Chapter 201: Two different things

[Margaret’s POV]

"What do you mean? Are you saying I can’t contact Donald because of this candle?" I looked at Eric, perplexed, rapidly recalling the prior events in my mind.

"No, that’s not quite right. I should have been unable to mind-link with Donald because they had forced me to drink that black potion, this candle..." I carefully thought about it before answering, but the more I spoke, the more unsettling it all felt.

Seeing me pause, Eric put down the transparent bag in his hands and continued to explain seriously, "Miss Margaret, you’ve realized something’s off, haven’t you? In fact, I had already roughly uncovered the secrets behind it before."

"The black potion you mentioned does not block the connection between mates. I suspect it was used to affect the werewolves’ ability to shift. Didn’t you mention earlier that you couldn’t complete a shift? Actually, what truly blocked your mind-link with His Majesty is the enemy’s use of ’Mist’."

Listening to Eric’s analysis, I trembled slightly, overwhelmed by how sinister and cunning our enemies were, having planned everything before they kidnapped Elizabeth and me.

Donald immediately sensed my distress and tightly embraced me. I looked up at him, feeling astounded for the umpteenth time at how treacherous today had been.

Comforted by Donald’s gentle embrace, another doubt flashed through my mind, "So, do you normally use this ’Mist’ as well? Does it also have such a strong effect that it can completely sever the connection between mates who have Marked each other?"

I didn’t really understand these military matters; I was just purely curious about the miraculous effects of these drugs.

It was utterly baffling. I couldn’t imagine how many such ’unexpected’ incidents Donald had encountered in his various military operations. It was truly terrifying.

"Miss Margaret, you are very clever."

Hearing Eric’s compliment, I turned back, somewhat puzzled, not understanding why he suddenly praised me.

Eric first looked at me, then earnestly turned to Donald, and continued, "I was just about to report this matter to Your Majesty. The drug used by the enemy is not quite the same as the regular ’Mist’."

"Its effects are significantly stronger than the prohibited ’Mist’ available on the market. I believe it has been upgraded and modified. It is also what was actually used to block your mind-link with Miss Margaret. I will go back and verify this guess with Benjamin, who is much more skilled in this area than I am."

Upon hearing this, Donald simply nodded slightly, while I silently looked at Eric, overwhelmed by this flood of information.

I was shocked at the real existence of such substances, gaining a clearer logical analysis of the events when Elizabeth and I were kidnapped from the pack and later during our tough escape from the cabin.

So, what had blocked my mind-link with Donald both in the pack and the cabin were actually two different substances.

The modified ’Mist’ was used by the enemy during the urgent kidnapping at the pack, whereas after taking me and Elizabeth to the cabin, they switched to using a ’candle’ to achieve their goal.

Eric had roughly guessed this during our time at the cabin. I had to admit, he was really sharp in this area.

However, our enemies had even higher expertise in pharmacology, yet the most terrifying and dreadful aspect was their step-by-step, sinister, and ruthless strategies, having meticulously planned every action.

The rest of Eric’s analysis wasn’t far off from what I thought. I leaned tiredly into Donald’s embrace, who also held me tightly.

"Understood, you’ve done well, and Christian wasn’t wrong about you," Donald said appreciatively, noticing a hint of blush on Eric’s face, who looked at Donald with evident joy.

"How’s the situation on his end? Have you made contact with him?" Donald continued, clearly indicating that it wasn’t time to relax yet.

"Yes, Your Majesty. I’ve made contact with the captain. They’re doing relatively well there; despite the enemy being deceitful and brutally vicious, our Lycans are evidently braver. They couldn’t stand against us and have already retreated first. The captain has also ordered a chase, and they’re now on their way to join us," Eric reported respectfully.

As Eric was reporting, Anthony also walked back from a short distance away, with Elizabeth following him closely.

She seemed particularly reliant on Anthony today; I wasn’t sure if that was a good thing for her relationship with Armstrong.

I sighed softly to myself, watching her and Anthony slowly approach us.

After hearing all of Eric’s report, Donald almost imperceptibly sighed, seemingly somewhat relieved.

He patted Eric’s shoulder, signaling that he could go back to his duties.
