A Wrong Surrogate for the CEO-Chapter 88: Confused man
"What are you doing here, Mike?" Curtis asked curtly.
Lara sat down beside her husband, saying nothing.
They were both surprised to see him in their house, and even though Curtis’s expression was the perfect picture of calm, his guard was up.
If Mike said anything that he wasn’t supposed to say, Curtis was going to throw him out.
But the couple said nothing, and they waited for him to speak.
Mike ran a hand through his hair. He had no idea what he was doing, or why he had come all the way here.
All he knew was that he had stormed out of the house, desperate to get away from Tolu.
"Mike..." Lara called out to him again. She hated her ex husband for what he did, but seeing him in her house, looking as though he was at the verge of giving up on life, was a very disturbing sight.
"I am going to have you thrown out of this place if you don’t say anything," Curtis snapped when the silence continued to stretch.
Mike sighed and ran a hand through his hair again.
"I am losing my mind. That woman is driving me absolutely bonkers! I am so...what the hell? I don’t know what to do. I can’t sleep, I can’t breathe. I don’t... she is going to be the end of me. I have no idea what I did in my past life to deserve her being in my life, but if this was some sort of punishment for what I did to you, Lara, i need you to forgive me. Please. My life is on the line and I can’t...I just need you to tell me that you forgive me. Maybe the universe will hear your words and turn my life back around."
Both Lara and Curtis were surprised. Identical frowns were plastered on their faces, and they stared at Mike as though he was an alien who has suddenly sprouted multiple heads.
Of all the things they had expected him to say, what he said definitely wasn’t on the list.
Lara leaned forward, feeling a mixture of bemusement and confusion.
"What the hell are you talking about, Mike? This is all very confusing," she stated.
Curtis said nothing as they waited for him to answer the question, but the frown on his face didn’t waver.
Mike stood up and started to pace.
"I’m sorry. I know I should not have come here. I have no business butting into your life, especially after everything I had done to you. But I had no where else to go and nobody to talk to, and I am so sorry. But Tolu is driving me crazy. Did you know that she almost killed me two days ago? With a broken bottle! I can’t even... something is wrong with that woman. Totally, absolutely wrong. She needs to be in a psychiatric ward or something. I can’t deal with her and her bullshit anymore!"
Curtis and his wife exchanged glances. Mike looked horrible, and there was a part of Lara that wanted to feel pity for the guy.
But then she remembered everything he had done to her, and she pushed that pity away.
Mike deserved everything he was going to in his married life. He had, afterall, cheated on her with said woman.
So why was he complaining now that Karma was back for his cheating ass?
Curtis must have shared the same compliment before he cleared his throat and narrowed his eyes at Mike.
"Your private life is none of our business, Mike. I don’t give a shit what’s going on between you and your wife, but you have to leave. Now," he quipped.
Mike turned to face them, and the horror that was etched on his face was so visible. He looked like he was being tortured, and Curtis wondered what the hell was going on between him and Tolu.
"No, no. You don’t understand. I feel like I am her next victim. If I go back to that house, she is going to kill me. She already said something about poison, and I am sure she has weapons in that house. I am not safe, you hear me? My life is in danger. I don’t...all I asked for was a divorce," he groaned.
Lara perked up at his words, suddenly becoming more interested in him.
"You asked Tolu for a divorce?" she asked.
He nodded.
Lara leaned back on the couch, and there was a smile on her face. 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺
"Interesting. So you guys have finally hit that milestone. Cheers and celebrations for you," she taunted.
Mike was close to tears. When had his life turned this way?
How?
Where had everything gone wrong?
Here he was, standing before his happily married ex wife and ranting about his own failed marriage.
Mike shook his head and all his restless energy left him. He slumped back to sit on the couch facing them.
"You’re right. This is none of your business. I’m sorry for walking in here and just ranting. It’s not like I expected you to solve my problem for me or anything. I just...I know sorry doesn’t justify any of the horrible things that I did to you, Lara. But can you... forgive me, please?" he said quietly.
The tension that had been simmering in the room since he walked in intensified, and nobody spoke for a long while.
Mike’s heart thudded in his chest as he waited for her response.
Lara took a deep breath.
Mike wanted her forgiveness. He had ruined her life, made her homeless and destitute. He had almost made her womb useless too, and he had cheated on her with someone that used to be her best friend.
Did he really think that he deserved her pity? Her forgiveness?
"You should go, Mike," she said instead, and the dismissal was heavy in her voice.
Mike’s heart broke at her words. It was evident that she wasn’t going to forgive him.
He opened his mouth to speak again, but Curtis cut him off.
"Lazarus. Please see this man out of my house. And don’t you ever grant him entry, again," he ordered his bodyguard.
Mike stood up quietly. He did not resist, did not say anything.
He walked away defeated, his head bowed in shame.
Lara and Curtis watched him go. They did nothing, except to hold hands.
There was no peace for the wicked. Mike deserved everything he was going through.
