Chapter 15: Met Kayla

"I’m sorry Dr JJ that I have to interrupt you while talking. But please if you invited me here to tell me that I was inseminated with Curtis Rodney’s sperm, I’m sorry but I have no interest in such topics.

I came to the hospital for an insemination, I paid my bills in full and I got what I wanted. Whatever happens after that, it doesn’t concern me at all.

I’m sorry if I sounded rude, but this child in my belly is mine exclusively. I don’t want to know anything else besides the fact that my baby is mine and mine alone" Lara declared and stood up, she was ready to leave.

"This isn’t your fault Lara. You paid in full. The services were rendered appropriately except that my assistant made a mistake in sample labelling. That singular mistake has just cost me my practicing license and would possibly send someone else to jail.

I thought you could help. But don’t worry about it. And I’m sorry if I bother you" Dr JJ apologised and wore a forced smile.

She knows how important this pregnancy meant to her. She’d always wanted it and now that she has it, such a mistake happened. Not to mention that she’s now divorced.

Dr JJ’S word kept lingering in Lara’s mind. The older lady’s words made it seem as if her future and career depends solely on her decision.

On her way home, Lara ran into her childhood friend Kayla Davis. That’s the last person she’d expected to see in Michigan at that time.

Though they’ve not been in close contact, she heard that she had settled in the UK and was deeply engrossed in romance with her boyfriend Joel Wood.

"Lara!!" Kayla exclaimed, alighting from her car and rushing over to hold Lara in a suffocating hug. Her lousy nature has not been tamed, despite many years having passed.

"Kayla Davis" Lara chimed with excitement. How on earth can she envisage it that she would be crossing paths with Kayla in their city.

"I’ve missed you girlfriend. I couldn’t reach you. I met Mike Blake and he said you’re both divorced and he couldn’t give any information of where I could find you..." Kayla tattered.

Lara gnashed her teeth in hatred. That bastard could conveniently tell Kayla that they were divorced but certainly he wouldn’t tell her that he’s an asshole who she caught cheating on their matrimonial bed with her supposed friend.

"Yeah.." Was all Lara could respond to. How she hates that bastard.

"I’m happy I’ve found you again. I don’t know how I’m going to go about getting a new acquaintance in Michigan knowing that you’re still in this city" Kayla stuttered.

"I’m glad we met again. I thought you’re now in the UK doing some good stuff to yourself girly" Lara stated, looking at Kayla all over. She’s indeed not doing bad with herself.

"It’s a long story, girly. But where are you heading, let’s catch some fun" Kayla asked, smiling broadly. She’d missed Lara so much. She’d deliberately stayed away from her when she married that ugly dude.

She doesn’t know why love can sometimes go blind. A beautiful woman like her ended up with that thing called Mike Blake and that wouldn’t have made her annoyed, since she was in love with him.

But refusing to get a job and remaining in the limelight just because her husband refuses her to work got her to stay away. Lara was a star back then during their university days. She has the best graduating grades and does excellently well academically and talent wise.

She let that brightness in her get dimmed because she got married to that undeserving man.

Gosh!

She tried to persuade her against doing what Mike said but soon realised that Lara was seeing her as an intruder and as someone who hadn’t really fallen in love.

Now, they’re divorced. She was excited and she was jumping for joy, in fact dancing in her heart when Mike casually told her that Lara Edmund is no longer his wife and he doesn’t know anything about her whereabouts.

"I’m actually heading home," Lara replied. Home indeed, she heard herself whispering to herself. She really called that place a home? But what else would she call it, that’s where she laid her head at night and stepped out in the morning.

"Fine. Hop in, let’s make up for lost time and years of being separated from each other" Kayla nudged, going past her to hold the door.

Lara smiled. Kayla would never change. She’s always like that. She’ll make a suggestion and wouldn’t want you to decide to accept it or not, then she starts making moves immediately. 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆𝙬𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝒎

She’s fun to be with. Such a classical lady.

She slid down into the copilot seat, and watched Kayla shut its door and walk over to take her place behind the steering. They soon set out. The excitement was all over Kayla. Meeting Lara was worth a fortune for her.

"I went to Granny’s house, I thought I would find you there. I discovered you don’t own that house anymore and granny is dead. God bless her soul..." Kayla explained, her hands, firmly on the steering wheel.

"Yeah, I lost that property to the mortgage. And grandma died around the same period. It’s been a hard time for me,Kayla. But I guess, I’m getting stronger by each passing day" Lara explained.

"I know what the feeling is like. An orphan, divorced, lost the only loved one you have left, then property gone also. It’s a terrible feeling Lara, and I know exactly what you’re going through" Kayla consoled.

She wished she’d met her during the period of mortgage seizing her property, she and Joel would have put heads together and helped her out.

Lara was such a sweet person back then. That’s why she kept getting annoyed when she hooked herself to that senseless dude. How on earth can someone be so ugly and also senseless?

That combination is the worst she’s ever seen.

"Thanks Kayla" Lara appreciated, her eyes welling up already for tears. But she’d promised herself that she’ll be strong henceforth for herself and her unborn baby.

Her hand subconsciously caressed her flat belly. Her baby is growing there. That’s the light that just brightened her dark tunnel of helplessness and despondency and yet, someone emerged from the blue and wants to claim ownership of it....

"Are you hearing me at all Lara?" Kayla asked, turning to glance at her briefly and concentrating on the steering wheel again. She saw that loneliness in her eyes. Despite being with her, she still felt lost in the middle of their conversation.

What has that asshole done to her? Has he ruined her happy spirit and left her in a delusional state? She silently gnashed her teeth. She wants to choke him.

"Sure..I..we are in the middle of a discussion" Lara stuttered. Did Kayla say something that she didn’t hear?

"What happened to you,Lara? I know one of the greatest mistakes you’ve ever made in this life was walking the aisle with that asshole surnamed Blake.

I’m sorry but I hate him. I tried to warn you,I tried to make you see reasons why you should be an independent woman, but you wouldn’t listen to me.

You let him toil with you. You gave yourself to him unreservedly and let him handle you like a puppy. And now, he’d got divorced with you and it seemed to me that you’re starting from scratch.

Why would you allow yourself to be treated like a piece of trash? That dude is so ugly and unpresentable and yet, he doesn’t love you half as much as you loved him. Why did you turn everyone else down and chose him?" Kayla cannot hide her irritation.

She’s never been a hypocrite. She says things exactly what she feels or thinks about it. She cannot suppress her urge to scold her friend for falling in love with that asshole.

"What happened to me was love," Lara blurted. That’s the plague that stucked on her. And it’s unfortunate that it plagued her heart and paralyses her sense of reasoning as well.

Kayla was dazed.

She glanced at her friend briefly and asked "What did you say happened to you again?"
