Chapter 101: I killed him

Lara and Kayla were beyond surprised to see Tolu.

They were horrified.

"What... what are you doing here?" Lara asked, and a silver of fear crept into her voice as she stared at the bloodstains on Tolu’s dress.

Kayla stood up and slightly moved to stand before Lara as if to shield her from Tolu.

"Why the hell do you look like that? Hell, why did they even let you walk in here looking like...that?" Kayla snapped, her eyes narrowing in suspicion.

Tolu said nothing. She ignored the questions, walked in and closed the door behind her.

Then she walked closer to the women, not caring that they had both gone pale and Lara was trembling slightly.

Tolu’s eyes were slightly wide, and she had a crazed expression on her face. Her fingers were dirty and stained as if she had dipped it in a pool of blood, and Lara felt her stomach swoop with horror as she took in Tolu’s general appearance.

Kayla inched closer to Lara and whispered.

"Dial the police. Now."

Lara’s hands fumbled as she grabbed her phone and did as Kayla said. She didn’t place the phone on her ear though.

She gently, inconspicuously placed it on the bedside table closer to where Tolu was standing.

If that woman had done something horrible, it was better if the police heard everything directly from the source.

Tolu stared at Kayla and Lara for a long moment, saying nothing. Neither Lara nor Kayla said anything too.

The three women stared at each other, and memories flashed between them all. They had all known each other for a long time. And now, as Tolu stood before them, Lara wondered what would have happened if Tolu had remained loyal to their friendship.

"What are you doing here, Tolu? Why are you covered in blood?" Lara asked as soon as she saw that the police had picked up the call.

Kayla said nothing, only moved closer until she was standing extremely closer to Lara.

Tolu looked between them, and a sad peal of laughter slipped past her lips.

"So she’s your new best friend, huh?" she rasped.

Kayla’s hand snaked across the bedsheets until she found Lara’s. The women held hands, a symbol of standing against the one who had betrayed them both.

Tolu let out another humourless laughter.

"Answer my question, Tolu. Whose blood is that?" Lara asked again, her heart hammering in her chest.

There was a possibility that was trying to weave itself into Lara’s bones, but she pushed it away, not wanting to believe it.

Tolu could not have done that, right?

Tolu cocked her head to the side and stared at Lara for a beat longer before she responded.

"Mike. The blood is not mine. It’s Mike’s," she deadpanned.

Lara’s heart leapt into her throat.

"What...what did you do to him?"

Lara’s heart was pounding like crazy against her chest, and she tried to calm down. Kayla was breathing hard too, and her hold on Lara’s hand became tighter.

Tolu smiled at the question, and there were flecks of blood on her teeth.

Lara shuddered at the sight.

"I killed him," Tolu announced.

Lara’s heart stopped beating in her chest. Literally.

Kayla’s jaw dropped open, and Lara’s eyes had never been that wide before.

A wave of surprise, disgust and fear slammed into Lara as those words settled around her.

She dared not look at her phone again, not wanting to draw attention to the fact that she hadn’t hung up on the police.

Her only hope was that the officer who picked up the call was already taking action.

Tolu went on.

"You know, I did everything for that man. I did EVERYTHING for him. He was the love of my life and I would have done anything, anything to keep him happy. I know I have a bad temper and I get mad easily, but I...I loved that man. So fucking much. When he decided that you were his enemy, I did not hesitate to turn my back on you. I chose him over everything. And I hated you because he hated you. I didn’t want you to be happy because he didn’t want you to be happy. Mike wanted you to be miserable, and I wanted you to be too."

She paused to breathe before she went on.

"But then, all of a sudden, he changed. He started to complain. He wanted me to leave you alone. He said you were married and out of our lives and that I should leave you alone. He said I was taking things too far. I could not believe my ears. What the hell was that supposed to mean? I did all of what I did for him. Hell, I offered to sleep with Curtis if it meant that you would lose the man, and Mike called me a slut for that. As if I wasn’t doing it for him."

Lara’s jaw almost touched the ground.

"You wanted to sleep with my husband?" she gaped.

Tolu sneered at her and went on.

"And then I went to jail. Your stupid husband sent me to jail. A whole me! I went to jail and lost my job. Imagine how devastated I was. I went back home, expecting Mike to comfort me. I mean, that was the least he could have done. I took all of those falls for him. But imagine what that bastard told me? He said he wanted a divorce."

Tolu laughed at this point, and Kayla shivered. There was something chilling, something terrible about the way the laughter sounded, and fear swirled around her and Lara, thick and almost visible.

"He wanted to divorce me! Me! I was supposed to be his soulmate, the love of his fucking life. But he wanted to let go of me. After everything we had gone through together. He wanted to leave. I told him he wasn’t allowed to, but he insisted. So I did what I had to do," she concluded.

Lara had gone entirely pale.

"So you killed him?"

Tolu shrugged.

"I had to. He was going to leave me," she said, so casually that Kayla shook her head at her.

"You’re a monster," Kayla whispered.

Tolu ignored her, cocked her head to the side again and held Lara’s gaze.

"I am here to finish the job. I mean, it would be hypocritical of me if I do not get rid of the one person who started all of these. And that is exactly what I am here to do."

Lara’s heart was like a drum in her chest. Her limbs had turned into lead, and she could not move.

"What...what are you talking about?" Lara’s voice came out as a whisper.

Tolu grinned, and the blood on the teeth gleamed as the light hit them.

"Don’t you get it? I came here to kill you, Lara."
