Chapter 32: An Arrangement

As Curtis sat down on the sofa, he had a poker face on, his mind ruminating on some thoughts. He saw his parents glanced at each other and his father coughed slightly, clearing his throat.

"I want you to know that we love you Curtis. Your mom and I have suffered silently when we saw you broken and in pain. And we decided that no matter what happens in this life, we’ll live to see you happy henceforth" Adrian Rodney began.

He paused and glanced at his wife. Lisa nodded in agreement with what her husband was saying. Which parents wouldn’t think like they’re doing, seeking only happiness for their son.

"Due to what has happened in the past, we understand what heart break has caused you emotionally and psychologically..." Adrian continued.

Curtis was not comfortable anymore. They should just go ahead with the discussion. He already knows his parents love him.

They don’t need to keep going merrily around as if they were trying to calm him down before telling him the reason for the meeting. He’s busy and besides Lara was waiting for him.

Truly in the sitting room, Lara glanced at her wristwatch. She wondered where Curtis went after dinner. She saw from her split vision that everyone already stood up.

She’s not welcome and she knows it. They didn’t utter it to her but their actions have spoken louder than their words would do.

"...We have decided that a suitable lady was befitting. We found that suitability with the Williams daughter. Her parents have given their consent and we only need you to accept it and we’ll fix the engagement date while you both would start dating.." Lisa explained.

Curtis glanced at his mother and then at his father. His father nodded and Curtis chuckled softly. He was quiet, they found him a bride, hmmm.

"It’s Amanda Williams. She’s been your sister’s friend for years. She’s a known girl and she’s from an influential family. She’s not a poor gold digger like that bitch that left you at the altar.

Her family name and reputation are important to her and she’s also an actress. Only women of such class and caliber are befitting of your status..." Lisa added.

Adrian and his wife exchanged glances and shrugged. That’s what they want to discuss with him. There’s nothing else and they hope he sees through their love for him.

Curtis stood up and said "I’ll be on my way dad. See you next time mom" he saw his mom’s expression twitched and her lips fluttered. She glanced at her husband and they locked eyes.

Before they could recover from the shock that Curtis’ attitude dazed them with, he was already at the door and bolting out.

"Stop right there, Curtis," Adrian Rodney ordered. Insolent. How can their son walk out on them after discussing something so important with him? How can he stand up without a word and declare that he was leaving, how?

"You have something else to talk about, dad?" Curtis demanded, his tone laced with annoyance. He is trying to hold back his tempers and not let it loose before his parents.

They saw him as an incapable man. They got Amanda Williams to the estate and invited him over. They want to get him to accept her as his wife.

"Yes, I have. As it is, I am the oldest member of this family. I can’t fold my arms and assume nothing is happening or turn a deaf ear to the need of a future heir.

You have refused to come out of your shell. You don’t want to get intimate with any woman and I cannot let you be. Out of a pure heart, your mom and I have done what we feel is best for you.

Your own part is to accept our kindness and accept our generosity. Amanda Williams will give this family its heir and things can go smoothly again,"Adrian explained hastily.

"But you saw me with a woman. I came in the company of a woman. I saw how you both treated her as if she was invisible. You even ignored her greetings and made her feel inferior.

I have chosen the woman I want. And unfortunately it’s not Amanda Williams. You can tell her to return to her parents home and await a future suitor..." Curtis scowled.

Why are his parents trying to make things complex for him? Can’t they see that he has a woman by his side? Isn’t Lara beautiful enough? What else do they want?

"There’s no way I am going to accept any woman besides Amanda Williams as your wife. You are acting delusional again and I won’t open my eyes and see you fall at the feet of gold diggers again" Lisa seethed.

How can he repeat the same mistake twice?

"Are you saying I can’t choose my woman myself? In this age and generation, arranging a bride for me? Who does that?

The one I chose, spent time with, slept and woke up with, still betrayed me. And now you think this woman that I know next to nothing about her besides her name will be loyal?

How can you even think like that? Please stop your arrangements at this point. Tell her to look elsewhere because I’ve been taken. Lara is my wife and that settles it" Curtis declared.

"Are you telling me, a man at my age and societal status to turn back on my words? I should go and tell her parents that my son refused to accept the arrangements?

It would suffice you that your father should lose face before family and friends simply because his son entangled himself with some classless woman?" Adrian bellowed.

What kind of son has he raised? They were all sad and broken when he learnt a bitter truth at the altar. They were near to him, never leaving him alone to drool on the betrayal.

They gave him a close marking to ensure his depression doesn’t drive him into committing suicide. And now, he wakes up one day and brings a woman to them.

"That is never going to happen, Curtis. If I remain your mother, you’ll marry Amanda Williams or sever ties with us" Lisa declared.
