts listened for ten hours as well, filling their personal devices with copious notes.
Yan Luo remained full of spirit, only slightly parched, a need quenched by water, but the experts were fatigued and needed proper rest.
Thus, Yan Luo could only wait.
The next morning, as soon as the experts awoke, they began discussing the information Yan Luo had shared.
After some heated debate, the experts gradually reached some consensus.
For instance, they speculated that their ancestors perhaps severed ties with the Abyss explicitly to avoid contact with the Evil God.
Gonggong’s actions were part of this ’severing ties with the Abyss’ initiative.
Meanwhile, Zhuang Xu severing the connection with the heavens likely happened after Blue Star had distanced itself from the Abyss.
Yan Luo, silently listening on the side, raised a query: "Why do you believe the severance of the connection with the heavens occurred after Blue Star’s detachment from the Abyss?"
The experts exchanged a glance before one, with articulate speech, explained to Yan Luo, "Because we hold a hypothesis—the Abyss and Magic Power are not entirely interlinked!"
Yan Luo’s eyelids twitched, "What do you mean?"
The expert chuckled, continuing, "As the name suggests, the Abyss is just the Abyss, and Magic Power is merely Magic Power. The two, though related, do not imply that the Abyss brought forth Magic Power. Magic Power is something that may have always existed, yet humans failed to discover and harness it."
Yan Luo crossed his arms, refraining from immediate rebuttal, "Please, elaborate."
The expert stated, "The prevalent academic view still ties Magic Power to the Abyss, positing it was the Abyss that introduced Magic Power. The ancient Blue Star Civilization severed its link to the Abyss, causing a dwindling of Magic Power. But the archaeological community disagrees. During the peace era before the Lost Decade, archaeologists unearthed numerous dinosaur fossils. Despite little difference between the environmental conditions from when dinosaurs existed and now, why did dinosaurs evolve to such colossal sizes compared to elephants? Considering energy usage and biological circulation burdens, dinosaurs shouldn’t have developed such massive structures. Thus, we theorize Magic Power has always existed, and dinosaurs evolved organs that could respond to Magic Power.
"We validated this based on data from Alfheim you provided. The longevity of elves is due to Magic Power—something they’ve deduced through their own studies. Deprived of Magic Power, their lifespan drastically shortens, evident from their growth phases. Elven children grow at a rate similar to humans until their teens or twenties, when growth slows, and sheer aging kicks in, contradicting natural laws."
Sasa returned from Alfheim bringing extensive Elven knowledge now being studied in the academic community.
"The earliest records associating elves with the Secret Realm go back over nine thousand years, yet their racial records extend much further. Sasa also noted no record in their history of suddenly extended lifespans. We thus infer that elves evolved organs responsive to Magic Power during their evolution, while humanity did not, similar to how some animals can see colors that humans cannot. More colors exist in nature, invisible and unnamed to humans. Magic Power, particularly, is like ’additional colors’ in nature, perpetually present yet unreachable to us until the Abyss’s arrival alongside the birth of Saints."
Upon hearing this, Yan Luo fell into pensive contemplation.
If interpreted as such, it indeed carries some potential validity.
After pondering for a moment, Yan Luo asked, "Then why do you assert the severing with the heavens happened post the separation from the Abyss?"
"Still the Evil God!" another expert firmly stated, "If Magic Power has indeed always existed, severing ties with the Abyss could not have weakened the Magic Power environment. The severance of the celestial connection was not done to diminish Magic Power but rather as its side effect. It was more likely an action aimed at protecting Blue Star from the Evil God’s menace."
The ancient Blue Star Civilization had advanced enough to repair the Moon; perhaps only the Evil God could drive them to retreat.
Even the ’Abyss,’ in essence, is an Evil God!
"...These are merely conjectures," added Yan Luo.
Hearing this, all experts present laughed and agreed:
"Indeed, it is just a conjecture. To test it, we’ll apply to launch probe satellites to assess Magic Power environments above Earth’s atmosphere. The environment near the Celestial City proves insuffizient; we need to send satellites to the Moon, to Mars, to evaluate Magic Power there!"
"If our conjecture holds, the space beyond Earth should have higher Magic Power concentrations, incidentally allowing us to verify any correlations between Magic Power and gravity—is greater gravity accompanied by higher Magic Power density?"
"As the Magic Power concentration rises on Blue Star, it might be due to the celestial severance’s seal fracturing, explaining why little changed in Abyssal conditions for decades until recent multiple changes—external Magic Power environments could be the catalyst for Abyssal transformation conditions."
The experts’ comments seemed to deviate somewhat from earlier research conclusions.
For instance, during a Magic Surge, it was believed that slaying demons on Blue Star increased Magic Power concentration.
But on second thought, Blue Star is so immense, and the Magic Power constituting those slain demons would merely be a drop in a vast ocean.
Instead of the demons’ magic power boosting Blue Star’s Magic Power after their deaths, it’s more like their Magic Power corroded the celestial seal.
The seal of the celestial severance—if it exists—has been gradually worn down through years of human and Abyss struggles, now nearing actual peril.
Yan Luo left, returning to his tent to pack his belongings, preparing to depart from here.
The Mausoleum of Da Yu didn’t harbor any artifact of particularly remarkable effect, just this metal plate brimming with information. Even if taken by the Abyssal Believers, it wouldn’t matter.
Before leaving the camp, Yan Luo made sure to inform the leader about the maddening information contained within the metal plate, advising them not to meddle with it.
If they wished to uncover what the metal plate held, they could directly consult the archaeologists—he had recounted everything he remembered to them precisely.
In saying so, the message should also reach any Abyssal Believers in hiding within the camp.
Yan Luo hoped they wouldn’t lead themselves astray.
Requesting an aerospace plane for his return to Crimson No.2 would take time; Yan Luo wasn’t keen on waiting, so he traveled light, embarking on the journey back to Crimson No.2.
With his current stamina, the run back to Crimson No.2 was only a matter of one or two days, during which he could also hunt and relax.
Thus, Yan Luo set off.
